This report deals with issues and concerns regarding target prioritization given a multi-target environment and a certain amount of information from a sensor suite. In the Hunter-Killer mode the commander is required to perform the critical task of determining the rank or priority of targets in a multi-target environment for handover to the gunner for negation. In the past prioritization was simply based on one criterion, namely the target class (i.e., tank, truck, jeep, etc.), where the tank would be designated as the highest priority. However, we believe that present and future battlefields will require higher order ranking schemes and criteria for ranking of the targets in a multi-target scenario. This report describes two concepts that can be utilized as a framework to perform ranking of targets. Both concepts were implemented and the performance of each with respect to a limited training set was evaluated. Initial performance results obtained with a multi-ordered mapping technique were adequate to warrant a more extensive study. The data to perform target proritization was considered to be available from a potential on-board sensor suite.

We have developed an algorithm to detect the presence of narrowband signals and track the time evolution of their center frequencies. This algorithm has 35 parameters whose optimal values depend on (among other things): (1) the expected dynamics of the signals, (2) the background statistics, and (3) the clutter (i.e., the number of simultaneous signals). Manually optimizing these parameters is a difficult task not only because of the large number of parameters but also because of the interdependence of their effects on performance. We have therefore devised an automated method for optimizing the parameters. It has three basic components: (1) a 'truth' database with a graphical interface for easy manual entry of 'truth', (2) a scoring function which is a linear combination of six subscores (three evaluating detection performance and three evaluating tracking performance), and (3) a distributed genetic algorithm which optimizes the parameter values for a particular truth database. We have used this procedure to optimize the parameter values to a variety of signal types and environmental conditions. The results have been improved performance as well as the ability to make the algorithm adaptive: as the system detects changes in the environmental conditions, it can switch to a different set of parameters.

This paper compares the performance of an artificial neural network technique to that of two conventional techniques in fusing (classifying) multispectral imagery. The true classification error rate is estimated by use of the k-fold cross-validation technique for a Bayesian classifier, a binary tree classifier, and a backpropagation neural network. The cascade correlation neural network is also described and its theory of operation is compared to that of the backpropagation neural network.

Collision avoidance involves the detection of impending collisions of an aircraft with either another aircraft or the ground from radar data and the timely alert of the danger to the pilot or air-traffic controller. The challenge is to provide sufficient warning (timely detections) with minimal false alarms. Radar measurement uncertainties degrade collision detection performance and must be accounted for in the algorithm design. This paper describes a method which uses statistical decision theory to control both missed or late detections and false alarms. The key to the technique is the mathematical description of the aircraft corridor uncertainty region. The corridor uncertainty region is derived from the position and velocity confidence ellipsoid associated with the aircraft radar track via a mapping from six dimensional space to three. By careful choice of the mapping, the minimum volume corridor uncertainty region is derived. This allows for the definition of the optimal collision avoidance decision rule. Since the method is based solely on the statistical properties of an aircraft's position and velocity track, it may be adapted to a variety of collision avoidance or guidance problems involving a radar or beacon-type sensors such as Mode C or Mode S.

This paper presents an overview of new classes of algorithms for the algorithm concepts for the solution of combinatorial optimization problems arising in data association. These algorithms are based on extensions of Bertsekas' auction algorithm. The paper includes experimental results using these algorithms and a modification of the algorithm of Jonker and Volgenant on 2-dimensional measurement-track data association problems in the presence of false alarms, missed detections, sensor bias noise, and sensor measurement noise. The results indicate that some of the new algorithms are very efficient for the solution of these data association problems.

The probability of correct object recognition is calculated assuming a maximum-likelihood algorithm, accounting for the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the atmosphere-imaging- system combination, and for the presence of clutter. The MTF is determined by the spatial bandwidth of the adaptive distortion-compensation filter. The algorithm recognizes an object based on minimum distance in feature space. Each feature has a corresponding scale size, with a corresponding blur from the MTF. It is demonstrated that the Vander Lugt filter is a maximum-likelihood estimator for a broad range of clutter and distortion statistics. Specific probability distributions are assumed for the compensated distortions (log normal), and the clutter strength (beta and Gaussian). The results presented assume an informationless distribution of targets in feature space, and show the variation of performance with the number of features, the quality of the compensation filter, and the strength of clutter.

We present a new approach to the problem of matching 3-D curves. The approach has an algorithmic complexity sublinear with the number of models, and can operate in the presence of noise and partial occlusions. We make use of non-uniform B-spline approximations, which permits us to better retain information at high curvature locations. The spline approximations are controlled (i.e., regularized) by making use of normal vectors to the surface in 3-D on which the curves lie, and by an explicit minimization of a bending energy. These measures allow a more accurate estimation of position, curvature, torsion, and Frenet frames along the curve. The computational complexity of the recognition process is considerably decreased with explicit use of the Frenet frame for hypotheses generation. As opposed to previous approaches, the method better copes with partial occlusion. Moreover, following a statistical study of the curvature and torsion covariances, we optimize the hash table discretization and discover improved invariants for recognition, different than the torsion measure. Finally, knowledge of invariant uncertainties is used to compute an optimal global transformation using an extended Kalman filter. We present experimental results using synthetic data and also using characteristic curves extracted from 3-D medical images. An earlier version of this paper was presented at ECCV'92.

In this paper, a neural network approach for the recognition of printed Chinese characters is developed. A multi-layer perceptron is trained as the classifier by using the back-propagation algorithm, and the Walsh functions are employed for feature extraction. Thirty similar Chinese characters (classes) are designed in the experimental domain. The network is initially trained with noisefree training samples, and is retrained gradually with misclassified noisy testing patterns to improve the robustness of the classifier. Through classifying a large set of 9000 unknown testing patterns of various noise degrees, a great augmentation in system robustness and an encouraging recognition performance are presented.

Texture is generally recognized as being fundamental to perception. A taxonomy of problems encountered within the context of texture analysis could be that of classification/discrimination, description, and segmentation. In this paper we suggest a novel artificial neural network (ANN) architecture for features extraction and texture recognition. There is evidence which suggests that the analysis of stimulus by visual system might involve a set of quasi-independent mechanisms called channels which could be conveniently characterized in the spatial frequency domain. In our model we use an FT feature space with angular and radial bins that characterize spatial domain filters to extract features. The extracted features are then used as input for the recognition stage. In order to evaluate the 2-D FT coefficients we use the Radon transform. The usage of the Radon transform simplifies the ANN model significantly. We suggest an electronic implementation of the ANN model for feature extraction, using a Connected Network Adaptive ProcessorS (CNAPS) chip designed by Adaptive Solutions Inc. We also develop software to simulate the ANN model with the Radon transform. We use a three stage back-propagation network as a classifier. We have used ten different texture patterns to test our ANN model.

The operaUon of machines and plants often leads to a strong loading of near-surface regions. Consequently, the non-destructive testing (NDT) of these regions during production as well as inspection is of high interest. Besides flaw detection the used test method should allow an exact flaw description. Furthermore contactiess techniques and the possibility of automation are points of interest. One technique which fulfils most of these requirements is the holographic soundfield visualization /1/. This technique allows large area detection of ultrasound (US) surface waves by means of opto-holographic methods. The test result is given by an image of the object surface covered with interference fringes representing the soundwave fronts. Until now only visual evaluation of the recorded soundfield images is performed. Because of the superposition of flaw pattern with the pattern of the insonicated soundwave, an exact flaw analysis appears difficult. with respect to precise as well as automatic testing digital image processing can be applied. The main task of image processing of soundfield images should be the isolation of flaw information from the background which is given by the insonicated wave and the image of the object surface.
