In this paper we present an algorithm that segments a scanned, compound document into halftone and non-halftone areas. Our work is intended as a precursor to sophisticated document processing applications (descreening, compression, document content analysis, etc.) for which undetected halftones may cause serious adverse affects. Our method is of very low computational and memory complexity and performs only a single pass on the scanned document. Halftone regions of arbitrary size and shape are detected on compound multilingual documents in a completely automated fashion without any prior knowledge on the type and resolution of the halftones to be detected. The proposed technique can be adjusted to determine halftones of particular dpi resolution or decompose detected halftones to constituent resolutions. We obtain high detection probabilities on compound multilingual documents containing halftones and fine text.

It is well known that the static and dynamic structural response of materials can indirectly indicate the health of structural systems. The changes in natural frequencies, mode shapes, and stiffness matrices due to damage are utilized for determination of occurrence, location and extent of damages. In recent years, many researchers have developed global damage detection algorithms using structural modal response. However most of these methods are off-line techniques based on frequency domain data. In this paper we have proposed real-time damage detection methods based on time domain data. In this method damages in the structure can be detected while the structure is kept on its regular use. The algorithm determines reduction in stiffness and/or damping of the structural elements, while assuming that the mass of the structure does not vary due to damage. This algorithm is based on the state space representation of the structure, which is identified from the time domain data. We have also determined a linear transformation matrix for converting the identified model into a state space representation based on physical coordinates of the structural system. The self-organization and learning capabilities of neural networks can be effectively used for structural damage detection purpose. In this paper a hybrid method for the damage detection has been proposed by combining the features of best achievable eigenvector method and neural network classification techniques for detection of location and extent of damage in the structural systems. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified by using simple three-bar truss structure and a cantilever beam test article.

An encoder-based rate smoothing technique is developed to reduce the rate burstiness in video coding. At first, we propose a new source model to accurately estimate the rate-distortion (R-D) function of each video frame with very low computational complexity. Based on the estimated R-D function, in the second step, we propose a rate smoothing algorithm to make a tradeoff between the constant bit rate and the constant picture quality. The tradeoff forces the output video stream to have both a smoothed rate shape and a consistent video presentation quality, which is highly desirable in video coding and transportation.

We consider the problem of generating temporally consistent point cloud segmentations from streaming RGB-D data, where every incoming frame extends existing labels to new points or contributes new labels while maintaining the labels for pre-existing segments. Our approach generates an over-segmentation based on voxel cloud connectivity, where a modified k-means algorithm selects supervoxel seeds and associates similar neighboring voxels to form segments. Given the data stream from a potentially mobile sensor, we solve for the camera transformation between consecutive frames using a joint optimization over point correspondences and image appearance. The aligned point cloud may then be integrated into a consistent model coordinate frame. Previously labeled points are used to mask incoming points from the new frame, while new and previous boundary points extend the existing segmentation. We evaluate the algorithm on newly-generated RGB-D datasets.

Most basic change detection algorithms use a pixel-based approach. Whereas such approach is quite well defined for monitoring important area changes (such as urban growth monitoring) in low resolution images, an object based approach seems more relevant when the change detection is specifically aimed toward targets (such as small buildings and vehicles). In this paper, we present an approach that mixes radiometric and geometric features to qualify the changed zones. The goal is to establish bounds (appearance, disappearance, substitution...) between the detected changes and the underlying objects. We proceed by first clustering the change map (containing each pixel bitemporal radiosity) in different classes using the entropy-kmeans algorithm. Assuming that most man-made objects have a polygonal shape, a polygonal approximation algorithm is then used in order to characterize the resulting zone shapes. Hence allowing us to refine the primary rough classification, by integrating the polygon orientations in the state space. Tests are currently conducted on Quickbird data.

This article describes a new 3D RGBD image feature, referred to as iGRaND, for use in real-time systems that use these sensors for tracking, motion capture, or robotic vision applications. iGRaND features use a novel local reference frame derived from the image gradient and depth normal (hence iGRaND) that is invariant to scale and viewpoint for Lambertian surfaces. Using this reference frame, Euclidean invariant feature components are computed at keypoints which fuse local geometric shape information with surface appearance information. The performance of the feature for real-time odometry is analyzed and its computational complexity and accuracy is compared with leading alternative 3D features.

In helical cone-beam computerized tomography, the data within the Tam-Danielsson window is sufficient for exact reconstruction of the images. In some practical situation, the projections outside the Tam-Danielsson window are available that indicate the data redundancy. In this work, we investigate image reconstruction on n-PI lines from data within n-PI window. We performed a preliminary numerical study, and the results in these studies shown that our algorithm can exactly reconstruct images from n-PI data.

Planned for launch in June 1998, the Earth Observing System (EOS) AM1-spacecraft will carry five instruments which will be placed into a polar,sun-synchronous, 705 km orbit. EOS AM-1 will cross the equator at 10:30a.m. local time when daily cloud cover is typically at a minimum over land, such that surface features can be more easily observed The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) of Japan is providing the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer(ASTER) instrument. The ASTER instrument is a high performance spatial imager which has three sensors (VNIR: Visible Near Infrared Radiometer, SWIR: Short Wave Infrared Radiometer, and TIR: Thermal Infrared Radiometer). The interval between the nearest two orbits is 172 km at the equator. The swath of sensors is 60 km. Therefore ASTER must have pointing capability in order to cover the whole surface of the earth. ASTER accepts xARs (Acquisition Requests) from many users. Because of constrained spacecraft data capacity, ASTER's data acquisition duty cycle is Limited. These conditions make the scheduling algorithm very complex. This paper presents the data acquisition scheduling algorithm which will perform the most effective scheduling from the inputs which consist of many xARs and which is derived from prioritization information.

We introduce a maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm and a sparse learning via iterative minimization (SLIM) algorithm to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. Both MAP and SLIM are sparse signal recovery algorithms with excellent sidelobe suppression and high resolution properties. The former cyclically maximizes the a posteriori probability density function for a given sparsity promoting prior, while the latter cyclically minimizes a regularized least squares cost function. We show how MAP and SLIM can be adapted to the SAR imaging application and used to enhance the image quality. We evaluate the performance of MAP and SLIM using the simulated complex-valued backscattered data from a backhoe vehicle. The numerical results show that both MAP and SLIM satisfactorily suppress the sidelobes and yield higher resolution than the conventional matched filter or delay-and-sum (DAS) approach. MAP and SLIM outperform the widely used compressive sampling matching pursuit (CoSaMP) algorithm, which requires the delicate choice of user parameters. Compared with the recently developed iterative adaptive approach (IAA), MAP and SLIM are computationally more efficient, especially with the help of fast Fourier transform (FFT). Also, the a posteriori distribution given by the algorithms provides us with a basis for the analysis of the statistical properties of the SAR image pixels.
