We discuss the use of low-cost infrared sensors in differentiating and localizing Commonly encountered target primitives in indoor environments, such as planes, corners, edges, and cylinders. Single intensity readings are highly dependent on target, location and properties and, this dependence cannot be represented simply. We propose a method that can achieve position-invariant target differentiation without relying on absolute intensity readings and verify it experimentally. The correct identification rates for planes, 90degrees corners and edges, and cylinders are 90%, 100%, 82.5%, and 92.5%, respectively. The distance of the target can be estimated with an average error of 0.59 cm and the azimuth angle can be estimated with an error of 1.58degrees.

This paper first reviews some basic properties of the discrete chirp-Fourier transform and then present an adaptive chirp-Fourier transform, a generalization of the amplitude and phase estimation of sinusoids (APES) algorithm proposed by Li and Stoica for sinusoidal signals. We finally applied it to the ISAR imaging of maneuvering targets.

In this paper we have studied what performances can be obtained by mapping processing image algorithms on parallel architectures. For this reason we have focused our attention on a particular problems we have studied a processing chain to detect ship wakes in SAR images. It allowed us to test low and medium level algorithms. Because of the noisy nature of SAR images great attention has been put on the choice of the most appropriate filtering technique. It has been done both through theoretical considerations on the nature of noise and experimental results on filtered images. The chain has been implemented on a sequential machine like MicroVAX II and on some parallel architectures based on eight transputers IMS T800. The performances obtained in this way have been discussed and some general considerations have been deduced from them.

Mesoscale oceanographic features are important aspects of ocean circulation. The high volume of satellite-derived oceanographic data coupled with the high level of human skill associated with the detection of oceanographic features in the data has necessitated automating the interpretation process. Morphological edge detectors produce better results than the conventional template- and differentiation-based edge detectors. A grayscale morphological edge-detection algorithms is developed for automatic delineation of mesoscale structure in digital satellite IR images of the ocean. We compare performances of three morphological edge detectors in sea surface temperature fields. We provide experimental results on images from the North Atlantic under various image settings.

The ability of a robot to find a goal in an unknown environment is significantly improved from previous path planners with the synthesis of intelligence and reflexive algorithms as a path planning approach. A hybrid expert system vector field (HESV) path planner is introduced and tested in 100 map scenarios using a custom robotic simulation shell. The method combines a trap detection expert system, a low-level reflexive obstacle avoidance algorithm, and a trap evasion expert system, to achieve improved performance without sacrificing computational efficiency. Simulation results and evaluations are presented for the potential field, vector field, and HESV techniques. HESV's expert systems have been simplified to illustrate the performance improvements that result from a small amount of intelligence. Although recommendations for the structure of the path planning system are given, the purpose of the paper is to show the effectiveness of intelligent rules in path planning, rather than to define the actual rules to be used.

This paper addresses pre-detection signal processing of dual-band detection algorithms, a generalized likelihood ratio test and modified sample matrix inversion, are developed for the case of gaussian interference. The associated theoretical detection performance and computational requirements are also derived. General detection performance formulas are provided which can be used to determine the conditions for which the dual-band algorithms provide the greatest improvement in performance. The utility of the dual-band detection algorithms is demonstrated by comparison with the optimal single- and dual-band likelihood ratio tests as well as the single-band GLRT and MSMI algorithms. The dual-band algorithms are also compared with a system using two single-band filter channels whose outputs are combined after thresholding. Results are generated from theoretical formulas and from a simulation, developed at GE, which duplicates the filtering and detection functions of the algorithms.

This paper presents a face detection system that synergizes audio localization and visual face detection. This audiovisual face detection system is based on microphone sound localization, and image processing algorithms. The system integrates the application of sound localization by Time Delay of Arrival and the iterative application of Adaptive Background Segmentation, to robustly perform real-time face detection on a stream of webcam images. Experimental results using an array of 24 microphones and a fixed-view webcam, show that the audiovisual face detection system is able to perform face detection of success rate 97.5% at 0.82 seconds of convergence time, and 5.8Hz display frame rate, on a Pentium IV 2.5GHz.

Recognition of general unconstrained cursive handwriting remains largely unsolved. We present a system for recognizing off-line cursive English text guided in part by global characteristics of the handwriting. A new method for finding the letter boundaries based on minimizing a heuristic cost function is introduced. The function is evaluated at each point along the baseline of the word to find the best possible segmentation points. The algorithm tries to find all the actual letter boundaries and as few additional ones as possible. After a normalization step that removes much of the style variation, the normalized segments are classified by a one hidden layer feedforward neural network. The word recognition algorithms find the segmentation points that are likely to be extraneous and generates all possible final segmentations of the word by either keeping or removing them. Interpreting the output of the neural network as posterior probabilities of letters, it then finds the word that maximizes the probability of having produced the image, over a set of 30,000 words and over all the possible final segmentations. We compared two hypotheses for finding the likelihood of words that are in the lexicon and found that using a Hidden Markov Model of English is significantly less successful than assuming independence among the letters of a word. In our initial test involving multiple writers, 68% of the words were in the top three choices.

In this paper, a method for mobile robot positioning using range data is investigated. A ranging sensor is used to collect range data within an environment modeled as a closed polygon, and a compass is available to provide the ranging sensor with direction. The problem of position uncertainty is defined as the existence of multiple position solutions when angle readings are noiseless. When the compass is not ideal, the problem is further complicated by now having imprecise multiple solutions. Both cases are solved by introducing a function defined as the region entropy, which provides us with the ranging angle directions that minimize the uncertainty in position estimation. A least square position estimation method is then proposed. Finally, an example is used to illustrate the technique described above.
