We proposed a neural network that can interpret multi-meaning Chinese words correctly by using context information. The self-organized network, designed for translating Chinese to English, builds a context according to key words of the processed text and utilizes it to interpret multi-meaning words correctly. The network is generated automatically basing on a Chinese-English dictionary and a knowledge-base of weights, and can adapt to the change of contexts. Simulation experiments have proved that the network worked as expected.

This paper presents an edge detection algorithm using Hopfield neural network. This algorithm brings up a new concept which is different from those conventional differentiation operators, such as Sobel and Laplacian. In this algorithm, an image is considered a dynamic system which is completely depicted by an energy function. In other words, an image is described by a set of interconnected neurons. Every pixel in the image is represented by a neuron which is connected to all other neurons but not to itself. The weight of connection between two neurons is described as being a function of contrast of gray-level values and the distance between pixels. The initial state of each neuron represents the normalized gray-level value of the corresponding pixel in the original image. As a result of Hopfield network analysis, output of neurons is modified until the convergence. Even though the outputs are analog, they are close to zero in all regions except edges where the corresponding neurons have near 1.0 output values. A robust threshold on the output level of the converged network can be easily set up at 0.5 level to extract edges. The experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness and capability of this algorithm.

Low bit rate image coding at 10 kbit/s and less is a difficult problem and does not appear possible with the current generation of block transform based methods. Current research efforts center around the use of transforms with less objectionable artifacts such as wavelets or model based methods. We examine a method that is transform based but captures specific features of the image to be represented. The transform uses principal component analysis to generate a basis set specific to the particular class of images to be coded. We present results from a transform designed for use in a `talking head' sequence. Significant improvement in reconstructed quality is shown when perceptual weighting is used in generating the basis set. The appendix includes details of computationally efficient methods for deriving the basis set as well as a description of the weighting method.

This paper introduces a unified approach to trajectory planning and tracking for an industrial mobile robot subject to non-holonomic constraints. We show (1) how a smooth trajectory is generated that takes into account the constraints from the dynamic environment and the robot kinematics; and (2) how a general predictive controller works to provide optimal tracking capability for nonlinear systems. The tracking performance of the proposed guidance system is analyzed by simulation.

The Pseudo 2D Hidden Markov Model (PHMM), which is an extension of the 1D HMM, has been shown to be an effective approach in recognition of highly degraded and connected text. In this paper, the PHMM is extended to directly recognize poorly-printed gray-level document images. The performance of the system is further enhanced by the N-best hypotheses search, coupled with duration constraint. Experimental results show that the new system has significantly improved the performance when compared to a similar system using threshold binary images as inputs. The recognition rate improves from 97.7% in binary system to 99.9% in gray-level with modified N-best search, over a testing set with similar blur and noise condition as the training set. For a much more degraded testing set, it improves from 89.59% to 98.51%. This also demonstrates the robustness of the proposed system.

Interpretation of gaps and touching characters continues to challenge current OCR designs. We approach this and other difficult problems in character recognition by deferring decisions to a stage where a character-specific knowledge base can be applied to the problem. We show how to extract and interpret saddle ridge features, at locations where there is either a narrow gap or a thin stroke. Since the color of the ideal image at these points cannot be locally deduced reliably from the features, special treatment is needed. Mathematically a saddle ridge is one where, roughly, there are strong eigenvalues of the Hessian of the gray scale surface that are of opposite sign. The recognition module is based on the matching of subgraphs homomorphic to previously defined prototypes. It generates candidate matchings of groups of input features with each part of the prototype. In this context, each saddle ridge is decided to be a piece of a stroke or a separation between strokes. The quality of each grouping is measured by the cost of transformations carrying the candidate features into the prototype.

Contrails are produced by airtraffic and thereby form an anthropogenic component of cloudiness. They typically appear in height levels between approximately 6km and 12km. Their temperature is typically between -40°C and -60°C. Due to these low temperatures their greenhouse effect is potentially high and the question arises to which extent they influence the climate (U. Schumann et a!., 1 994). A prerequisite for an estimation of this climatic influence is a knowledge of the cloud cover which is due to contrails. Our study presents two methods of determining contrail cloud cover using NOAA-AVHRR satellite data. The temperature difference image between channels 4 and 5 at 1 1 .tm and I 2tm enhances the appearence of high level thin clouds and is therefore used as a basis of the analysis. The first method is 'manually', the second by application of an automated detection. Both methods are applied on a scene over Central Europe and compared to each other. Chapter 2 describes the manual analysis and its results, chapter 3 the automated method and its limitations which exist up to now and chapter 4 shows the comparison of the two methods.

The development of an autonomous mobile robot is a central problem in artificial intelligence and robotics. A vision system can be used to recognize naturally occurring landmarks located in known positions. The problem considered here is that of finding the location and orientation of a mobile robot using a 3-D image taken by a CCD camera located on the robot. The naturally occurring landmarks that we use are the corners of the room extracted by an edge detection algorithm from a 2-D image of the indoor scene. Then, the location and orientation of the vehicle are calculated by perspective information of the landmarks in the scene of the room where the robot moves.

We have developed and field tested a real-time robust diagnostic system, which uses hierarchical, multiple-aspect models of plants. The models include the functional structure, timed failure propagation graphs, physical component structure, and component failure modes. The diagnostic reasoning applies structural and temporal constraints for the generation and validation of fault hypotheses using the `predictor-corrector' principle. The diagnosis is generated in real time, amid an evolving alarm scenario, and uses progressive deepening control strategy. The robust diagnostic system has been tested and demonstrated using ECLSS models obtained from the Boeing Company.
