A neural network structure that learns feature extraction and classification operations simultaneously is described. The feature extraction operations are represented using generalized image algebra operations. Learning rules are described. Usefulness of electron beam lithography is strongly related to the efficiency and quality of methods used for proximity correction. This paper addresses the above issue by proposing an extension to the new proximity correction program PROXECCO. The combination of a framing step with PROXECCO produces a pattern with a very high edge accuracy and still allows usage of the fast correction procedure. Making a frame with a higher dose imitates a fine resolution correction where the coarse part is disregarded. So after handling the high resolution effect by means of framing, an additional coarse correction is still needed. Higher doses have a higher contribution to the proximity effect. This additional proximity effect is taken into account with the help of the multi-dose input of PROXECCO. The dose of the frame is variable, depending on the deposited energy coming from backscattering of the proximity. Simulation proves the very high edge accuracy of the applied method.

A fusion algorithm is presented for a multisensor tracking system, in which the local trackers are N-scan data association filters. Previously, a fusion algorithm was given for the case where the local trackers are JPDA filters. Here, a fusion algorithm is presented for the more general case of local N-scan data association filters, of which the JPDA is a special case (N equals 0). The fusion equations consist of a simultaneous updating of the global hypothesis probabilities, and conditional global target state estimates. Two communication schemes between the local trackers and global processor are considered. A unidirectional communication scheme is examined in which the local trackers send the updated hypothesis probabilities and conditional target state estimates to the global processor; the local nodes then continue to track without knowledge of the global estimates. A bidirectional communication scheme is examined in which the local trackers send the updated hypothesis probabilities and conditional target state estimates to the global processor.

A framework of multiresolutional target tracking is established in this paper. The wavelet transform is employed in constructing multiresolutional data and model structures. Multiresolutional tracking is performed over the multiresolutional data and model structures in a top-down fashion. The main advantages of multiresolutional target tracking include: computational efficiency, performance robustness and algorithm flexibility.

The measurement that is `closest' to the predicted target measurement is known as the `nearest neighbor' measurement in target tracking. A common method currently in wide use for tracking in clutter is the so-called nearest neighbor filter, which uses only the nearest neighbor measurement as if it is the true one. This paper presents a technique for prediction without recourse to expensive Monte Carlo simulations of the performance of the nearest neighbor filter. This technique can quantify the dynamic process of tracking divergence as well as the steady state performance. The technique is based on a general approach to the performance prediction of algorithms with both continuous and discrete uncertainties developed recently by the authors.

Spatial phase-measurement interferometry techniques are affected by a number of sources of error. This paper focuses on the major limitations for phase calculations using standard N- point algorithms. These limitations are having the wrong carrier frequency, unequally spaced fringes, detector nonlinearities, and variations in the dc fringe intensity. Computer simulations reveal the character and magnitude of these errors.

Since the advent of target tracking systems employing a diverse mixture of sensors, there has been increasing recognition by air defense system planners and other military system analysts of the need to integrate these tracks so that a clear air picture can be obtained in a command center. A popular methodology to achieve this goal is to perform track-to-track fusion, which performs track-to-track association as well as kinematic state vector fusion. This paper seeks to answer analytically the extent of improvement achievable by means of kinetic state vector fusion when the tracks are obtained from dissimilar sensors (e.g., Radar/ESM/IRST/IFF). It is well known that evaluation of the performance of state vector fusion algorithms at steady state must take into account the effects of cross-correlation between eligible tracks introduced by the input noise which, unfortunately, is often neglected because of added computational complexity. In this paper, an expression for the steady-state cross-covariance matrix for a 2D state vector track-to-track fusion is obtained. This matrix is shown to be a function of the parameters of the Kalman filters associated with the candidate tracks being fused. Conditions for positive definiteness of the cross-covariance matrix have been derived and the effect of positive definiteness on performance of track-to-track fusion is also discussed.

The first and most important link of the crop shear optimization system, profile tracking and recognition (PTR) for hot bar ends, is introduced in this paper. Several features in system architecture are described. In the design of software, several ways are proposed to speed up the processing. A unique set of algorithms for real-time image data processing in C language and assembler language is used. Different thresholding strategy in different position are useful for the system to be used in a hostile environment and with scales on the bar. Experimental results show that the system has high reliability and good anti-interference performances.

The principal components of a collection of randomly sampled photos from a police mugshot album were extracted using a modification of the neural net described by Sanger. Principal component analysis provides a basis that `spans' the face space, from which each face in a population can be reconstructed simply by taking a proper linear combination of the basis components. The coefficients of this linear combination can serve as a measure of similarity between faces. In previous studies, the authors tried a mugshot album search strategy based on subjective similarity judgments. A network of global, subjective similarity judgments was established between each photo in a small data base (3000 photos). The witness chose the photos most similar to the target from the set displayed on the monitor. The computer used the similarity network to rerank the remaining photos in the album that had not yet been displayed, to select the next set of photos with the best fit for presentation. This process was continued until the target photo was located. In this study, we used the objective similarity measure based on principal component coefficients in place of the subjective judgments. Each image in the experimental database was automatically coded using the first 100 principal components. The same experimental procedure as used with the manually coded data base was conducted. The results are better than those achieved with the subjective method and encourage the use of this coding scheme on larger police albums (100,000 photos).

An adaptive image formation algorithm is proposed to exploit the aspect-angle dependence of man-made scatterers in foliage penetrating (FOPEN) synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Man-made scatterers often exhibit a strong dependence on the aspect angle between the orientation of the scatterer and the line of sight of the radar. More specifically, the return from a man-made target is greater when the target is oriented broadside with respect to the radar. Conventional SAR image formation processing assumes that backscatter is independent of the aspect angle; by relaxing this assumption, it is possible to reformulate the image formation process to improve the separability of man-made scatterers vs. natural clutter. We propose an image formation process that adapts the length and position of the aperture used during the cross-range compression stage. The algorithm identifies the locations that are likely to correspond to aspect- dependent scatterers. In the vicinity of such scatterers, the algorithm chooses the aperture to match the expected return from a man-made scatterer. Elsewhere, the algorithm uses the full aperture. The resulting imagery enhances man-made targets relative to the background clutter and facilitates improved detection performance.
