Some recent results in the theory of adaptive array detection are presented. detection curves are given for various detection algorithms. These detection algorithms are suitable for nulling out noise or interference sources in which the noise statistics are to be estimated from target- free data. They share the constant false alarm rate property, so that their false alarm rate can be set without knowledge of the noise covariance matrix. Also considered is a detection algorithm employing diagonal loading.

In this paper we focus on some features frequently employed in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) especially in algorithms based on contour analysis. These features are of a topological and/or geometric kind somehow describing the characters. A knowledge-based system is presented that has been designed to overcome the difficulties generally encountered in the extraction of structures from biomedical images. Different segmentation methods are opportunistically applied and parameter values are automatically controlled through the use of models, data, and progressive results. Detected structures are assigned fuzzy membership values related to the reliability of recognition results. The application of the system to microscopic images is described. Peculiar features of the system include a high degree of tolerance to parameter variations high flexibility and a reduced processing time.

This paper deals with the theory of centroid tracking of range-Doppler images created with a heterodyne-detection laser radar. A brief description of the system model is presented and the noise statistics of the image pixels are characterized. A center-of-mass centroid algorithm is used to determine the object's image location within the range-Doppler window. The effects of thresholding and frame averaging upon the performance of the centroid estimator are investigated. An analytical approach for setting the threshold is developed which is based on the criterion of making the estimator unbiased. A constant probability of detection algorithm in conjunction with an acceptable bias condition is described. Performance curves and simulation results are presented which support the theory. Center-of-mass centroid tracking performance, using simulated image data and data collected at the Firepond site in Westford, MA, is shown to be in agreement with the theoretical performance.

The mathematics of shape has a long history in the fields of differential geometry and topology. But does this theory of shape address the central problem of vision: finding the best data structure plus algorithm for storing a shape and later recognizing the same and similar shapes. Several criteria may be used to evaluate this: does the data structure capture our intuitive idea of 'similarity'? does it allow reconstruction of typical shapes to compare with new input? One direction in which mathematics and vision have converged is toward multiscale analyses of visual signals and shapes. In other respects, however, the recognition process in animals shows features that still defy mathematical modeling.

Most robotic grasping tasks assume a stationary or fixed object. In this paper, we explore the requirements for grasping a moving object. This task requires proper coordination between at least 3 separate subsystems: dynamic vision sensing, real-time arm control, and grasp control. As with humans, our system first visually tracks the object’s 3-D position. Because the object is in motion, this must be done in a dynamic manner to coordinate the motion of the robotic arm as it tracks the object. The dynamic vision system is used to feed a real-time arm control algorithm that plans a trajectory. The arm control algorithm is implemented in two steps: 1) filtering and prediction, and 2) kinematic transformation computation. Once the trajectory of the object is tracked, the hand must intercept the object to actually grasp it. We present 3 different strategies for intercepting the object and results from the tracking algorithm.

After the stage of pointlike target tracking, the tracker comes to the stage of area target tracking. This paper considers the situation in which the FLIR image contains a number of targets. The targets are compact. The image segmentation is achieved by considering not only the global gray-level distribution but also the spatial distribution of target pixels. After the global gray-level statistics in the whole image, a recursive merging algorithm, a hierarchical clustering on the gray level and spatial position, is applied to segment the image into a multiple gray-level image. To make full use of the whole scene scan, a four direction code method is used to depict the edges of target regions. And to save more execution time, the useful features, including structure feature and geometry feature, are calculated by the four direction code expression at the same time. Thus the target edge description and the useful features calculation are finished in the same whole scene scan of the segmented image. A changing index table which describes targets and their features within the segmented image is set up. The index table is updated at each scene to depict the changing content of the image. During the time in which the image gets into a comparable stable state, a target recognition procedure may be applied to find the interested target, and the threatening value of each target is considered. An adaptive gate is assigned to each interested target.

An approach of syntactic recognition (SR) using sampled boundary distances (SBD) is studied. The SBD is an ordered collection of samples of distance defined from a major axis to points located on the boundary of the object image. With the SRSBD approach the object undergoes many affine and non-affine transformations can be recognized. The affine transformations include translation rotation scaling and stretching (along and/or perpendicular to the major axis). The non-affine transformations include i) additive transformation applied to the distance of all the boundary points (perpendicularly) from the major axis ii) additive transformation applied to the SBD only and iii) random transformation of all the boundary points except the points used to measure the sampled boundary distances provided that the major axis is unchanged. Therefore the SRSBD can be used to recognize an object at various locations orientations and distances from the camera and various objects of the same family. The conversion of the SBD into an invariant string representation is developed. The use of this Earley''s parsing algorithm for recognition of the string representation of SBD is presented. The use of SRSBD to recognize partially obscured object or object family and to detect circularity of a partially obscured circle is presented. The experimental results are presented. With the SRSBD the following problems can be avoided the primitive selection problem the starting point selection problem and the problem of the noise-sensitive

Noisy objects, partially occluded objects, and objects in random positions and orientations cause significant problems for current robotic vision systems. In the past, an association graph has formed the basis for many model based matching methods. However, the association graph has many false nodes due to local and noisy features. Objects having similar local structures create many false arcs in the association graph. The maximal clique recursive and tree search procedures for finding sets of structurally compatible matches have exponential time complexity, due to these false arcs and nodes. This represents a real problem as the number of objects appearing in the scene and the model set size increase. Our approach is similar to randomized string matching algorithms. Points on edges represent the model features. A fingerprint defines a subset of model features that uniquely identify the model. These fingerprints remove the ambiguities and inconsistencies present in the association graph and eliminate the problems of Turney's connected salient features. The vision system chooses the fingerprints at random, preventing a knowledgeable adversary from constructing examples that destroy the advantages of fingerprinting. Fingerprints consist of local model features called point vectors. We have developed a heuristic approach for extracting fingerprints from a set of model objects. A list of connected and unconnected scene edges represent the scene. A Hough transform type approach matches model fingerprints to scene features. Results are given for scenes containing varying amounts of occlusion.

This paper presents a new fuzzy validity function which is mathematically justified via its relationship to the separation index a well defmed hard clustering validity function. The condition for existence of a unique globally optimal fuzzy c-partition has been found. The performance of this function compares well with other validity measures.
