The article describes the algorithm of finding the highest transverse momentum muon based on the signals from fast RPC detectors in CMS experiment at the LHC collider in CERN (Geneva). Very fast progress in FPGA performance makes it possible to build Pattern Comparator Processor (PAC) [1] using this technology. Compilation and simulation of different configurations of PAC are discussed. Improved algorithm which requires smaller resources in the FPGAs is presented.

Theoretical resolution limits of evaluation of centroid shift in fiber optic Bragg grating sensors are analyzed. In the theoretical model, it is assumed that random additive Gaussian noise in a sensor signal acquisition equipment is the main origin of the system error. To provide noise resistant demodulation, a new optimal signal processing algorithm is suggested. It allows accurate detection of the Bragg wavelength shifts within large range and keeps resolution very close to theoretical limit imposed by a random noise. The new demodulation technique is also compared with well known centroid detection algorithm.

We discuss the use of low-cost infrared sensors in differentiating and localizing Commonly encountered target primitives in indoor environments, such as planes, corners, edges, and cylinders. Single intensity readings are highly dependent on target, location and properties and, this dependence cannot be represented simply. We propose a method that can achieve position-invariant target differentiation without relying on absolute intensity readings and verify it experimentally. The correct identification rates for planes, 90degrees corners and edges, and cylinders are 90%, 100%, 82.5%, and 92.5%, respectively. The distance of the target can be estimated with an average error of 0.59 cm and the azimuth angle can be estimated with an error of 1.58degrees.

Face recognition based on principal component analysis (PCA) using eigenfaces is popular in face recognition markets. In this paper we present a comparison between various optoelectronic face recognition techniques and principal component analysis (PCA) based technique for face recognition. Computer simulations are used to study the effectiveness of PCA based technique especially for facial images with a high level of distortion. Results are then compared to various distortion-invariant optoelectronic face recognition algorithms such as synthetic discriminant functions (SDF), projection-slice SDF, optical correlator based neural networks, and pose estimation based correlation.

Critical dimensions in current and next generation devices are driving the need for tighter overlay registration tolerances and improved overlay metrology tool accuracy and repeatability. Tool matching, performance evaluation, model-based metrology, and a move towards closed-loop image placement control all increase the importance of improved accuracy and calibration methodology. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is introducing a calibrated overlay wafer standard. A number of calibration requirements must be addressed when using this standard, including identification of the best methods for evaluating measurement bias and uncertainties, proper data acquisition and analysis, and the best calibration strategy.

The confocal imaging algorithm is applied to retrieve the profile of 1-D rough surfaces with non-gaussian spectra. Different forms of the autocovariance function are tried in the simulation, gaussian included for reference. The capability and the limitations of the algorithm for each function are to be set in terms of the parameters of roughness such as the rms and the correlation length.

This paper describes results of a tool development process and still on-going research program in multilevel algorithm design and validation for multisensor systems. Our work covers both the algorithm design process including the simulation efforts and the implementation of the algorithms into the sensor node prepared for real-time processing within a vision system network. The sensor node hardware is based on the System on Programmable Chip (SOPC)-Technology. This gives us the flexibility to interface different kinds of sensor elements (matrix-, line-sensors) and the processing-power to provide real-time possibilities in height data-rate applications. At the point today our hardware module for Vision applications also uses a CPU module. This results in a high flexibility concerning the communication efforts. Our design can provide the use of CPU-modules within the SOPC design also. Mapping algorithms into a distributed sensor network will be done in either a centralized or decentralized way. That means the algorithm will be running on one sensor node or a part of the algorithm is implemented on some others nodes within the network. Beginning at the design and simulation level different kind of levels are opened for optimization, test and validate the developed algorithm. We present the architectural framework that supports the multilevel test and validation process.

The detection of objects composed of several regions by means of maximum likelihood based filters is analysed. The target is assumed to have different unknown mean values in each of its regions. First, the cases where the number of actual distinct regions is known is considered. Also, we analyse the cases when an estimation of the actual configuration of the mean values in the target region is needed. A simplified filter that reduces the computational complexity is also proposed. The statistical performance is theoretically analysed and tested in computer experiments dealing with real images.

In this paper we present an algorithm to track a convoy of several targets in a scene using acoustic sensor array data. The tracking algorithm is based on template of the direction of arrival (DOA) angles for the leading target. Often the first target is the closest target to the sensor array and hence the loudest with good signal to noise ratio. Several steps were used to generate a template of the DOA angle for the leading target, namely, (a) the angle at the present instant should be close to the angle at the previous instant and (b) the angle at the present instant should be within error bounds of the predicted value based on the previous values. Once the template of the DOA angles of the leading target is developed, it is used to predict the DOA angle tracks of the remaining targets. In order to generate the tracks for the remaining targets, a track is established if the angles correspond to the initial track values of the first target. Second the time delay between the first track and the remaining tracks are estimated at the highest correlation points between the first track and the remaining tracks. As the vehicles move at different speeds the tracks either compress or expand depending on whether a target is moving fast or slow compared to the first target. The expansion and compression ratios are estimated and used to estimate the predicted DOA angle values of the remaining targets. Based on these predicted DOA angles of the remaining targets the DOA angles obtained from the MVDR or Incoherent MUSIC will be appropriately assigned to proper tracks. Several other rules were developed to avoid mixing the tracks. The algorithm is tested on data collected at Aberdeen Proving Ground with a convoy of 3, 4 and 5 vehicles. Some of the vehicles are tracked and some are wheeled vehicles. The tracking algorithm results are found to be good. The results will be presented at the conference and in the paper.
