In this paper we consider the problem of designing coding and decoding schemes to estimate the state of a scalar stable stochastic linear system in the presence of a wireless communication channel between the sensor and the estimator. In particular, we consider a communication channel which is prone to packet loss and includes quantization noise due to its limited capacity. We study two scenarios: the first with channel feedback and the second with no channel feedback. More specifically, in the first scenario the transmitter is aware of the quantization noise and the packet loss history of the channel, while in the second scenario the transmitter is aware of the quantization noise only. We show that in the first scenario, the optimal strategy among all possible linear encoders corresponds to the transmission of the Kalman filter innovation similarly to the differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM). In the second scenario, we show that there is a critical packet loss probability above which it is better to transmit the state rather than the innovation. We also propose a heuristic strategy based on the transmission of a convex combination of the state and the Kalman filter innovation which is shown to provide a performance close to the one obtained with channel feedback.

We recently introduced a new focal plane image compression algorithm that is implemented with 607 transistors inside every 4×4 pixel block of a CMOS imager, using conventional 0 35μm integration technology. This work focuses on preliminary results concerning the overall MTF of an imaging system in which the CMOS imager features focal-plane data compression based on DPCM and VQ with an overall bit rate below 0.94 bpp. Using bar-target pattern inputs, it is shown that details up to 2 cycles/cm are preserved in the decoded images. antonio@***

differential pulse-code modulation is coupled with uniform scalar quantization to provide block-based quantized compressed sensing of images. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvement in rate-distortion performance as compared scalar quantization used alone in several block-based compressed-sensing reconstruction algorithms. Additionally, rate-distortion performance superior to that of alternative quantized-compressed-sensing techniques relying on optimized quantization or reconstruction is observed.

Medical images include information about human body which are used for different purposes such as surgical and diagnostic plans. Compression of medical images is used in some applications such as profiling patient's data and transmission systems. Regard to importance of medical images information, lossless or near-lossless compression is preferred. Lossless JPEG, JPEG-LS and lossless version of JPEG2000 are few well-known methods for lossless compression. JPEG2000 is one of the latest and provides good compression ratio, however, it is complex [1]. In real time application which needs hardware implementation, low complex algorithm accelerates compression process. In this paper, a lossless and near-lossless compression method is introduced which is efficient due to its high compression ratio and simplicity. The method is consists of a new transformation method called Enhanced DPCM Transformation (EDT) which has a good energy compaction and a suitable Huffman encoding. After introducing the compression method, it is applied on different test cases and the results are evaluated.

Predictive coding eliminates redundancy due to correlations between the current and past signal samples, so that only the innovation, or prediction residual, needs to be encoded. However, the decoder may, in principle, also exploit correlations with future samples. Prior decoder enhancement work mainly applied a non-causal filter to smooth the regular decoder reconstruction. In this work we broaden the scope to pose the problem: Given an allowed decoding delay, what is the optimal decoding algorithm for predictively encoded sources? To exploit all information available to the decoder, the proposed algorithm recursively estimates conditional probability densities, given both past and available future information, and computes the optimal reconstruction via conditional expectation. We further derive a near-optimal low complexity approximation to the optimal decoder, which employs a time-invariant lookup table or codebook approach. Simulations indicate that the latter method closely approximates the optimal delayed decoder, and that both considerably outperform the competition.

In this paper, two general algorithms for the automatic generation of instruction-set extensions are presented. The basic instruction set of a reconfigurable architecture is specialized with new application-specific instructions. The paper proposes two methods for the generation of convex multiple input multiple output instructions, under hardware resource constraints, based on a two-step clustering process. Initially, the application is partitioned in single-output instructions of variable size and then, selected clusters are combined in convex multiple output clusters following different policies. Our results on well-known kernels show that the extended instructions-set allows to execute applications more efficiently and needing fewer cycles. Our results show that a significant overall application speed-up is achieved even for large kernels (for ADPCM decoder the speed-up is up to x2.2 and for TWOFISH encoder the speedup is up to x5.5).

This paper presents novel results on perfect reconstruction feedback quantizers (PRFQs), i.e., noise-shaping, predictive and sigma-delta A/D converters whose signal transfer function is unity. Our analysis of this class of converters is based upon an additive white noise model of quantization errors. Our key result is a formula that relates the minimum achievable MSE of such converters to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the scalar quantizer embedded in the feedback loop. This result allows us to obtain analytical expressions that characterize the corresponding optimal filters. We also show that, for a fixed SNR of the scalar quantizer, the end-to-end MSE of an optimal PRFQ which uses the optimal filters (which for this case turn out to be IIR) decreases exponentially with increasing oversampling ratio. Key departures from earlier work include the fact that fed back quantization noise is explicitly taken into account and that the order of the converter filters is not a priori restricted.

We present the results of numerical modeling of a coupled cavity traveling wave tube (TWT) amplifier based on the non-stationary discrete theory of excitation of a periodic waveguide [1]. The code developed is applicable for solution of various practical problems, including simulation of amplification of multi-frequency signals, self-modulation and chaos generation, parasitic self-excitation of amplifiers, and short pulses amplification or generation.

Hybrid Wyner-Ziv coders which employ a combination of Wyner-Ziv coding and differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) encoding have recently gained popularity for applications such as video coding. In this paper we analyze the low-rate operational rate distortion performance of Wyner-Ziv coding using uniform scalar quantization, in the context of such hybrid coders. Motivated by video we consider the compression of a first-order Laplace-Markov source, and derive approximate analytical rate and distortion expressions which are accurate at low rates. We utilize the derived analytical expressions to address the problem of determining the optimal quantization interval ratio of the Wyner-Ziv and DPCM scalar quantizers, for a range of rates.

Self-modulation instability is typical for special distributed oscillators especially with time delayed feedback. This instability results in generation of multiple frequencies or even spread spectrum chaotic signal. In this paper, we propose a method for suppressing the self-modulation that is a modification of the well-known time-delayed controlling chaos technique. Numerical results for delayed feedback klystron and traveling-wave tube oscillators are presented showing that application of the method allows stabilization of unstable single frequency regimes and improves performance of the oscillators.
