A methodology capable of quantitatively assessing the quality of hyperspectral data has become increasingly desirable as hyperspectral remote sensing technology migrates into operational systems. The quality of spectral data depends on many factors including collection parameters charactering the sensor and the scene, and the desired spectral products. Therefore, there is a recognized urgent need to understand the phenomenology associated with the collection parameters and how they relate to the quality of the information extracted from the spectral data for different applications. If such relationships can be established, data collection requirements and tasking strategies can then be formulated for these applications. A spectral quality equation with an excellent least-squares fit was established for object/anomaly detection in an earlier work [1]. This paper describes a spectral quality equation established for material identification. This spectral quality equation relates the collection parameters (i.e. spatial resolution, spectral resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and scene complexity) to the probability of correct identification (Pi) of materials at a given probability of false alarms (Pfa).

We propose, what is to our knowledge, a new approach to the analysis of detection signals from optical sensors. The technique is based on the pattern recognition algorithms that belong to the family of composite linear filters. We focus on the information recovery from the reflectivity spectrum of a Bragg sensor measured with an optical spectrum analyzer. However the method is applicable to the extraction of information in other types of sensors, where in general the detection signal is multidimensional and includes data related to several measured parameters.

In this paper we present an algorithm that segments a scanned, compound document into halftone and non-halftone areas. Our work is intended as a precursor to sophisticated document processing applications (descreening, compression, document content analysis, etc.) for which undetected halftones may cause serious adverse affects. Our method is of very low computational and memory complexity and performs only a single pass on the scanned document. Halftone regions of arbitrary size and shape are detected on compound multilingual documents in a completely automated fashion without any prior knowledge on the type and resolution of the halftones to be detected. The proposed technique can be adjusted to determine halftones of particular dpi resolution or decompose detected halftones to constituent resolutions. We obtain high detection probabilities on compound multilingual documents containing halftones and fine text.

In helical cone-beam computerized tomography, the data within the Tam-Danielsson window is sufficient for exact reconstruction of the images. In some practical situation, the projections outside the Tam-Danielsson window are available that indicate the data redundancy. In this work, we investigate image reconstruction on n-PI lines from data within n-PI window. We performed a preliminary numerical study, and the results in these studies shown that our algorithm can exactly reconstruct images from n-PI data.

Foundation principles of multichannel real-time information processing system, which is solving a problem of automatic object tracking, are considered in this work. Image processing algorithms, which are used for three-channel system foundation and optimally approaching for system core - Microprocessor Neuro Matrix NM6403 are realized. Information processing is accomplished with using of Hopfield neural network, one 384x288 frame processing time is about 100... 140 ms.

The Army Research Laboratory has recently collaborated with Raytheon to determine the effects of various target signature phenomena on the performance of a detection pre-screening processing chain. These signature phenomena for plastic mines were predicted by ARL's high fidelity electromagnetic models and then observed in airborne X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The agreement of the modeled results with experimental data was then used to guide pre-screener design. In this paper we present predicted plastic mine signatures generated by ARL and compare the results with actual target samples extracted from X-Band SAR data. We then briefly describe the new prescreener algorithm and examine modeling results for other frequency bands in an effort to determine if similar notions can be exploited in these bands as well.

Many optimization problems that arise in multi-target tracking and fusion applications are known to be NP-complete, i.e., believed to have worst-case complexities that are exponential in problem size. Recently, many such NP-complete problems have been shown to display threshold phenomena: it is possible to define a parameter such that the probability of a random problem instance having a solution jumps from 1 to 0 at a specific value of the parameter. It is also found that the amount of resources needed to solve the problem instance peaks at the transition point. Among the problems found to display this behavior are graph coloring (aka clustering, relevant for multi-target tracking), satisfiability (which occurs in resource allocation and planning problem), and the travelling salesperson problem. Physicists studying these problems have found intriguing similarities to phase transitions in spin models of statistical mechanics. Many methods previously used to analyze spin glasses have been used to explain some of the properties of the behavior at the transition point. It turns out that the transition happens because the fitness landscape of the problem changes as the parameter is varied. Some algorithms have been introduced that exploit this knowledge of the structure of the fitness landscape. In this paper, we review some of the experimental and theoretical work on threshold phenomena in optimization problems and indicate how optimization problems from tracking and sensor resource allocation could be analyzed using these results.

A need exists for greater situational awareness at the lower echelons of the Army. Radio Frequency (RF) sensors on small, lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) could provide lower echelon commanders with all-weather reconnaissance, early warning, and target acquisition;however, the designs of these RF sensors are limited by the projected size and weight restrictions on the payload for a class 11 UAV. Consequently, these designs may favor combining simple RF sensor hardware with digital-signal processing (DSP) solutions over more sophisticated radar hardware. In this paper, we show the potential of simple, low cost RF sensors with hemispherical antenna coverage to overcome these limitations. The proposed RF sensor system uses DSP and pre-defined UAV flight patterns to detect and track moving targets from range and Doppler information. Our objective is to conceive and model a suite of software options that, by combining UAV flight patterns and processing algorithms, will be able to detect and track moving targets. In order to accomplish this, we are building a simulation that uses sensor models, target models, and battlefield dynamics to predict the targeting capabilities of the RF sensor system. We will use this simulation (1) to determine the tradeoffs between sensor complexity (and cost) and the military significance of the information gathered, and (2) to describe sensor error budgets for endgame lethality models.

One of the powerful approaches to demodulate a single fringe-pattern is the regularized phase tracking (RPT) technique. We present here some modifications in the algorithm, which consist in the addition of the modulation estimation and the modification of the minimization algorithm. With these changes, the RPT technique can be used in the demodulation of non-normalized fringe patterns with significative improvement in the processing time.
