In this paper, a simple and efficient nature inspired search method based on differential search algorithm (DSA) has been presented and used for optimal power flow (OPF) problem in power systems. By using the proposed DSA method, the power system parameters such as real power generations, bus voltages, load tap changer ratios and shunt capacitance values are optimized for the certain objective functions. Different types of single-objective and multi-objective functions on IEEE 9-bus, IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus power systems are used to test and verify the efficiency of the proposed DSA method. By comparing with several optimization methods, the results obtained by using the proposed DSA method are presented in detail. The results achieved in this work illustrate that the DSA method can successfully be used to solve the non-linear and non-convex problems related to power systems. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. This article proposes a differential search algorithm to solve a distribution system reliability optimization problem. Optimum failure rate and repair time of different distributor segments of a distribution network have been calculated to enhance reliability of radial distribution system, both without distributed generation and incorporating distributed generation as standby unit. The differential search algorithm, a recently developed optimization algorithm having improved exploration and exploitation ability, has been implemented to solve the reliability optimization problem in search for superior quality solution. The differential search algorithm mimics the Brownian-like random-walk movement used by an organism for its migration. Simulation results establish that the proposed approach outperforms other existing optimization techniques in terms of quality of solution obtained and computational efficiency as applied to optimize failure rate and repair time of a radial distribution network.

There are many meta-heuristic algorithms proposed by researchers, and the general feature of these algorithms is that they are modeled by being inspired by the intelligent behaviors of living things in nature, individually or as a group. Basic versions of meta-heuristic algorithms are frequently introduced to solve continuous optimization problems. However, due to their flexibility, they can be adjusted for use in various types of optimization problems. In this research, an improved version of the differential search algorithm (DSAX), which is a population-based meta-heuristic algorithm that has shown its success in solving optimization problems, is proposed to use in solving binary optimization problems. The DSAX has been tested on large-scale binary optimization problems. Moreover, it is compared with the XOR-Based version of the Tree-Seed algorithm, which is well known in the literature. According to the obtained results and the comparisons, it is seen that the DSAX algorithm proposed in this study is superior.

In this paper, a novel differential search algorithm (DSA) approach is proposed to solve multiobjective optimization problems, called Multiobjective differential search algorithm (MODSA). MODSA utilizes the concept of Pareto dominance to determine the direction of a super-organism and it maintains non-dominated solutions in the external repository. This approach also uses the external repository of super-organisms that is used to guide other super-organisms. It guides the artificial organisms to search towards non-crowding and external regions of Pareto front. The performance of proposed approach is evaluated against the other well-known multiobjective optimization algorithms over a set of multiobjective benchmark test functions. Experimental results reveal that the MODSA outperforms the other competitive algorithms for benchmark test functions. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Xylitol is one of the bio-based chemical products that received well recognition and highly demanded from both food and pharmaceutical industries which led to various experiment to be carried out on various organism to produce xylitol. Recently, E. coli has become the spotlight to be one of the organisms that can be metabolically engineered to produce xylitol by using gene knockout strategy. However, gene knockout strategy required laborious, expensive and time-consuming when conducted in vivo. Motivated by this, in silico experiment has been done to simulate and manipulate the model of E. coli to construct a new E. coli model that will focus on producing xylitol by using Flux Balance Analysis (FBA). In this paper, a new hybrid method called DNNDSA is proposed which consists of both Deep Neural Network (DNN) method and differential search algorithm (DSA) to do the predictive analysis on a newly constructed model of E. coli to predict which gene knockout condition is the best to be applied in metabolic pathway of E. coli to improve the xylitol production.

In this paper, a new method has been presented for the extraction of edge information by using differential search Optimization algorithm. The proposed method is based on using a new heuristic image thresholding method for edge detection. The success of the proposed method has been examined on fusion of two remote sensed images. The applicability of the proposed method on edge detection and image fusion problems have been analysed in detail and the empirical results exposed that the proposed method is useful for solving the mentioned problems.

Interpretation of volcanic magnetic anomalies using differential search algorithm: case study from the Kula volcanic park, western Turkiye

A differential search algorithm (DSA) application, which is a metaheuristic inspired by nature, for total field aeromagnetic data caused by volcanoes over a 2D dipping dyke is presented. Inversion of the total magnetic anomalies was performed by adding the background level in addition to the parameters of the dyke model (e.g., dip angle, the depth to the top, half-width, the distance from the origin to the reference point, and amplitude coefficient), which are often tried to be estimated in the literature studies. In synthetic dyke models, the efficiency of the DSA in parameter estimation of theoretically generated magnetic anomalies that do not contain noise and contain random noise at different levels has been demonstrated. Firstly, in the synthetic dyke model, the efficiency of the DSA in parameter estimation of theoretically generated noise-free magnetic anomaly is demonstrated. Additionally, different levels of random noise were added to the same synthetic model anomaly to test the performance of the algorithm in case the data contained noise. The results of the inversion show that the model parameters estimated from the DSA agree well with the correct ones. This fit was also statistically checked by calculating the probability density function. In the real case, the inversion approach was then used to interpret five prominent total aeromagnetic anomalies over the well-known Kula volcanic field located in western Turkiye. The depths and widths of these magmatic bodies lying underneath these volcanic cones are about 450 m and 470 m, respectively.

Ultrasound image segmentation with multilevel threshold based on differential search algorithm

Ultrasound (US) image segmentation plays a very important role in diagnostic imaging. In order to extract special tissues from images, this study proposes a new method for segmentation of US images. The proposed method uses multilevel threshold segmentation which is based on Otsu and differential search algorithm. Testing in simulation US images shows that the proposed algorithm has a better result of segmentation than the three existing methods, including region growing, the active contour model and k-means technique. The proposed method gets the highest F-m values and the smallest area errors in experiments. Vivo US images are also tested by the proposed method and it achieves a good segmentation result.

A new Optimal reactive power planning based on differential search algorithm

This paper proposes a new multi-level methodology based on the optimal reactive power planning. The developed methodology is designed to solve the problem of the non-feasibility solution of the fuel cost minimization problem (for a given operating point) where the classical method such as interior point method (IPM) is applied. The proposed solution to solve this problem is based on the application of the optimal reactive power planning problem considering voltage stability as the initial solution of the fuel cost minimization problem. To improve the latter the load voltage deviation problem is applied to improve the system voltage profile. For a good result improvement, the reactive power planning problem and the load voltage deviation minimization problems are solved using a new optimization method namely the differential search algorithm (DSA). Moreover, the fuel cost minimization problem is solved using IPM. To identify the candidate placements of compensation devices for the optimal reactive power planning problem, a new voltage stability index namely: The Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI) is used. The methodology has been tested with the equivalent Algerian power system network, and the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach to improve the reactive power planning problem and to minimize the system voltage deviation. Cross-cumulative residual entropy-based medical image registration via hybrid differential search algorithm

Image registration is the process of overlaying images of the same scene taken at different times by different sensors from different viewpoints. The cross-cumulative residual entropy (CCRE)-based medical image registration could achieve a high precision and a strong robustness performance. However, the optimization problem formulated by CCRE consists of some local extrema, especially for noise images. In order to address these difficulties, this article proposes a new optimization algorithm named hybrid differential search algorithm (HDSA) to optimize CCRE. As HDSA consists of simple control parameters, it is independent of the initial searching point. In addition, HDSA ameliorated the search method and the iterative conditions. As a result, the optimization process is more stable and efficient. Image registration experiments of HDSA are performed and compared with the conventional differential search algorithm (DSA) and adaptive differential evolution with optional external archive (JADE). The results show that HDSA does not only overcome the difficulties of sticking in the local extrema but also enhances the precision of registration. It is effective, robust, and fast for both the single-mode rigid medical image registration and the multispectral-mode rigid medical image registration.
