Hyperspectral imaging has proved to be a valuable tool for performing material based discrimination of targets in highly cluttered backgrounds. A next step for utilizing this technology is to integrate spectral and spatial discrimination algorithms for Autonomous Target Recognition (ATR) applications. This paper describes a hardware and software testbed system for performing spectral/spatial ATR and presents initial results from afield test in the Anza-Borrego desert.

The Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) is an effective way to analyze nonstationary signals and to localize and characterize singularities. Fast algorithms have already been developed to compute the CWT at integer time points and dyadic or integer scales. We propose here a new method that is based on a B-spline expansion of both the signal and the analysis wavelet and that allows the CWT computation at arbitrary scales. Its complexity is O(N), where N represents the size of the input signal;in other words, the cost is independent of the scale factor. Moreover;the algorithm lends itself well to a parallel implementation.

Texture as a surface representation is the subject of a wide body of computer vision and computer graphics literature. While texture is always associated with a form of repetition in the image, the repeating quantity may vary. The texture may be a color or albedo variation as in a checkerboard, a paisley print or zebra stripes. Very often in real-world scenes, texture is instead due to a surface height variation, e.g. pebbles, gravel, foliage and any rough surface. Such surfaces are referred to here as 3D textured surfaces. Standard texture recognition algorithms are not appropriate for 3D textured surfaces because the appearance of these surfaces changes in a complex manner with viewing direction and illumination direction. Recent methods have been developed for recognition of 3D textured surfaces using a database of surfaces observed under varied imaging parameters. One of these methods is based on 3D textons obtained using K-means clustering of multiscale feature vectors. Another method uses eigen-analysis originally developed for appearance-based object recognition. In this work we develop a hybrid approach that employs both feature grouping and dimensionality reduction. The method is tested using the Columbia-Utrecht texture database (CUReT) and provides excellent recognition rates. The method is compared with existing recognition methods for 3D textured surfaces. A direct comparison is facilitated by empirical recognition rates from the same texture data set. The current method has key advantages over existing methods including requiring less prior information on both the training and novel images.

Recognition of license plate images is the topic of this paper. The major issue in this problem is the accurate extraction of the license plate character string from varying backgrounds using processing techniques that are reasonably fast. The images are also characterized by nan-uniform illumination. Recognition of the string is relatively straightforward, if the extraction process has been correctly designed. The authors present three different approaches to extraction and their study revealed that the combination of gray-scale morphology with a log gray-scale transform provided accurate extraction of the string. Recognition studies with 700 images captured during day and night periods indicated an overall acceptance rate of nearly 90% with .7% confusion.

Automatic shot boundary detection has been an active research area for nearly a decade and has led to high performance detection algorithms for hard cuts, fades and wipes. Reliable dissolve detection, however, is still an unsolved problem. In this paper we present the first robust and reliable dissolve detection system. A detection rate of 69% was achieved while reducing the false alarm rate to an acceptable level of 68% on a test video set for which so far the best reported detection and false alarm rare had been 57% and 185%, respectively! In addition, the temporal extent of the dissolves are estimated by a multi-resolution detection approach. The three core ideas of our novel approach are firstly the creation of a dissolve synthesizer capable of creating in principle an infinite number of dissolve examples of any duration from a video database of raw video footage, secondly two new features for capturing the characteristics of dissolves, and thirdly, the exploitation of machine learning ideas for reliable object detection such as the bootstrap-method to improve the set of non-dissolve examples and the search at multiple resolutions as well as the usage of machine learning algorithms such as neural networks, support-vector machines and linear vector quantizer.

Throughout the history of aviation, air vehicles have been developed for military applications in a number of roles, especially the use of weapons to attack targets on the ground and in the air. The complex dynamics of weapons aiming and employment from air vehicles has driven the design of a wide variety of specialized software and operator interfaces. The task of weapons employment in an air vehicle is particularly challenging when the target is itself an air vehicle. This paper examines specialized implementations in cockpit display symbology for weapons employment of modem air-to-air missiles.

Interband coregistration of multispectral satellite imagery is essential to exploiting the spectral information inherent in these data. A semi-automatic image registration method has been developed for Multispectral Thermal Imager (MTI) data. This registration method, based on feature fitting within the image, is applicable to the 14 MTI spectral bands that contain ground information;these spectral bands range from 0.45 to 10.7 mum. The feature fitting registration method requires selection of an appropriate scene feature in the image, usually a crossroad or other feature with moderately high contrast to compute the required shift in x and y for each band. This paper describes the algorithm and provides examples of images registered using this method. Preliminary results show that for MTI image registration, feature fitting yields better results than crosscorrelation. Results also show that this algorithm works well for a broad variety of scenes;this algorithm has been applied to images with scene content ranging from desert images with very little structure to heavily forested images. This method has been developed in support of the MTI mission, but may easily be extended for use on image data collected by other multispectral sensors.

A spatial light modulator can be used to actively illuminate moving objects with spot patterns. This research studies the spot patterns designed to detect and track object motion. To enhance the detection and tracking process, a system supervisor dynamically updates each successive spot pattern. The spot patterns are implemented by pseudo-randomly encoding their frequency plane into a phase-only filter to be implemented on a 128x128 Boulder Nonlinear System's LCD device. The modification of the spot patterns are based on the change of reflected intensity from one frame to the next. detection, tracking, encoding and supervisor design and methodology are presented.

A method for the passive remote monitoring of chemical vapors by differential FTIR radiometry is explored. This approach is based on the use of a double-beam Fourier transform infrared spectrometer optimized for optical subtraction. The method is described with a particular emphasis on its capabilities for differential detection and background suppression. The algorithm developed for on-line detection and quantization of chemical vapor plume is presented and tested. The method has been successfully used to map the integrated path-concentration of a vapor plume of ammonia.

Recognizing targets in infra-red (IR) images has been a long-standing and challenging problem. In this paper we outline a combination of detection methods based on optimized feature discrimination and correlation based classification techniques that demonstrate an improvement ability to separate target from clutter. Preliminary results are shown on a small subset of data obtained from NVESD to illustrate the possible performance gains.
