Hyperspectral sensors provide useful discriminants for hum-an face recognition that cannot be obtained by other imaging methods. Near-infrared spectral measurements allow the sensing of subsurface tissue structure which is significantly different from person to person but relatively stable over time. The spectral properties of human tissue are, also nearly invariant to changes in face orientation which bring significant degradation to most other face recognition algorithms. We examine the utility of using near-infrared hyperspectral images for the recognition of human subjects over a database of 200 subjects. The face recognition algorithm exploits spectral measurements for individual facial tissue types and combinations of facial tissue types. We demonstrate experimentally that hyperspectral imaging promises to support face recognition independent of facial expression and orientation.

Document structure analysis can be regarded as a syntactic analysis problem. The order and containment relations among the physical or logical components of a document page can be described by an ordered tree structure and can be modeled by a tree grammar which describes the page at the component level in terms of regions or blocks. This paper provides a detailed survey of past work on document structure analysis algorithms and summarize the limitations of past approaches. In particular, we survey past work on document physical layout representations and algorithms, document logical structure representations and algorithms, and performance evaluation of document structure analysis algorithms. In the last section, we summarize this work and point out its limitations.

Mask manufacturing for the 100 and 65nm nodes is accompanied by an increasing deployment of VSB mask writing machines. The continuous integration trend in design and broad deployment of RET have a tremendous impact on file size and pattern complexity. The impact on the total turn-around time for a design is twofold: the time to get the data ready for the hand-off to the mask writer is growing but also the time it actually takes to write the mask is heavily influenced by the size and complexity of the data. Different parameters are measures of how the flow and the particular tooling impact both portions. The efficiency of the data conversion flow conducted by a software tool can be measured by the output file size, the scalability of the computing during parallel processing on multiple processors and the total cpu-time for the transformation. The mask writing of a particular data set is affected by the file size and the shot count. The latter one is the total amount of shots that are required to expose all patterns on the mask. The shot count can be estimated based on the figure count by type and their dimensions. The results of the fracturing have an impact on the mask quality - in particular the grid size and the number and locations of small figures.

In this paper, a new 1-D hybrid Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) algorithm is developed for sequential High Range Resolution (HRR) radar signatures. The proposed hybrid algorithm combines Eigen-Template based Matched Filtering (ETMF) and Hidden Markov modeling (HMM) techniques to achieve superior HRR-ATR performance. In the proposed hybrid approach, each HRR test profile is first scored by ETMF which is then followed by independent HMM scoring. The first ETMF scoring step produces a limited number of "most likely" models that are target and aspect dependent. These reduced number of models are then used for improved HMM scoring in the second step. Finally, the individual scores of ETMF and HMM are combined using Maximal Ratio Combining to render a classification decision. Classification results are presented for the MSTAR data set via ROC curves.

We have developed path-planning techniques and tools to look for paths through minefields. Our techniques seek to balance the length and risk associated with different routes through a minefield. Our methods are intended to provide battlegroup commanders powerful new tools to evaluate alternative routes while searching for low risk paths. It is well known how to find the path of shortest distance, and well known how to find the path of least risk. However, to optimize both criteria at once is a challenging problem. We have developed and compared two methods for multicriteria path planning. We have found that the better method uses a linear combination of the criteria with a user selected risk tolerance parameter. We also describe the novel use of dynamic graph algorithms to quickly find new paths as the risk is changed due to the neutralization (deletion) of mines and the discovery (insertion) of mines. We will also describe an algorithm used to convert paths to a set of straight-line paths for ship navigation. Our tool allows a commander to find a path of acceptable length and risk, to explore the effect of eliminating mines, and to obtain a set of waypoints for minefield navigation.

Image segmentation transforms pixel-level information from raw images to a higher level of abstraction in which related pixels are grouped into disjoint spatial regions. Such regions typically correspond to natural or man-made objects or structures, natural variations in land cover, etc. For many image interpretation tasks (such as land use assessment, automatic target cueing, defining relationships between objects, etc.), segmentation can be an important early step. Remotely sensed images (e.g., multi-spectral and hyperspectral images) often contain many spectral bands (i.e., multiple layers of 2D images). Multi-band images are important because they contain more information than single-band images. Objects or natural variations that are readily apparent in certain spectral bands may be invisible in 2D broadband images. In this paper, the classical region growing approach to image segmentation is generalized from single to multi-band images. While it is widely recognized that the quality of image segmentation is affected by which segmentation algorithm is used, this paper shows that algorithm parameter values can have an even more profound effect. A novel self-calibration framework is developed for automatically selecting parameter values that produce segmentations that most closely resemble a calibration edge map (derived separately using a simple edge detector). Although the framework is generic in the sense that it can imbed any core segmentation algorithm, this paper only demonstrates self-calibration with multi-band region growing. The framework is applied to a variety of AVIRIS image blocks at different spectral resolutions, in an effort to assess the impact of spectral resolution on segmentation quality. The image segmentations are assessed quantitatively, and it is shown that segmentation quality does not generally appear to be highly correlated with spectral resolution.

The premise of image guided radiotherapy is the use of imaging to target the delivery of radiotherapy with high precision. Despite the high resolution of amorphous silicon flat panel imagers the detection of small implanted radiographic gold markers (length: 5mm, diameter: 0.8mm), visualised on portal images with low SNR and the inherent low contrast of mega-voltage photons, remains a significant, safety critical challenge. Convolution/correlation and sum of the squares of the difference (SSD) detection algorithms make use of marker templates to detect radiographic markers. However, direct convolution is not specific enough and SSD techniques fail in low SNR conditions. This report defines a robust SSD measure operating on a model template-to-clinical convolution image and a semi-empirical template self-convolution image, which is used to assign an objective measure of confidence to individual markers and unambiguously determine the separation of true and false detection distributions. The algorithm was tested on 9 clinical pelvic images produced by placing a template with 14 randomly arranged gold markers on patients during portal imaging. Using 95% confidence limits in a localised regional search for each of the 14 seeds, the number of correct detections averaged at 13, while the average number of false detections was less than 1.

Helical interpolation or weighting functions used in most multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) today are object independent. Although these algorithms have been shown to perform satisfactorily in most clinical settings, recent investigations have revealed significant image artifacts under special conditions. These artifacts are generated mainly when scanning objects with large variations at high helical pitches. In this paper, we present an adaptive interpolation approach that produces effective artifact reduction while keeping the SSP impact to a minimum. In the proposed scheme, two interpolations are performed for each projection sample. The first interpolation has the property of producing excellent SSP while the second interpolation has the property of image artifacts suppression. The projection samples generated by the two interpolation processes are then compared and a differential signal is produced. The final interpolated projection is the weighted sum of the two interpolations, with the weight being derived from a scaling function. Extensive phantom and patient studies were conducted. A thin-disc phantom experiment shows that the proposed scheme produces identical SSP as compared to the first interpolation. Experiments with phantoms and clinical studies also show that the adaptive interpolation approach produces significantly reduced image artifacts as compared to the existing algorithms.

The basis of a QoS-based routing algorithm is a dynamic network dependent cost function that is used to find the optimal or at least a feasible route across the network. However, all QoS-based routing algorithms suffer from a major drawback. The cost function at the core of the algorithms identifies segments of the network where resources are ample and exploits them to the benefit of connections that would otherwise cross a congested portion of the network. Thus, the algorithms consume more resources than Minimum Hop routing would do when the network traffic is non-stationary and heavy. QoS-based routing, thus, wastes resources and performs poorly compared with Minimum Hop routing in the event of congestion. The crux of the discussion is that whatever is gained at low or medium network loads, is offset at high network loads. What is required is a resilient algorithm that either allows the migration of a QoS-based routing algorithm to a Minimum Hop algorithm at high loads or air algorithm that merges Minimum Hop and QoS characteristics. The study opts for the latter approach and proposes and exhibits a hop constrained QoS routing algorithm that outperforms traditional QoS routing algorithms during simulation. This routing technique is based on an approximation algorithm that solves the hop constrained routing problem. The algorithm is derived from a dynamic programming FPAS scheme and finds the shortest walk for a single source destination pair in a graph with restricted number of hops when all the edge costs are non-negative. Simulated results demonstrate that routing technique based on the algorithm is robust to changes in the traffic pattern and outperforms other QoS based routing techniques under heavy load conditions.

In this paper, we present a technique for object tracking in image sequences, which makes use of an active contour framework that moves vertices of a polygon. In this approach, upon capturing boundaries of an object by a polygon from the first few frames of the image sequence, both the spatial segmentation and motion segmentation of a polygonal object can be achieved quickly by involving only the vertex locations and the adjacent edges in the computations. We carry out velocity field estimation at an active polygon vertex using the optical flow constraint on its two adjacent edges. A spatial segmentation phase follows to further refine object's vertex locations estimated by the optical flow. The advantage of our region-based active polygons over continuous active contours in object tracking in video applications is highlighted by its provision of a compact representation of object features, particularly for simply connected target shapes, hence will be essential for their tracking. Application of the method to target tracking in IR image sequences is illustrated.
