Simple techniques for character recognition do not perform very well, but they are fast compared to more effective but also more complex methods. In this paper we describe how such simple techniques can be used as preprocessors for eliminating possibilities that the main classifier has to deal with. This is achieved in three different ways: by attempting a segmentation of word into characters, by reducing the number of the prototypes to match with the sample, and by providing a set of constraints for the matching. Experiments on an address data base provided by the U.S. Postal Service have shown that the method reduces the classification time by almost 60%, while it does not introduce any errors.

In this paper we look at various algorithms for approximating the target-measurement association probabilities of the Joint Probabilistic Data Association Filter (JPDAF). We consider their computational complexity and compare their performance with respect to the Mean Optimal Subpattern Assignment (MOSPA) statistic in a scenario involving closely-spaced targets.

One the major difficulties of microarray technology relate to the processing of large and - importantly - errorloaded images of the dots on the chip surface. Whatever the source of these errors, those obtained in the first stage of data acquisition - segmentation - are passed down to the subsequent processes, with deleterious results. As it has been demonstrated recently that biological systems have evolved algorithms that are mathematically efficient, this contribution attempts to test an algorithm that mimics a bacterial-"patented" algorithm for the search of available space and nutrients to find, "zero-in" and eventually delimitate the features existent on the microarray surface.

The article describes the algorithm of finding the highest transverse momentum muon based on the signals from fast RPC detectors in CMS experiment at the LHC collider in CERN (Geneva). Very fast progress in FPGA performance makes it possible to build Pattern Comparator Processor (PAC) [1] using this technology. Compilation and simulation of different configurations of PAC are discussed. Improved algorithm which requires smaller resources in the FPGAs is presented.

We propose, what is to our knowledge, a new approach to the analysis of detection signals from optical sensors. The technique is based on the pattern recognition algorithms that belong to the family of composite linear filters. We focus on the information recovery from the reflectivity spectrum of a Bragg sensor measured with an optical spectrum analyzer. However the method is applicable to the extraction of information in other types of sensors, where in general the detection signal is multidimensional and includes data related to several measured parameters.

A low cost 16x16 un-cooled pyroelectric detector array, allied with advanced tracking and detection algorithms, has enabled the development of a universal detector with a wide range of applications in people monitoring and homeland security. Violation of access control systems, whether controlled by proximity card, biometrics, swipe card or similar, may occur by 'tailgating' or 'piggybacking' where an `approved' entrant with a valid entry card is accompanied by a closely spaced 'non-approved' entrant. The violation may be under duress, where the accompanying person is attempting to enter a secure facility by force or threat. Alternatively, the violation may be benign where staff members collude either through habit or lassitude, either with each other or with third parties, without considering the security consequences. Examples of the latter could include schools, hospitals or maternity homes. The 16x16 pyroelectric array is integrated into a detector or imaging system which incorporates data processing, target extraction and decision making algorithms. The algorithms apply interpolation to the array output, allowing a higher level of resolution than might otherwise be expected from such a low resolution array. The pyroelectric detection principle means that the detection will work in variable light conditions and even in complete darkness, if required. The algorithms can monitor the shape, form, temperature and number of persons in the scene and utilise this information to determine whether a violation has occurred or not. As people are seen as `hot blobs' and are not individually recognisable, civil liberties are not infringed in the detection process. The output from the detector is a simple alarm signal which may act as input to the access control system as an alert or to trigger CCTV image display and storage. The applications for a tailgate detector can be demonstrated across many medium security applications where there are no physical means to prevent this

The use of the matched filter to automatically estimate the pose of a Low Earth Orbiting (LEG) satellite from imagery measured with an adaptive optics telescope is explored. The satellite pose estimation problem is studied for a broad range of atmospheric turbulence levels and target visual magnitudes. Several algorithms which use various types of image preprocessing are examined in an effort to determine the performance bounds on the matched filter for this application. Results presented here show that under normal imaging conditions, the matched filter approach proposed can be expected to yield correct pose estimations in over 80% of the trials considered. Additionally, it is shown that a significant portion of errors are between two poses that are very similar in appearance, such as views of the target about an axis of symmetry. When symmetry-based errors are allowed, correct pose estimations are obtained in over 90% of the cases tested.

Target detection in clutter depends sensitively on the spatial structure of the latter. In particular, it is the ratio of the target size to the clutter inhomogeneity scale which is of crucial importance. Indeed, looking for the leopard in the background of leopard skin is a difficult task. Hence quantifying thermal clutter is essential to the development of successful detection algorithms and signature analysis. This paper describes an attempt at clutter characterization along with several applications using calibrated thermal imagery collected by the Keweenaw Research Center. The key idea is to combine spatial and intensity statistics of the clutter into one number in order to characterize intensity variations over the length scale imposed by the target. Furthermore, when properly normalized, this parameter appears independent of temporal meteorological variation, thereby constituting a background scene invariant. This measure has a basis in analysis of variance and is related to digital signal processing fundamentals. Statistical analysis of thermal images is presented with promising results.

The design of real-valued composite filters for optical pattern recognition and classification is considered. A procedure to design a real-valued minimum average correlation energy (MACE) filter is developed. Also, the design of a real MVSDF-MACE filter that minimizes the output variance due to input noise while maintaining a sharp correlation peak is developed. Computer simulation indicates that the performance of these real filters is almost as good as that of the complex filters.

The Modified Forward Backward Linear Prediction, MFBLP, is an effective method for data dimensionality reduction and combined with eigen-vector and eigen-value techniques significant improvements in signal isolation have been shown and discussed in previous notes of this technique. In the present work, a Stochastic Gradient Descent technique is utilized to limit the dimensionality reduction of the MFBLP and the results of this technique is compared in relation to an application of the eigen-vector eigen-value technique to limit the dimensionality reduction of the MFBLP. By using a correlation metric we are able to discuss the measure of goodness of the new implementation of the MFBLP, discuss its potential, and some of its applications in this analysis. The processing approach is for active sensor systems and discussed for comparison.
