Temporal frame integration performance in white noise is investigated as a function of the sensor point spread function (PSF), the uncompensated sensor jitter level and the velocity bin quantization used in the algorithm implementation. The analysis is provided for both recursive and non-recursive frame integration implementations. The results show that for a given sensor PSF, jitter level and velocity bin quantization, a limit exists on how many frames can be effectively integrated assuming constant velocity hypotheses for the target. It is also shown that to obtain maximum performance from multi-frame integration, knowledge of the residual rms jitter level needs to be included as part of the optimal space-time filter. A simple non- linear method for reducing the frame integration loss when there is uncompensated sensor jitter present in the data is also presented.

We present a novel method for automated anomaly detection on autofluorescent data provided by the National Institute of Health (NIH). This is motivated by the need for new tools to improve the capability of diagnosing macular degeneration in its early stages, track the progression over time, and test the effectiveness of new treatment methods. In previous work, macular anomalies have been detected automatically through multiscale analysis procedures such as wavelet analysis or dimensionality reduction algorithms followed by a classification algorithm, e.g., Support Vector Machine. The method that we propose is a Vectorized Matched Filtering (VMF) algorithm combined with Laplacian Eigenmaps (LE), a nonlinear dimensionality reduction algorithm with locality preserving properties. By applying LE, we are able to represent the data in the form of eigenimages, some of which accentuate the visibility of anomalies. We pick significant eigenimages and proceed with the VMF algorithm that classifies anomalies across all of these eigenimages simultaneously. To evaluate our performance, we compare our method to two other schemes: a matched filtering algorithm based on anomaly detection on single images and a combination of PCA and VMF. LE combined with VMF algorithm performs best, yielding a high rate of accurate anomaly detection. This shows the advantage of using a nonlinear approach to represent the data and the effectiveness of VMF, which operates on the images as a data cube rather than individual images.

The design of optical sensor systems is based on the interaction between the photons of the electromagnetic radiation and suspended particles in water. The objectives of this study area are to design and develop a dwi-detector optical sensor for measuring the concentration of total suspended solids, TSS, in polluted water samples. An algorithm which requires calibration analysis has been derived for estimating TSS concentrations. The proposed optical system uses a single light emitting diode, LED, as an emitter and two phototransistors are used as detectors. Detected radiations were measured at scattering angles of 900 and 1800 between the source and the detectors. The algorithm produced a high correlation coefficient and low root mean square error value.

In this article, we present a method for estimating the translational motion parameters of a target from its ISAR signature. The method exploits the phase of the target's frequency response and does not require two-dimensional Fourier processing. The basis for this method is a phase difference indicator which converges to an absolute minimum when the phase is compensated with the true values of the motion parameters. The analysis of the phase difference indicator leads to an algorithm for motion parameter optimization. Processing of simulated and experimental ISAR signatures demonstrates that the phase difference method is extremely computationally efficient and equally accurate when compared to robust techniques based on entropy or Fisher information indicators.

Binary self-coded filters (BSCFs) are easily implemented optically. BSCFs are based on the optimization functions of the Hopfield model by nonsynchronous iterative neuron algorithms. Less filters are needed to carry out the same recognition task, compared with other methods. The error-tolerance ability is also very strong. All target objects can be correctively recognized when the characteristic codes are properly chosen. Starting from different initial states, we can obtain solution close to the overall optimum of the net.

Hyperspectral signatures for surface mines in airborne images can have substantial variability due to the environmental conditions and subpixel mixing. Signatures are also affected by the condition of the mine. We show that a subspace representation for mine spectral properties can be used as the basis for an algorithm for subpixel mine detection that is invariant to the illumination and atmospheric conditions. A background model is estimated from the image data to support subpixel detection. The intrinsic spectral reflectance of the mine is the only input required by the algorithm. We demonstrate the performance of the algorithm for several mine types over a range of conditions and altitudes in visible through near-infrared hyperspectral images. Several of the mine types appear at a scale that is significantly smaller than a pixel.

An important issue in the fusion of multisensor data in the context of scene interpretation and multitarget tracking is the ability to evaluate and characterize sensor performance and establish confidence factors for the individual sensors. This paper presents a methodology for adaptively determining sensor confidence factors based upon sensor performance as measured by the degree of consensus among the various sensors. The fusion process is based upon evidential reasoning and statistical clustering which utilize the sensor confidence factors. The sensor confidence factors are based upon sensor characteristics, environmental conditions, and sensor performance. The individual sensor performance is derived in terms of the fusion results and the degree of consensus between the individual sensor data and the fusion data. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the technique and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology in scene interpretation.

With enhanced processing capability of mobile platforms, augmented reality (AR) has been considered a promising technology for achieving enhanced user experiences (UX). Augmented reality is to impose virtual information, e.g., videos and images, on to a live-view digital display. UX on real-world environment via the display can be effectively enhanced with the adoption of interactive AR technology. Enhancement on UX can be beneficial for digital learning systems. There are existing research works based on AR targeting for the design of e-learning systems. However, none of these work focuses on providing three-dimensional (3-D) object modeling for enhanced UX based on interactive AR techniques. In this paper, the 3-D interactive augmented reality-enhanced learning (IARL) systems will be proposed to provide enhanced UX for digital learning. The proposed IARL systems consist of two major components, including the markerless pattern recognition (MPR) for 3-D models and velocity-based object tracking (VOT) algorithms. Realistic implementation of proposed IARL system is conducted on Android-based mobile platforms. UX on digital learning can be greatly improved with the adoption of proposed IARL systems.

In order to accurately recognize textual images of a book, we often employ various models including iconic model (for character classification), dictionary (for word recognition), character segmentation model, etc., which are derived from prior knowledge. Imperfections in these models affect recognition performance inevitably. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised learning technique that adapts multiple models on-the-fly on a homogeneous input data set to achieve a better overall recognition accuracy fully automatically. The major challenge for this unsupervised learning process is, how to make models improve rather than damage one another? In our framework, models measure disagreements between their input data and output data. We propose a policy based on disagreements to adapt multiple models simultaneously (or alternately) safely. We will construct a book recognition system based on this framework, and demonstrate its feasibility.

Chinese VLBI Network has been successfully applied for the tracking of the earth satellite Tance-1, the lunar satellites Smart-1 and Chang'E-1. However, in the case that the orbit of the satellite has the large predicted errors, the correlator model will not be precise enough that the tracking system can not produce good fringes and VLBI observables. Based on the blind fringe-searching results by taking advantages of satellite telemetry signals, we developed an algorithm to predict correlator model parameters. In the process of model parameters prediction, the model delay polynomials are calculated from the predicted orbit, followed by the comparisons with delays obtained from the blind fringe-searching results. The delayed differences which vary much slower and smaller than the model delay is then used to form the observation equation, and finally the correction of the model parameters are predicted with the least square method. The algorithm has been implemented in the software of correlation sub-system, which worked smoothly and successfully in the real time VLBI tracking of Chang'E-1 satellite.
