The authors have recently introduced a novel imaging algorithm which. they call the Elliptic Systems Method (ESM). The performance of the ESM for experimental data using only one source and seven detectors is discussed in this paper. Two cases are considered: one in which the background medium is known, and one in which there is an error of 30%.

Intelligent processing techniques are applied to a Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) application, focused on classifying the objects in a typical threat complex, using fused IR and Ladar sensors. These techniques indicate the potential to improve designation robustness against ''off-normal''/unexpected conditions, or when sensor data or classifier performance degrades. A Fused Sensor Discrimination (FuSeD) simulation testbed was assembled for designation experiments, to evaluate test and simulation data, assess intelligent processor and classification algorithms, and evaluate sensor performance. Results were produced for a variety of neural net and other nonlinear classifiers, yielding high designation performance and low false alarm rates. Most classifiers yield a few percent in false alarm rate: rates are further improved when multiple techniques are applied via a Majority Based Fusion technique. Example signatures, features, classifier descriptions, intelligent controller design, and architecture ate included. Work was performed for the Discriminating Interceptor Technology Program (DITP).

The impact of background lumiphore in luminescence optical tomography is examined. To demonstrate its effects, numerical simulations were performed to calculate the diffusion-regime limiting form of forward-problem solutions for a specific test medium. Image reconstructions were performed using a CGD algorithm with a rescaling technique and positivity constraints. In addition, we develop a modification to the basic algorithm that makes use of the maximum possible concentration in order to estimate the background concentration, and show that it improves Image quality when background luniphore is present. We conclude that the usual measure of background lumiphore's effect which is the target-to-background lumiphore concentration ratio, is not adequate to define the contribution from the background lumiphore. The reason for this is that image quality is also a function of target-size and location. An alternative measure that we find superior is described. The results indicate that the improved algorithm yields better image quality for low target-to-background ratios.

The purpose of this study is to propose and study algorithms for off-line trend monitoring and change-point detection for calibration coefficient data streams. This type of algorithm is suitable for monitoring different sensors e.g. AVHRR, ETM+ and MODIS. Based on these algorithms we can produce flags for the instruments indicating normal and abnormal behavior. These algorithms can also help to discover trends and features in the calibration data. Some of these algorithms will be used by the Landsat-7 ETM+ Image Assessment System and the EOS AM1 MODIS calibration system for modeling the gain behavior of the instruments over time. Mathematically we used quadratic splines and statistical concepts for building incremental models.

Many Automatic target recognition systems work by matching test profiles against profile templates from various parts of the targets. These templates are generally constructed for uniform-width sub-targets constructed out of the targets being considered. In this paper we present a heuristic search based algorithm for constructing optimal-sized sub-targets which mag. be of varying widths. We show the improvements that are obtained by constructing templates for sub-targets identified by the search algorithm. The reduction in Mean Square errors is reported and also the performance of two classification test runs.

The celebration of the Centenary of Cinema in 1995 was the occasion to initiate new developments for the preservation of the international cinematic heritage and the restoration of old damaged films. 'Classical' film restoration is based on special printing machines to improve the duality of (safekeeping-) copies. Only a small class of artifacts can be removed with such a process because the unit of manipulation is always a whole image sequence. With the help of digital image processing techniques the restoration process can be adapted for each frame or even pixel. This creates new potentialities for the restoration of films beyond repair, especially nitrate based films produced before 1954 and early color films. This paper presents a short overview about a system for the digital restoration of image sequences, currently under development in the EUREKA project LIMELIGHT. After an introduction to the technical objectives and key figures, the restoration process (acquisition, sequence management. image processing, restitution) is described for the case of 35mm film. algorithms for the detection of artifacts, such as dust? image vibrations, scratches, (partially) distorted frames and brightness variations, based on a morphological detector, which uses spatial properties-and a dynamic detector, based on motion analysis, are presented. Furthermore an algorithm for 3D image interpolation used for the removal of scratches and subtitles is described. The main problem is the reconstruction of the missing image content for more than one frame in the same spatial location. Application examples for each defect class are given.

Determination of vehicle origins and destinations have long been a goal and a tool for traffic planners. Recently there has been an increase in the use of machine vision systems (automatic license plate readers) for determining origins and destinations. The original work in this area involved recording traffic on s-video compatible tape formats (e.g. s-VHS and Hi-8mm). Recently the use of real time analysis of traffic flows has been implemented. This paper describes the implementation of a system to acquire license plate information on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, in Washington state. The paper describes the system installation, the system architecture, the data handling and mail outs and some preliminary results.

This paper presents new results on the tracking of ballistic missiles warheads using spatio-temporal wavelets. Here we focus our attention on handling more general classes of motion, such as acceleration To accomplish this task the spatio-temporal wavelet transform is adapted to the motion parameters on a frame-by-frame basis. Three different energy densities, associated with velocity, location, and size, have been defined to determine motion parameters. We pointed out that maximizing these energy densities is equivalent to a minimum squared error estimation. tracking results on synthethically generated image sequences demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed algorithm.

Samples of erythrocyte suspensions of normal and pathological blood were studied by light backscattering technique. This method allows to register the kinetics of the formation of erythrocyte aggregates in stasis and the disruption of large and small aggregates in shear flow of aggregated blood in a Couette chamber. The output signal proportional to backscattered light intensity was processed by different algorithms to quantitatively determine the aggregational properties of erythrocytes. We suggest that the registered time dependence of the signal representing the aggregation kinetics can be approximated as a sum of exponentials with parameters T-1 and T-2 that reflect the characteristic times of linear and clump or network aggregates formation respectively. On the other hand the hyperbolic approximation of the aggregation kinetics enables to determine the characteristic constant of the whole aggregation process. We show that the parameters obtained with both exponential and hyperbolic data processing algorithms are sensitive to the concentration of erythrocytes in blood sample, mode of scattered light detection and other factors. The advantages of each algorithm and latest results of their comparative analysis will be discussed in this paper.
