A framework of multiresolutional target tracking is established in this paper. The wavelet transform is employed in constructing multiresolutional data and model structures. Multiresolutional tracking is performed over the multiresolutional data and model structures in a top-down fashion. The main advantages of multiresolutional target tracking include: computational efficiency, performance robustness and algorithm flexibility.

This paper discusses the problem of tracking a geometric object using data from a real-time laser rangefinder. Because of the volume of data we choose to preprocess each range image to find the edge points. Then 3D lines and circles are extracted from these edge points. By matching these extracted curves to the model of each object we are able to compute the object pose, that is its position and orientation. Some examples are given of the operation of these algorithms using simulated range data.

Computation of ventricular volume and the diagnostic quantities like ejection-fraction ratio, heart output, mass, etc. requires detection of myocardial boundaries. The problem of segmenting an image into separate regions is one of the most significant problems in vision. Terzopoulos et al., have proposed an approach to detect the contour regions of complex shapes, assuming a user selected an initial contour not very far from the desired solution. We propose an optimal dynamic programming (DP) based method to detect contours. It is exact and not iterative. We first consider a list of uncertainty for each point selected by the user, wherein the point is allowed to move. Then, a search window is created from two consecutive lists. We then apply a dynamic programming (DP) algorithm to obtain the optimal contour passing through these lists of uncertainty, optimally utilizing the given information. For tracking, the final contour obtained at one frame is sampled and used as initial points for the next frame. Then, the same DP process is applied. We have demonstrated the algorithms on natural objects in a large spectrum of applications, including interactive segmentation of the regions of interest in medical images.

The maintenance and repair of wind energy converters is a significant cost factor. Therefore it is mandatory to minimise the downtime caused by unnoticed faults. A key contributor to the load on the wind turbine installation and to material fatigue is the plant's unavoidable vibration. We report about a development of a new 1.5 mu m laser vibrometer system to measure vibrations of rotating blades of wind turbines up to a distance of several hundred meters - based on a very precise imaged tracking system.

This paper presents a general process for an automatic reading of analog instruments. The calibration of analog watermeters serves for a demonstration of this algorithm. Reading a measuring instrument means detecting the position of scales and pointers in the intensity image in order to determine the value displayed by the measuring instrument. The reading process involves the detection of its boundaries, scales, pointers and lettering elements by using pattern recognition algorithms and a-priori information about the geometry and the elements of the meter. First, a validation for the correct type has to be done by checking the actual, detected elements with the elements defined in the type-description. Following the determination of the indicated measurement value, the intensity image of the watermeter is compressed and stored to ensure a given quality standard by protocolling each measurement step. The calibration process consists of five reading phases. A series of watermeters of the same type is calibrated in one run with water quality measurement. The outlined automated approach to the problem is faster, more reliable, stable and cheaper than the manual reading and checking of the meters performed now. Results concerning time, accuracy and reliability are given at the end of the paper.

The conventional PHD and CPHD filters presume that the probability p(D)(x) that a measurement will be collected from a target with state-vector x (the state-dependent probability of detection) is known a priori. However, in many applications this presumption is false. A few methods have been devised for estimating the probability of detection, but they typically presume that p(D)(x) is constant in both time and the region of interest. This paper introduces CPHD/PHD filters that are capable of multitarget track-before-detect operation even when probability of detection is not known and, moreover, when it is not necessarily constant, either temporally or spatially. Furthermore, these filters are potentially computationally tractable. We begin by deriving CPHD/PHD filter equations for the case when probability of detection is unknown but the clutter model is known a priori. Then, building on the results of a companion paper, we note that CPHD/PHD filters can be derived for the case when neither probability of detection or the background clutter are known.

In this study, the best engagement ordering for a friendly fire unit against multiple targets is considered. This target prioritization is performed by computing a priority function based on the range and direction of a target using the images from an optical device. We automatically obtain the features of a target like x, y coordinates, intensity and size from the image sequence by the help of a tracker software. These features are used to estimate the range and the direction of each target. In our range estimation algorithm, camera properties (focal length, angle of view) and the features of the target extracted from tracker are used to find the z coordinate of the target. We estimate the range by using the x, y and z coordinates of the target. We assumed the direction is given by the cosine value of the angle between the vector pointing to the friendly force from the target and the vector of the movement of the target. We apply the direction algorithm by the help of the x, y, z coordinates of the target. After the estimation of the range and the direction, we applied target prioritization techniques. In the prioritization process, an expected utility value is computed for each possible engagement ordering using some features of the forces like range, direction, and mean rate of fire;then the ordering which maximizes this value is chosen. The aim of the friendly fire unit may vary: In some cases he may want to annihilate as many targets as possible regardless of the threats they pose whereas in other cases he may prefer to maximize the removed threat. The utility value used in all these cases may vary between zero and one. The strength of these range and direction estimation algorithms on engagement ordering are tested through simulated data and the results are approximately the same with the correct range and direction values.

Watermark detection plays a crucial role in multimedia copyright protection and has traditionally been tackled using correlation-based algorithms. However, correlation-based detection is not actually the best choice, as it does not utilize the distributional characteristics of the image being marked. Accordingly, an efficient watermark detection scheme for DWT coefficients is proposed as optimal for non-additive schemes. Based on the statistical decision theory, the proposed method is derived according to Bayes' decision theory, the Neyman-Pearson criterion, and the distribution of the DWT coefficients,thereby minimizing the missed detection probability subject to a given false alarm probability. The proposed method was tested in the context of robustness, and the results confirmed the superiority of the proposed technique over conventional correlation-based detection method.

In a previous paper we have introduced a new continuation method which does not require an analytical model, but only an experimental time series. Using a predictor-corrector technique the method tracks an unstable orbit of a map, through different bifurcation regimes by varying an accessible system parameter. In this method the continuation parameter was varied deterministically. That is, the location of the parameter at each continuation step is chosen by the experimenter. In this paper we introduce a similar algorithm, but now the parameter is varied randomly. We will refer to this algorithm as random-walk control or stochastic tracking. This algorithm is useful to experimentalists for canceling the effect of drift in experiments, which is always inevitable at some level.

Many vascular clinical applications require a vessel segmentation process that is able to extract both the centerline and the surface of the blood vessels. However, noise and topology issues (such as kissing vessels) prevent existing algorithm from being able to easily retrieve such a complex system as the brain vasculature. We propose here a new blood vessel tracking algorithm that 1) detects the vessel centerline;2) provides a local radius estimate;and 3) extracts a dense set of points at the blood vessel surface. This algorithm is based on a RANSAC-based robust fitting of successive cylinders along the vessel. Our method was validated against the Multiple Hypothesis tracking (MHT) algorithm on 10 3DRA patient data of the brain vasculature. Over 744 blood vessels of various sizes were considered for each patient. Our results demonstrated a greater ability of our algorithm to track small, tortuous and touching vessels (96% success rate), compared to MHT (65% success rate). The computed centerline precision was below 1 voxel when compared to MHT. Moreover, our results were obtained with the same set of parameters for all patients and all blood vessels, except for the seed point for each vessel, also necessary for MHT. The proposed algorithm is thereafter able to extract the full intracranial vasculature with little user interaction.
