The tristimulus analysis was applied in differential pulse voltammetry experiments to detect and distinguish two substances using a set of three sensors that respond to both substances, aiming at the development of an additional tool to overcome the absence of specificity of the sensor to a single chemical species. The sensors are based on carbon nanostructures (graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide modified with antimony nanoparticles) and are applied to estriol and estradiol detection in water, which constitutes an environmental problem. We show that apart from substance identification, the method can be used to quantify the relative concentration of the substances in a solution.

In this paper, we explore different techniques for lossless compression of sensor data on a wireless sensor network. In this work, we applied modify differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) scheme for our baseline lossless compression. These techniques were applied on sensor types with reasonably predictable data pattern (e.g., temperature sensor, pressure sensor, etc.) allowing about 50% data compression on the original samples. In addition, we propose a new adaptive data compression algorithm based on DPCM for higher compression of sensor data. Furthermore, this work proposes a new mathematical model based on Markov model to show where the proposed algorithm is beneficial over the conventional DPCM methods.

The ITU-T Recommendation G.722 about subband adaptive differential pulse code modulation (SB-ADPCM) is the mandatory wideband speech codec in the new generation digital enhanced cordless telephony (NG-DECT). Although in ADPCM the difference signal instead of the original signal is quantized and adaptive prediction is employed, redundancy is yet observed within the quantized samples. In this paper we apply a soft-decision speech decoding technique which exploits this redundancy in terms of a priori knowledge and the channel reliability information to NG-DECT. In that way, we propose a novel scheme in a standard-compliant fashion which improves the robustness of the decoder. The performance of our proposal is evaluated in terms of speech quality and a noticeable improvement over the standard codec and its own packet loss concealment algorithm is observed.

Block Compressed Sensed (BCS) images reconstructed by the Smoothed Projected Landweber (SPL) equations are severely degraded in visual quality. This work focuses on removal of the noise present in the BCS - SPL reconstructed image. For noise removal the nature of the noise is studied first. A suitable frequency domain filter to mitigate this noise is proposed in this work. differential pulse coded modulation after coupling with Blocked Compress Sensing and the proposed filtering shows significant improvement in the result compared to many other similar techniques where generally smoothing filters or no filters are used. Along with differential pulse coded modulation, this work proposes the use of Lempel-Ziv-Welch channel coding technique for further compression of data. Significant compression is achieved for medical images compared to other channel coding techniques by the incorporation of LZW.

As data centers evolve to sustain the economic scale in network traffic, optical interconnections are adapted to support the vast amount of capacity requirements. Among emerging solutions is the incorporation of digital-signal-processing (DSP) functionalities at the receiver to compensate for the optical fiber and optoelectronic components impairments. The bottleneck in such architecture is often implementing a high-resolution and high-speed analog-to-digital-converter (ADC) device, which usually leads to massive power consumption and high costs. In this paper, we propose novel transmission schemes based on low-resolution ADCs, termed DSP-enhanced analog-to-digital conversion. The proposed methods are based on the mathematical principle of predictive quantization, combined with linear equalization theory. Mathematical analysis and performance bounds associated with common channel impairments are derived. Simulation results demonstrate that the DSP-enhanced ADC provides a significant signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) gain and, subsequently, may enable heavy digital compensation with reduced-resolution ADCs.

The generation of screen content (SC) videos has considerably increased with the popularity of multimedia applications such as video conferencing, remote desktop sharing and remote education. SC videos, as opposed to natural video sequences, are challenging to compress due to the high number of sharp edges. This paper proposes the sample-based angular prediction with median and edge prediction (SAP-ME), a novel intra-prediction method for lossless coding of SC videos. SAP-ME incorporates the advantages of three types of sample-wise intra-prediction;namely, DPCM-based angular intra-prediction, median prediction and edge prediction. By using rate distortion optimization, SAP-ME selects among these three types of predictions to accurately predict directional patterns, smooth regions and sharp edges, with a low computational complexity. Evaluation results on a variety of SC videos show that SAP-ME attains average bit-rate reductions of 16.13% over current HEVC intra-prediction coding for lossless coding.

Compressed Sensing (CS) allows images to be reconstructed from fewer measurements compared to that proposed by Nyquist. To reduce the computational expense, instead of applying CS to the entire image, it is judicious if CS were applied in blocks. Sensing an image block by block not only requires lesser memory but also eases the computational burden during reconstruction. Although a large amount of work has been done in integrating CS and OFDM, empirical analysis of BCS in conjugation with OFDM has not been done so far. This work senses an image using Block Compressed Sensing (BCS), encodes it using DPCM and transmits it in the OFDM framework. Among the reconstruction algorithms OMP and SPL, this paper attempts to come up with the superior algorithm after performing a detailed comparison by varying block sizes, sub-sampling rates per block and the AWGN channel SNR. The necessity of the OFDM scheme for practical deployment has also been re-asserted strongly.

Piecewise DC prediction in HEVC

In this paper, we propose an improved DC prediction method for high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) intra coding. The technique involves the application of pixel-wise predictors rather than block-based predictor in the DC mode. In HEVC, the pixels of neighboring reconstructed blocks are used to support multiple directional spatial prediction modes and reduce spatial redundancy. For lossless coding, pixel-by-pixel differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) is applied to directional predictions. Consequently, residuals are reduced and coding efficiency is improved. Since DC prediction still employs block-based coding, pixel-wise DC prediction is needed for better coding efficiency. When compared to HEVC lossless intra coding, the proposed algorithm reduces the bit rate by 5.95%. Furthermore, with pixel-by-pixel DPCM, the average bit rate reduction is 10.64% when compared to HEVC lossless intra coding. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
