Automatic micropropagation is necessary to produce cost-effective high amounts of biomass. Juvenile plants are dissected in clean- room environment on particular points on the stem or the leaves. A vision-system detects possible cutting points and controls a specialized robot. This contribution is directed to the pattern- recognition algorithms to detect structural parts of the plant.

In a multi-target multi-measurement environment, knowledge of the measurement-to-track assignments is typically unavailable to the tracking algorithm. In this paper, a strictly probabilistic approach to the measurement-to-track assignment problem is taken. Measurements are not assigned to tracks as in traditional multi-hypothesis tracking (MHT) algorithms; instead, the probability that each measurement belongs to each track is estimated using a maximum likelihood algorithm derived by the method of Expectation-Maximization. These measurement-to-track probability estimates are intrinsic to the multi-target tracker called the probabilistic multi-hypothesis tracking (PMHT) algorithm. Unlike MHT algorithms, the PMHT algorithm does not maintain explicit hypothesis lists. The PMHT algorithm is computationally practical because it requires neither enumeration of measurement-to-track assignments nor pruning.

Recently, fuzzy c-Shells algorithms have been proposed for spherical boundary detections. Only a few applications of the Fuzzy c-Shells algorithm have been explored. This paper proposes a new algorithm utilizing the Fuzzy c-Shells approach for detection of the approximate location of the left ventricle. The proposed technique has been successfully applied to 25 2-D magnetic resonance cardiac images and has located the left ventricles.

This paper extends the maximum likelihood concept as applied to the adaptive detection of sub-pixel targets with unknown spectral signatures. The clutter is modeled stochastically with a spatial-spectral covariance matrix. The target model is primarily stochastic and partially deterministic. Within any given spectral band the spatial target signature is deterministic. For the sub-pixel target application, a system point spread function (PSF) is used. The PSF is allowed to vary spectrally, due to the dependency of a sensor's diffractive PSF on the spectral wavelength. The spectral target signature is completely stochastic and must be determined at each pixel using maximum likelihood estimation techniques. Based on these assumptions, an optimal maximum likelihood processor is derived. Encouraging performance results are presented from real IR data. detection probabilities are shown in many cases to improve significantly when compared to spatial-only detection processes.

This paper discusses the use of neural networks to locate regions of interest for fingerprint classification using feature-encoded fingerprint images. The target areas are those useful for the classification of fingerprints: whorls, loops, arches, and deltas. Our approach is to limit the amount of data which a classification algorithm must consider by determining with high accuracy those areas which are most likely to contain relevant features (effective for classification). Several feature sets were analyzed and successful preliminary results are summarized. Five feature sets were tested: (1) grayscale data, (2) binary ridges, (3) binary projection, and (4 & 5) 4- and 8-way directional convolutions. Four-way directional convolution produced accurate results with a minimal number of false alarms. All work was conducted using fingerprint data from NIST Special Database 4. The approach discussed here is also applicable to other general computer vision problems. In addition to fingerprint classification, an example of face recognition is also provided to illustrate the generality of the algorithmic approach.

We have applied a feed-forward neural network to the task of resolving closely-spaced objects (CSO). Traditional algorithmic methods are computationally expensive or numerically unstable, and techniques based on ad hoc rules are too subjective. Our approach relies on the principle that a sufficiently complex neural network can approximate an arbitrary function to an arbitrary degree of accuracy. We train a neural network to approximate the multi- dimensional function that maps from detector signal space to CSO parameter space, using an aggressive Hessian-based training algorithm and training set examples synthesized from the known inverse function. We find two important empirical results: we can simultaneously identify when the training set size is sufficient to adequately represent the mapping function, and when the network has achieved optimum generalization capability, for a given degree of network complexity. Thus we can predict the network and training set sizes necessary to achieve a given mission performance. Finally, we show how such a network can be used to provide sub-pixel resolution capabilities for missions observing both single objects and CSOs, as part of a real-time 2D sensor processor.

Terrain-discrimination is an important component of wide-area surveillance, with applications to battlefield terrain and agricultural terrain. Recently a statistical method was proposed by Mahalanobis and Singh to design spatial filters to recognize and discriminate between various textures. We apply this technique to texture discrimination in SAR images. It is demonstrated that the technique is a viable one and its robustness for terrain discrimination in SAR imagery is shown. Spatial correlation filters are used for texture distinction. The filters are implementable as optical (or digital) correlators for fast real-time texture recognition without segmentation. The filter coefficients are determined via eigenvector analysis. Examples for airborne SAR images are given to illustrate the proposed scheme for terrain discrimination.

This paper presents optical laboratory data on a number of new optical filter systems for: rank-order morphological filtering, morphological ternary phase amplitude filters, morphological hit-miss detection filters, Gabor detection filters and distortion-invariant detection filters. All filters and processing are performed on the same optical correlator architecture. This provides a general purpose multi-functional optical image processor for general scene analysis, capable of low-level vision, detection, and image enhancement operations.

This paper describes a general methodology for designing and testing a defect classification system for uniform web materials and a very difficult case study is used to illustrate the specific algorithms. We show that the proper selection of the sensing strategy can greatly simplify the inspection problem an increase the efficacy of the inspection system. This is shown by comparing performances of two configurations of the inspection system, one incorporating a smart sensor and the other a conventional sensor.

Recent work has proven the feasibility and utility of 2-Normal segmentation as an image analysis tool. This technique, and the algorithm on which it is based, have shown dramatic and promising results for a number of image processing problems, such as clutter suppression, texture segmentation, motion analysis and object tracking. These capacities will be useful for clutter suppression, target location and classification, platform motion compensation, target tracking, vehicle guidance, battlefield mapping and target damage assessment. These and all applications of 2-Normal segmentation could easily employ and integrate multi-sensor data and /or multi-scale image preprocessing for analysis in two dimensions, three dimensions, or time sequence.
