Acoustic-Seismic methods for landmine detection are under intensive investigation. Data collected by the University of Mississippi have by processed by a variety of investigators with excellent results in many cases. Increases in performance are sought based on an understanding of the physical principles leading to the differences between the vibrational velocities of soil over buried landmines and over locations not above landmines. Donskoy suggested modeling the physical system using damped harmonic oscillators. This model suggests a use of magnitude and phase information in image processing algorithms for detecting. In this paper, some methods for incorporating magnitude and phase into image processing algorithms are described and demonstrated. Previous algorithms relied on magnitude only. Increased performance is achieved by incorporating phase into the algorithms.

A comprehensive theory for time-frequency based signal detection has been developed during the past decade. The time-frequency detectors proposed in literature are linear structures operating on the time-frequency representation of the signals and are equivalent to quadratic receivers that are defined in the,time domain. In this paper, an information theoretic approach for signal detection on the time-frequency plane is introduced. In recent years, Renyi entropy has been proposed as an effective measure for quantifying signal complexity on the time-frequency plane and some important properties of this measure have been proven. In this paper, a new approach that uses the entropy functional as the test statistic for signal detection is developed. The minimum error detection algorithm is derived and the performance of this new signal detection method is demonstrated through examples.

Abrupt video edition effects (mainly called scene cuts) are transitions in which the image changes globally from one frame to the following one. The automatic detection of this set of effects is a research area widely analyzed, which has. produced a number of working technique families. Two of these families are the methods based on geometric features of the images (basically, edges and contours) and the ones based on intensity or chromaticity of the images. Feature-based techniques are highly reliable for, cut detection, but they are sometimes unfeasible due to the time spent to obtain results. Intensity-based techniques are not so accurate to detect cuts, although they work very fast. Thus a new hybrid technique is proposed. This method has been stated by combining both techniques. The intensity-based method is used to locate . "probable cuts" with a considerable speed and then the edge-based method is applied to check whether each "probable cut" actually exists or not. This way, a great time reduction is achieved with little or no loss of accuracy. Results of five well-known algorithms for automatic cut detection are shown. Besides, the results of the proposed method are given and all of them are compared, obtaining the new technique very good results.

In this paper, we introduce a novel method where several sensors and ATRs collaborate to recognize objects. Such an approach would be suitable for network centric application where the sensors and platforms can coordinate to optimize over all ATR performance. We use correlation pattern recognition techniques to facilitate the development of the concept, although other algorithms may be easily substituted. Essentially, a self-configuring network is proposed that positions the sensors optimally with respect to each other depending on the algorithm and the class of the object to be recognized. We show how such a network optimizes overall performance, and illustrate the scheme by means of examples.

Magnetic sensors are unaffected by rolling terrain, by vegetation and by weather phenomena, so provide a consistent and predictable performance. Most magnetic tracking algorithms work best for a limited span of closest approach distances between the target and any sensor array node and have specific requirements in terms of the relative node placement. Unlike demonstration fields, where the nodes are carefully manually placed, proposed field deployment methods cannot reliably achieve specific spacings. We propose a novel algorithm that is insensitive to variations in spacing, thereby eliminating the limit on closest approach distances., so that the sensor array can locally adapt the algorithm to the array configuration. This local adaptation also enables scalability for whole-array tracking.

Contacts and VIAs are features whose integrity are very susceptible to reticle CD defects or in general, to defects that produce a change of total energy (flux) projected through the reticle. As lithography is extended beyond the 130nm node, the problem becomes more critical. Detecting and analyzing photomask critical dimension (CD) errors and semitransparent defects is vital for qualifying reticles to enable high IC wafer yield for the 90nm node. The current state of the art inspection methods are unable to meet the industry requirements for contact and via features. Using the TeraStar(TM) pattern inspection system's image computer platform, a new algorithm, TeraFlux(TM), has been implemented and tested for the inspection of small "closed" features. The algorithm compares the transmitted energy flux difference between a test contact (or a group of contacts) and a reference image for small closed features, such as, contacts, trenches, and cells on chrome and half-tone reticles. The algorithm is applicable to both clear and dark field reticles. Sensitivity characterization tests show that the new algorithm provides CD error detection to 6% energy flux variation with low false defect counts. We performed experiments to correlate the sensitivity performance of the new algorithm with wafer printability results. The results will be presented together with results of inspections results of programmed defect plates and production reticles.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a class of generalized parametric Slant-Hadamard transform of order (N = k(n), n = 2, 3,...) where k is an arbitrary integer and to present its fast algorithm. As special cases of this class are the classical Slant-Hadamard (k = 2 and beta(N) = 1), the generalized Slant-Hadamard beta(N) = 1), and the parametric Slant-Hadamard (k = 2) transforms. We will show that the parametric Slant-Hadamard transform is slightly superior to the DCT for compression of the geometric test images at a particular quantization matrix scaling factors.

A study was conducted on the use of morphological processing for detection in Uncooled Infra Red (UCIR) data using the Clutter type 1 and Clutter type 2 databases. The CMO algorithm was used with various modifications. A fixed minimum peak value was used rather than a fraction of the maximum peak per image. This is much more realistic, since many real scenes will not contain targets. One-dimensional directional structuring elements (SEs) were used for the Close Minus Open algorithm. We used the range of gray levels within the output blob peaks (blob analysis) and larger windows in peak sorting to reduce false alarms. A new dilation minus erosion morphological algorithm gave the best result.

We examine the performance of illumination-invariant face recognition in hyperspectral images on A database of 200 subjects. The images are acquired over the near-infrared spectral range of 0.7-1.0 microns. Each subject is imaged over a range of facial orientations and expressions. Faces are represented by local spectral information for several tissue types. Illumination variation is modeled by low-dimensional linear subspaces of reflected radiance spectra. One hundred outdoor illumination spectra measured at Boulder, Colorado are used to synthesize the radiance spectra for the face tissue types. Weighted invariant subspace projection over multiple tissue types is used for recognition. Illumination-invariant face recognition is tested for various face rotations as well as different facial expressions.

Precise density measurement of pulmonary nodules with CT is an important prerequisite if the measurement of contrast enhancement is to be used to assess if a nodule is benign or malignant. The precision of a volume-based 3D measurement method was compared to the standard 2D method currently used in clinical practice. Two consecutive low-dose CT scans (inter-scan delay a few minutes) were obtained from 10 patients with 75 pulmonary nodules (size 5 - 32 mm). A four-slice CT was used (Siemens Somatom VZ, collimation 4 x 1 mm, normalized pitch 1.75, slice thickness 1.25 mm, reconstruction interval 0.8 mm). Mean density of each nodule was determined independently from both scans with two methods: 1) an automatic 3D segmentation method;2) the standard 2D method as proposed in the literature and currently used in clinical practice, (3 mm slice thickness, oval region of interest). ROC analysis was used to compare these methods for the detection of an enhancement of 10, 30 and 50 Hounsfield units (HU). The mean absolute measurement error (+/-standard deviation) was 9.9 HU (+/-14.4 HU) for the 3D method and 26.4 HU (+/-42.0 HU) for the 2D method. ROC analysis yielded A(Z) values of 0.723 / 0.932 / 0.982 for the 3D method and 0.609 / 0.773 / 0.850 for the 2D method for the detection of 10 / 30 / 50 HU enhancement respectively. Volume-based density determination has a significantly higher reproducibility than the currently used 2D ROI approach and should preferentially be used for enhancement measurements in pulmonary nodules.
