A wavelet transformation based optical processor for performing invariant pattern recognition is suggested. It contains a composite filter that consists of several wavelet daughter functions derived from the reference object. The intensity of the correlation peak is determined to be invariant to various deformations of the reference object. Computer simulations show explicitly the promising ability of the new technique.

Starting from the Starring and the GIMS networks a new Interconnection Multihop Network called EXSTAR is presented. It has potentialities, in terms of number of users, modularity and performance much higher than Starring, GIMS and other multihop structures. Moreover it still offers a notable simplicity in routing strategies, giving rise to routing processors including only few all-optical gates.

The medial axis analysis of an object can be used to effectively guide and optimize radiosurgery treatment planning. In this paper, a fast Euclidean medial axis transformation in three dimensions based on dynamic grassfire simulation and ridge extraction is presented. A ridge occurs when fire fronts collapse during grassfire propagation. Iso-contours (2D) or iso- surfaces (3D) can be obtained from dynamic grassfire transforms. They are locally smooth everywhere except at ridge locations. Ridges are detected by measuring local curvature at each point. This process is invariant under spatial translations and rotations. The algorithm yields the true Euclidean skeleton of the objects and is several orders of magnitude faster than other thinning methods. In radiosurgery treatment planning, optimal shots are only placed on the medial axis of the 3D target, which reduces optimization time and complexity. An example of a treatment planning process is presented and the relationship between skeleton disks and the dose distributions which they predict are discussed.

In a series of prior papers Kadar et al have designed, developed and experimentally evaluated a family of centralized detection algorithms for multi-frequency radars operating in various degrees of clutter. Previously, two centralized fusion algorithms, called non-coherent integration (NCI) and T-squared (TSQ), followed by adaptive constant false alarm (ACFAR) post-processing were evaluated. In this paper, an optimum adaptive CFAR version of the T- squared algorithm, called ATSQ, is developed. The performance of ATSQ is compared with the NCI and TSQ algorithms using measured data in clutter. The fusion performance comparisons are presented in terms of receiver operating characteristics (ROC). It is shown that the new ATSQ algorithm is robust to changes of the background clutter. Its ROC performance is near the optimum achievable, and is significantly better than either NCI or TSQ.

In laser welding, problems often arise from the accuracy required by the laser process, particularly where joints have narrow tolerance limits, e.g. with a fillet weld at an overlap joint. In a number of applications seam-tracking sensors can improve this situation. They are able to detect and follow the joint geometry autonomously. In addition to the tolerances, a varying gap between the parts to weld can cause welding flaws. To solve the problems caused by the height of the gap a functionality for adaptive welding can be integrated into the tracking sensor, rendering possible a determined influence on process parameters. Functional dependencies between the height of the gap and the welding parameters are presented in this paper. To further enhance the accuracy of path tracking the dynamic behavior of the system is investigated. With the integration of these dependencies into the tracking sensor, an algorithm for adaptive welding has been obtained, which takes another step towards the raise of profitability of laser installations by a simplified weld seam preparation and an enhanced stability of the welding process.

We introduce an adaptive mixing (AM) algorithm for estimating the relative ratios of chemicals in a mixture spectrum. This procedure is particularly well suited to mixtures with a large dynamic range of mixture weights. It has the advantage of being able to be used in conjunction with a band-pass (difference-of-Gaussian or DOG) filter, and a correction of baseline off-set and tilting of the spectrum [1]. Output of these filtering techniques is a cleaner signal retaining most of the relevant Raman spectral signature while minimizing artifacts due primarily to Rayleigh, dust, and atmospheric aerosols. We will describe the results of applying the algorithm to mixture spectra with both real and simulated additive noise.

In this paper, we developed statistical models to characterize the text line and text block structures on document images using the text word bounding boxes. We posed the extraction problem as finding the text lines and text blocks that maximize the Bayesian probability of the text lines and text blocks by observing the text word bounding boxes. We derived the so-called probabilistic linear displacement model (PLDM) to model the text line structures from text word bounding boxes. We also developed an augmented PLDM model to characterize the text block structures from text line bounding boxes. By systematically gathering statistics from a large population of document images, we are able to validate our models experimentally and determine the proper model parameters. We designed and implemented an iterative algorithm that utilized these probabilistic models to extract the text lines and text blocks. The quantitative performances of the algorithm in terms of the rates of miss, false, correct, splitting, merging and spurious detections of the text lines and text blocks were reported.

An effective two-dimensional polar format algorithm based on the Circular Sampling Theorem is implemented and tested. The algorithm interpolates samples from a polar to a rectangular raster for the purpose of focusing ISAR imagery. The imagery are generated from samples collected in the frequency space (f(x), f(y)) utilizing a uniform polar set of coordinates (r, phi). An example of an extended target is offered to show the versatility of the algorithm. In addition, a point target model is used to test its effectiveness. The distortion introduced by interpolation is calculated and compared to errors introduced by two standard interpolation techniques. Experimental data provided by the Pacific Missile Test Center was used to test the proposed algorithm.

A complex problem in computer vision systems is the incorrect description of objects due to dropouts along their contour. These dropouts can be caused by three factors: noise, or contrast problems; occluding shapes; perceived contour. A widely used shape representation technique is to represent the contour of an image as a sequence of parametric splines. In this paper we present one such technique, parametric spiral arcs, and argue that it displays properties desirable for vision systems and in particular, the spline-based contour representation aids contour completion. We present an algorithm which analyzes the dropout due to noise or occlusion and suggests likely connections, using information contained in the contour of a shape, and using perceptive properties of contour.
