Various approaches have been proposed over the years for using contextual and linguistic information to improve the recognition rates of existing OCR systems. However, there is an intermediate level of information that is currently underutilized for this task: confidence measures derived from the recognition system. This paper describes a high-performance recognition system that utilizes identification of field type coupled with field-level disambiguation and a spell-correction algorithm to significantly improve raw recognition outputs. This paper details the implementation of a high-accuracy machine-print character recognition system based on backpropagation neural networks. The system makes use of neural net confidences at every stage to make decisions and improve overall performance. It employs disambiguation rules and a robust spell-correction algorithm to enhance recognition. These processing techniques have led to substantial improvements of recognition rates in large scale tests on images of postal addresses.

Accurate identification of boundaries of the left ventricle lets the cardiologist determine important physiological parameters like the left-ventricular ejection fraction, volume of the left ventricle, and regional heart wall thickening; all of which aid in better diagnosis of heart diseases. We have developed a new semi-automated method to determine the left-ventricular boundaries from short-axis echocardiograms. Our method is based on the active contour models, also know as snakes, originally proposed by Kass et al. Our method was tested on images obtained from 18 patients; manual outlining was used as reference for comparison. Our results were also compared to Detmer et at., who used the same images to test their algorithm. The errors in detecting boundaries by using our algorithm were found to be within the reproducibilty of manual outlining. We also implemented a 3D extension of the active contour algorithm, where the third dimension is time, and are currently working on a clinical validation of this algorithm. The 3D algorithm partly alleviates the problems encountered in the 2D algorithm due to missing boundaries in echocardiograms.

This paper describes a method for off-line recognition of handprinted and cursive words. The module takes as input a binary word image and a lexicon of strings, and ranks the lexicon according to the likelihood of match to the given word image. To perform recognition, a set of character models is used. The models employ a graph representation. Each character model consists of a set of features in spatial relationship to one another. The character models are automatically built in a clustering process. Character merging is performed by finding the appropriate correspondences between pairs of character sample features. This is accomplished by finding a solution to the assignment problem, which is an O(n³) linear programming algorithm. The end result of the training process is a set of random graph character prototypes for each character class. Because it is not possible to clearly segment the word image into characters before recognition, segmentation and recognition are bound together in a dynamic programming process. Results are presented for a set of word images extracted from mailpieces in the live mailstream.

This paper describes the technologies and strategies underlying a state-of-the-art system for automatic handwritten address interpretation. The system is capable of interpreting both street addresses and post office box addresses. The input to the system is a grayscale image of a handwritten address and the goal is to determine the ZIP+4 code corresponding to the destination address on the mail piece. Processing is accomplished through an integrated series of steps involving preprocessing, numeral field recognition (ZIP codes, street numbers, post office box numbers), national postal database retrieval, word and phrase recognition, database record matching, and a decision strategy. In a formal test, this system encoded 38.7 percent of the mail pieces, with an encode error rate of 8.4 percent. Adjusting system parameters designed to tradeoff encode rate for error rate produces an encode rate of 33.8 percent with a 3.9 percent encode error rate.

We implement the continuous phase-only synthetic discriminant function using the commercial liquid crystal television. The filter is a nonlinear combination of the component phase-only filters of the training images and is generated with the iterative method. It produces narrow correlation peaks at the origin without sidelobe problem. Experimental results are shown.

Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to study photon migration in biological tissues. On a 36 mm diameter cylinder, temporal point spread function is simulated for each of the seven detectors around the model. Information such as mean-time-of-flight, differential pathlength factor, and detected photon number are recorded. Two back-projection algorithms have been proposed to reconstruct tomographic images of phantom.

This paper considers target detection with SAR and coherent subtraction. We shall show with experimental data that the coherent subtraction technique may be used to suppress outliers and obtain approximate Gaussian distributions for clutter and noise. We shall also derive generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) detection algorithms that may be used with SAR images that are obtained with coherent subtraction. We shall analytically compare the performance of (a) a single pixel detector, (b) a detector using complete knowledge of the target signature information and known orientation information, (c) a detector using incomplete knowledge of the target signature information and known orientation information, (d) a detector using unknown target signature information and known orientation information, and (e) a detector using unknown target signature information and unknown orientation information.

Several important advances have been recently made in the design of correlation filters. Among these, the minimum average correlation energy (MACE) filter is designed to yield sharp easily distinguished correlation peaks. To achieve this, the MACE filter minimizes the energy of the correlator output. We now introduce a windowing technique to control the distribution of the energy to further improve the correlation plane structure. The windows can be used to enhance the quality of the peak and reduce sidelobes by mobilizing the energy to unimportant regions of the correlation functions. This technique is particularly well suited for 1D signal processors such as acousto-optical correlators.

Image sequence recognition is an interesting problem involved in various situations of the Computer Vision field and in particular in mobile robot vision. Typical for this purpose is the motion estimation from a series of frames. Many techniques of motion estimation are described in literature 10, 13, 22 The approaches are normally divided in two categories: pixel based methods and feature based methods. In both the motion is estimated in two steps: 1) 2D motion analysis (feature based) or estimation (pixel based), 2) 3D motion estimation. The pixel based, or flow based, method uses local changes in light intensity to compute optical flow at each image point and then derives 3D motion parameters . The feature based method, on which it falls our choice, firstly extracts the features (as corners, point of curvature, lines, etc.). They are used as features: sharp changes in curvature 15, global properties of moving objects 18, lines and curves 16, centroids 6 Secondly it establishes the correspondences of these features between two successive frames (correspondence problem), and finally it computes motion parameters and object structure from correspondences (structure from motion problem). The motion correspondence is the most difficult problem. Occlusion masks the features and noise creates difficulties. Given n frames taken at different time instants and m points in each frame, the motion correspondence maps a point in one frame to another point in the next frame such that no two points map on the same point. The combinatorial explosiveness of the problem has to be constrained; in Rangarajan and Sah 19 it is proposed the proximal uniformity constraint: given a location of a point in a frame, its location in the next frame lies in the proximity of its previous location. Advanced version of MINACE (minimum noise and correlation plane energy) filters are applied to detection. detection involves locating all objects in multiple classes in an image independent of the object class, distortions and contrast differences, i.e. we do not attempt to recognize the object class. This is the first step in scene analysis. A number of false alarms are expected per scene and will be reduced in subsequent levels of the full processor. The advanced MINACE filter concepts we use involve: including a constant background in the training images, training on intermediate contrast ratio objects, use of a new background clutter model and use of orthogonal filter sets.
