This study investigated a number of different damage detection algorithms for structural health monitoring of a typical suspension bridge. The Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge, a part of the Interstate 80 in California, was selected for this study. The focus was to implement and validate simple damage detection algorithms for structural health monitoring of complex bridges. Accordingly, the numerical analysis involved development of a high fidelity finite element model of the bridge in order to simulate various structural damage scenarios. The finite element model of the bridge was validated based on the experimental modal properties. A number of damage scenarios were simulated by changing the stiffness of different bridge components including suspenders, main cable, bulkheads and deck. Several vibration-based damage detection methods namely the change in the stiffness, change in the flexibility, change in the uniform load surface and change in the uniform load surface curvature were employed to locate the simulated damages. The investigation here provides the relative merits and shortcomings of these methods when applied to long span suspension bridges. It also shows the applicability of these methods to locate the decay in the structure.

In this paper, two different approaches for horizon picking are examined. The first one is a simple line detection algorithm applied to the full resolution image. The second algorithm is a multiscale line detection algorithm, based on the wavelet transform of the image. Both full resolution and multiresolution line detection algorithms are applied to 2D seismic images and compared in terms of their performance. Results show that the full resolution line detection approach outperforms the multiresolution approach.

Critical dimensions in current and next generation devices are driving the need for tighter overlay registration tolerances and improved overlay metrology tool accuracy and repeatability. Tool matching, performance evaluation, model-based metrology, and a move towards closed-loop image placement control all increase the importance of improved accuracy and calibration methodology. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is introducing a calibrated overlay wafer standard. A number of calibration requirements must be addressed when using this standard, including identification of the best methods for evaluating measurement bias and uncertainties, proper data acquisition and analysis, and the best calibration strategy.

With the rapid growth of the signal and image processing technology in the last several decades has arisen the need for means of evaluating and comparing the numerous algorithms and systems that are created or are being developed. Performance evaluation, in the past, has been mostly ad hoc and incohesive. In this paper we present a systematic step by step approach for the scientific evaluation of signal and image processing algorithms and systems. This approach is based on the methodology of Experimental Design. We illustrate this method by means of an example from the field of automatic object recognition.

The development and evaluation of multi-source, multi-spectral, all-aspect airborne target identification algorithms has been proven to be cumbersome as well as disjointed. The algorithm development capability under this testbed concept encompasses model-based reasoning, information fusion, airborne target identification, and target/sensor phenomenology analysis. The evaluation capability assembles multiple sensor and target types coupled with all aspect viewing in an operationally representative air-to-air environment. The importance of developing better techniques for establishing positive target identification for beyond visual ranges has increased in tactical importance, as a result of the Persian Gulf War. In addition to supporting the evaluation of algorithms and associated sensors, this testbed will support on- going R&D in the Air-To-Air Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR) arena.

Three-dimensional objects in an image, which appear with shading and cast shadows, can be difficult to recognize as single entities, and there can also be problems recognizing the colors of the objects independent of the spectrum of illumination. The removal of shading and cast shadows has often been done in remote sensing by the band-ratio algorithm. A ratio of red to green bands cancels variations of incident light intensity between different points on the same matte object. Finlayson et al. showed that, for physically reasonable illuminant and reflectance spectra, von Kries adaptation gives exact color constancy if a particular linear transformation on the color-matching functions is performed prior to adaptation. The present paper extends this approach to band ratios, and also to the related color-constancy model of Judd (which subtracts the white-reflectance chromaticity instead of dividing by the white-reflectance tristimulus values as von Kries adaptation does). In both cases, invariance requires the illuminant basis functions to be metameric (up to a scale factor) -- with respect to the reference white in the case of Judd adaptation, and with respect to all reflectances in the case of band ratios. The von Kries theory thus seems unique among the simple processing methods.

Manufacturing tools may process wafers in different fashions: by group of lots, by lot by group of wafers, one-by-one in single or multichamber tools,... The order sequence in which wafers are processed in a given step of the manufacturing routing can be used as a valuable source for yield improvement. Within this scope we published on SPIE'S 1996 Microelectronic Manufacturing an Advanced software System to correlate order-sequences versus any yield related metric. Since then we have developed a new generation of Software named POSISCAN which automates the analysis and detection of "order patterns", that is, footprints of the yield being impacted by the order in which the wafers were processed in a specific tool. Yield degradation induced on each process can have a kind of footprint. We have accumulated a wealth of this footprints and developed a very fine knowledge-based algorithms to automatically detect them on every lot. The effectiveness of this automated POSISCAN tool is remarkably high and is having a big impact on time to detection/analysis/root-cause of yield loss.

If a target's motion can be determined, the problem of reconstructing a 3D target image becomes a sparse-aperture imaging problem. That is, the data lies on a random trajectory in k-space, which constitutes a sparse data collection that yields very low-resolution images if backprojection or other standard imaging techniques are used. This paper investigates two moving- target imaging algorithms: the. first is a greedy algorithm based on the CLEAN technique, and the second is a version of Basis Pursuit Denoising. The two imaging algorithms are compared for a realistic moving-target motion history applied to a Xpatch-generated backhoe data set.

A methodology and supporting software tools for obtaining insight and quantitative measures on the accuracy of ATC (automatic target cueing) algorithms are described. Algorithm accuracy is characterized by trade-off curves in which selected performance measures are plotted against each other over a range of algorithm operating points. Performance trade-off curves determined as a function of critical sensor, target and background parameters allow algorithm sensitivity issues to be investigated and provide a basis for evaluating algorithm accuracy effects in the context of specific missions. The evaluation process is founded on an ATC experiment design which defines a challenging but representative "cut" through the multidimensional scenario space associated with the mission under consideration. The experiment design is included in a written test plan which documents the mechanics of the evaluation process and specifies the amount and type of imagery that will be made available for algorithm development and evaluation. tolls for placing confidence bounds on hypothetical algorithm performance trade-off curves provide a basis for addressing the statistical data adequacy issue in relation to the experiment design.
