We present a generic approach that identifies and differentiates among signals for wide range of problems. Originally our algorithm was developed to detect the presence of a specific vehicle belonging to a certain class via the analysis of the acoustic signals emitted while it is moving. A crucial factor in having a successful detection (no false alarm) is to construct signatures built from characteristic features that enable to discriminate between the class of interest and the residual information such as background. We construct the signatures of certain classes by the distribution of the energies among blocks which consist of wavelet packet coefficients. We developed an efficient procedure for adaptive selection of the characteristic blocks. We modified the CART algorithm in order to utilize it to be a decision unit in our scheme. However, this technology, which has many algorithmic variations, can be used to solve a wide range of classification and detection problems which are based on acoustic processing and, more generally, for classification and detection of signals which have near-periodic structure. We present results of successful application of the properly modified algorithm to detection of early symptoms of arterial hypertension in children via real-time analysis of pulse signals.

Most of the real world engineering problems are imprecise and they carry a certain degree of fuzziness in the description of their nature. Fuzzy logic is a design methodology that can be used to solve real life problems. It has the advantage of lower development costs, superior features, and better end product performance. Fuzzy logic makes it possible to describe complex systems using expert experience and knowledge in English-like rules, which are easy to learn and use, even by non-experts. Fuzzy technique does not require system modeling or complex mathematical equations. The design methodology is to first understand and characterize the system behavior by using our basic knowledge and experience and then design the algorithm using the fuzzy rules that describe the relationship between its input and output. This is done by debugging the design through simulations and if the performance is not satisfactory we only need to modify or add some fuzzy rules. There exists considerable literature on target tracking based on the Kalman filtering and probabilistic data association (PDA) techniques. A few these techniques can yield acceptable results in a high-density clutter environment due to the complexity of combined target and measurement to track association or due to the simplification assumed in these techniques. This paper presents the use of fuzzy association rules involved in data association of target measurements under a high-density clutter. The fuzzy tracker is used to track a target and its performance is compared with a standard PDA filter for various signal-to-noise ratios (SNR).

Time-domain and frequency-domain spreading algorithms are presented in this paper. However, detection algorithm does not rely on correlation method, but based on patchwork method. Time-domain algorithm can survive translation and clipping attacks. Frequency-domain algorithm is robust against compression attack. Embedding and detection functions are presented. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the algorithms.

In this paper, we will discuss a novel technology, which we have recently developed for automatic target detection and recognition by polarimetric imaging systems. This technology consists of an approach to non-cooperative small target detection that uses statistical techniques to exploit a target's Stokes vector infrared signature. This is applicable to sensors whose signature measurements are sensitive to the polarization of the targets and their backgrounds. Fusion is achieved by constructing the joint statistical measures for the target's polarization states. Target polarization states are in terms of the intensity, percent of linear polarization, and the angle of polarization plane. Applications of the proposed approach, for military targets under variations in target geometry are made in terms of receiver operating characteristic condition curves. The new results, which have been obtained on data from the Air Force's IRMA polarimetric infrared simulation tool, indicate the usefulness of polarimetric infrared signatures for the automatic detection of small targets.

We present a novel approximate image reconstruction technique for helical cone-beam CT, called the Advanced Multiple Plane Reconstruction (AMPR). The method is an extension of the ASSR algorithm presented in Medical Physics vol. 27, no. 4, 2000 by Kachehiess et al. In the ASSR, the pitch is fixed to a certain value and dose usage is not optimum. These limitations have been overcome in the AMPR algorithm by reconstructing several image planes from any given half scan range of projection angles. The image planes are tilted in two orientations so as to optimally use the data available on the detector. After reconstruction of several sets of tilted images, a subsequent interpolation step reformats the oblique image planes to a set of voxels sampled on a cartesian grid. Using our novel approach on a scanner with 16 slices, we can achieve image quality superior to what is currently a standard for four-slice scanners. Dose usage in the order of 95% for all pitch values can be achieved. We present simulations of semiantropomorphic phantoms using a standard CT scanner geometry and a 16 slice design.

Phase shifting mask technology will be necessary to produce integrated circuits at the 130 nm node using KrF wavelength steppers. in order to successfully accomplish this goal, it is necessary to detect and repair phase shifting defects that may occur in the manufacture of these reticles. An inspection algorithm has been developed to improve the phase shift defect detection rate of an UV reticle inspection system and is based upon the simultaneous use of the transmitted and reflected light signals. This paper describes the phase defect sensitivity improvement over transmitted light only pattern inspection results and simultaneous transmitted and reflected light based contamination inspection results.

An algorithm is developed in the companion paper [I], to update the existing Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) to represent the new data series that results when a new signal point is received. Updating the DFT in this way uses less computation than directly evaluating the DFT using the FFT algorithm. This reduces the computational order by a factor of log2 N. The algorithm is able to work in the presence of data window function, for use with rectangular window, the split triangular, Hanning, Hamming, and Blackman windows. In this paper, a hardware implementation of this algorithm, using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology, is outlined. Unlike traditional fully customized VLSI circuits, FPGAs represent a technical break through in the corresponding industry. The FPGA implements thousands of gates of logic in a single Integrated Circuit (IC) chip and it can be programmed by users at their site in a few seconds or less depending on the type of device used. The risk is low and the development time is short. The advantages have made FPGAs very popular for rapid prototyping of algorithms in the area of digital communication, digital signal processing, and image processing. Our paper addresses the related issues of implementation using hardware descriptive language in the development of the design and the subsequent downloading on the programmable hardware chip.

Based on the development of an IR seeker in 1992 and its extensive captive flight testing, the seeker of the trilateral (Germany, France, Italy) Polyphem missile was developed and tested in captive and free flights. It is based on a 640x486 element FPA and a cardanic stabilization and pointing system with an on-gimbal rate gyro. The digitized output of the FPA is sent to the ground via an optical fiber where it is observed by the operator and processed for cueing of targets and tracking for the final approach. After general seeker design considerations its design and performance and an in-flight video of a live firing will be presented. On the basis of the prior development of an IR seeker module set consisting of a 256x256 element InSb FPA and its electronics, the seeker for the German KEPD350 missile has been in development since 1997. Recently it has been qualified successfully and 25 of it will be delivered in 2001. Its mechanics consist of a miniaturized cardanic system which uses the data of the missile's Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) for strap-down pointing and stabilization. Its image processor is designed for navigation during cruise and for tracking of the target in final approach. The seeker's features and performance will be presented.

Multiple-sensor data fusion is becoming increasingly important among the defence community as technology evolves. The use of multiple-sensor information reduces the ambiguity and presents the operator with an enhanced tactical picture of the surveillance volume. The crucial step in the fusion process is the data association of the information received from the sensors. If the associations are made incorrectly then the fused data could potentially give rise to estimates that might be worse than those of a single sensor. In this paper, we explore the problem of associating Electronic Support Measure (ESM) tracks with one or more possible radar tracks. We examine the performance of different track-to-track data association algorithms through simulations, which is based on the Probability of False Association (P-fa) and Probability of Correct (P-c) association.
