We present a new method for solving the problem of motion segmentation, identifying the objects within an image moving independently of the background. We utilize the fact that two views of a static 3D point set are linked by a 3 X 3 Fundamental Matrix (F). The Fundamental Matrix contains all the information on structure and motion from a given set of point correspondences and is derived by a least squares method under the assumption that the majority of the image is undergoing a rigid motion. Least squares is the most commonly used method of parameter estimation in computer vision algorithms. However the estimated parameters from a least squares fit can be corrupted beyond recognition in the presence of gross errors or outliers which plague any data from real imagery. Features with a motion independent of the background are those statistically inconsistent from the calculated value of (F). Well founded methods for detecting these outlying points are described.

We consider the detection of candidate objects (regions of interest) in a scene containing high clutter, multiple objects in different classes, independent of aspect view, with hot/cold/bimodal/partial object variations, and with low contrast targets. We use three different filters with each designed to produce high probability of detection (P_D). We fuse the results from different outputs to reduce false alarms (P_FA). All filters are realizable on a correlator.

In this paper we present a novel technique to dynamically adapt motion interpolation structures by temporal segmentation. The interval between two reference frames is adjusted according to the temporal variation of the input video. The difficulty of bit rate control for this dynamic group of pictures (GOP) structure is resolved by taking advantage of temporal masking in human vision. Six different frame types are used for efficient bit rate control, and telescopic search is used for fast motion estimation because frame distances between reference frames are dynamically varying. Constant picture quality can be obtained by variable bit rate coding using this approach and the statistical bit rate behavior of the coder is discussed. Advantages for low bit rate coding and storage media applications and implications for HDTV coding are discussed. Simulations on test video including HDTV sequences are presented for various GOP structures and different bit rates, and the results compare favorably with those for conventional fixed GOP structures.

An effective target tracking system must have the ability to grab and identify various targets automatically. This paper presents a novel algorithm to detect moving targets independent of target's position and shape from image sequence consisted of complex natural scene, and discusses some constraints for removing noises and identifying varied moving targets. For image sequences consisted of tanks moved in an open country, several experimental results (photographs) are given out to show the effectiveness of this algorithm.

This paper describes the implementation of an optical flow range-estimation algorithm, intended to support autonomous helicopter navigation, on the iWarp distributed-memory multicomputer. The implementation exploits numerous features of the iWarp communications and computation architecture to maximize performance and efficiency. The range-estimation algorithm has been previously implemented on both distributed and shared-memory workstations. Experiences and performance figures from the initial iWarp implementation are discussed along with plans for future refinements.

An algorithm is presented to relatively align a 3D sensor and a 2D sensor measuring range and azimuth. The alignment is done using common targets that are tracked by both sensors. The algorithm estimates and removes sensor biases and sensor frame orientation errors. For illustrative purposes, the alignment algorithm is applies to simulated track data.

This paper will present a new algorithm for determining the presence or absence of a weak signal in non-Gaussian noise. A weak signal is one that is vanishingly small compared to the noise disturbance. There are several applications in which detecting a weak signal is important. If the weak signal is the result of the reflection of a small target then accurate detection can indicate target presence. If the target is maneuvering and measurements can only be made at widely separated fixed intervals, then after target detection an estimate of target velocity can be made. The algorithm presented in this paper is no more structurally complex than the LOD, yet possesses several important advantages over the LOD. The fundamental advantage is the fact that the underlying noise statistics do not have to be known a prior. In addition, whereas the LOD may require a rather complex nonlinearity to preprocess the data, the algorithm presented here does not. This paper will develop the algorithm, and then report on simulation testing that was performed to ascertain its performance. It will be shown that the proposed algorithm performs significantly better (that is, is able to detect the presence of weak targets) than more conventional linear detection methods (Wiener filtering).

User recognition is examined using neural and conventional techniques for processing speech and face images. This article for the first time attempts to overcome this significant problem of distortions inherently captured over multiple sessions (days). Speaker recognition uses both Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) cepstral and auditory neural model representations with speaker dependent codebook designs. For facial imagery, recognition is developed on a neural network that consists of a single hidden layer multilayer perceptron backpropagation network using either the raw data as inputs or principal components of the raw data computed using the Karhunen-Loeve Transform as inputs. The data consists of 10 subjects; each subject recorded utterances and had images collected for 10 days. The utterances collected were 400 rich phonetic sentences (4 sec), 200 subject name recordings (3 sec), and 100 imposter name recordings (3 sec). Face data consists of over 2000, 32 X 32 pixel, 8 bit gray scale images of the 10 subjects. Each subsystem attains over 90% verification accuracy individually using test data gathered on days following the training data.

This paper discusses an approach for applying IR target modeling to aid model-based automatic target recognition (ATR) algorithms. The paper also presents results based on experiments with real long-wavelength IR data. The algorithm uses an IR thermal prediction model to approximate the (long-wave IR) expected target signature. The algorithm then uses the predicted signature or some features based on it to locate or classify the target within the image.

In this paper, we investigate the use of linear filtering techniques in the exploitation of hyperspectral imagery. In particular, we focus on applications of the simultaneous diagonalization (SD) filter to hyperspectral image analysis. The SD filter can be designed to enhance a particular feature with a known spectral response pattern and suppress undesired features. The filter is used to enhance surface features in two AVIRIS scenes acquired from the Forest Ecosystem Dynamics (FED) flightline on September 8, 1990. A spectral distance algorithm is also applied to this hyperspectral data to enhance surface targets with similar spectral response patterns. Although no detailed ground information was utilized, targets were selected by image interpretation methods and included an urban/disturbed site, and a wetland bog area, and a northern vegetation type (mixed hardwood). Both the SD filter and the spectral distance algorithm are able to effectively separate these classes of ground features from others.
