Development of a digital image processing- and Machine Learning-Based Approach to Predict the Morphology and Thermal Properties of Polyurethane Foams

Polyurethane foams are frequently used to provide thermal insulation. Thanks to the blowing agents used during their synthesis, pores are created in the structure and thermal insulation is achieved through these pores. In this study, five different insulating polyurethane foam samples containing water and cyclohexane blowing agents were synthesized. Pore stabilities and their effects on pore neighboring were analyzed computationally (MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ). A digital image processing- and machine learning-based algorithm was developed to predict the mean neighboring effect distances of the produced foams. It was created using the Voronoi tessellation method used for the identification problems in industrial applications. This method showed that there was a close relationship between the calculated Voronoi neighboring effect distances of the samples and their thermal conductivity coefficients. Considering the Voronoi neighboring effect distances proposed in this study, the thermal conductivity coefficient of similar polyurethane foams could be predicted. This method required only a standard mobile phone to capture images of the samples and the algorithm developed using Python (version 3.13.2) programming language. In addition, when compared to the local surface imaging device SEM, it allowed the entire surface to be analyzed faster and at once, without any surface deterioration.

A Method of the Vibration Information Detection for Rotating Machinery Based on the Rolling-Shutter CMOS and digital image processing

It is crucial to develop precise, fast, cost-effective, and reliable technology for monitoring the condition of rotating machinery and diagnosing faults to ensure industrial production efficiency and safety. The study investigates non-contact vibration information acquisition and fault diagnosis methods. In response to the current reliance on high-speed camera hardware for visual vibration measurement, a method for visual vibration-based information acquisition and fault diagnosis is proposed. This method integrates the imaging characteristics of rolling shutter CMOS with digital image processing technology to significantly increase the sampling frequency of one-dimensional horizontal vibration information for low-cost cameras. A vibration information acquisition system is established to conduct multiple experiments on 42 vibration states. The results were consistent with theoretical values. The maximum relative error did not exceed 1.36%, and the relative standard deviation ranged from 0% to 0.6%, demonstrating the system's accurate and stable acquisition results. Comparative analysis of the diagnostic results using the K-Nearest Neighbor, AdaBoost, CatBoost, and Random Forest algorithms revealed that the Random Forest algorithm achieved the highest diagnostic accuracy, exceeding 98%. The results identified the Random Forest algorithm as the most suitable for fault diagnosis based on vibration information in this work.

Influence of gradation composition on crack evolution of stone mastic asphalt based on digital image processing

The resistance to cracking is one of the crucial considerations during the gradation design of stone mastic asphalt (SMA) pavements. However, the current insufficient understanding of the influences of gradation design on the crack evolution of SMA has led to the arbitrariness in the design of SMA. To fill this gap, this study proposes a digital image processing (DIP)-based method, combining smartphone video recording and semi-circular bending tests, to investigate the influencing mechanism of gradation composition changes on crack resistance and crack evolution of SMA with a nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) of 20 (SMA-20). The results proved the feasibility of using smartphone video recording and DIP to observe and measure the cracks evolution of asphalt mixtures. When evaluating crack resistance and crack propagation suppression, SMA with fine gradation generally performs better than SMA with coarse gradation, given the same NMAS. As loading deformation increases, the length and area of SMA cracks exhibit a linear growth trend. The change in crack area is reflected by the descending section of the SMA load-deformation (L-D) curve. The coarse aggregate content and specific surface area have a parabolic relationship with the evaluation indexes of crack resistance and propagation. Simply adjusting the gradation to be either coarser or finer does not enhance crack resistance and crack propagation suppression in SMA. Utilizing this parabolic relationship, the optimal ranges of coarse aggregate content and specific surface area can be separately determined to enhance crack resistance and crack propagation suppression of the same NMAS gradation. The findings of this study can provide valuable guidance and a theoretical basis for the targeted improvement of crack resistance during SMA gradation design. In addition, the study introduces a more convenient method for observing and measuring cracks in asphalt mixtures.

This study presents a bibliometric analysis of artificial intelligence (AI) in digital image processing (DIP), analyzing 1063 publications from the Scopus database from 1998 to 2023. The field has seen significant growth, with an average annual growth rate of 16.24%, accelerating sharply between 2020 and 2023. The analysis emphasizes AI's growing influence in healthcare and real-time image processing. China leads in publication volume, while the USA dominates in citation impact, underscoring the global and collaborative nature of AI-DIP research. Key institutions like the University of California and Tsinghua University, along with authors such as U. Rajendra Acharya, have made significant contributions to AI-driven healthcare diagnostics, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. High-impact journals, including IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, playa crucial role in advancing the field. However, this study relied on a targeted keyword search in Scopus, which may not capture all relevant research, particularly those using alternative terminologies or broader AI classifications. Additionally, challenges related to data privacy, bias, and transparency persist. Addressing these issues will be critical for the responsible development and application of AI-DIP technologies. This study offers valuable insights for future research and highlights key areas for continued exploration.

Bit Plane Slicing Concept Realization in Hardware Chip for digital image processing

A technique for expressing an image in which each pixel is represented by one or more bits of the byte is known as bit plane slicing (BPS). The BPS method necessitates the use of a bit-slicing algorithm to include hidden data in any one of the eight slices. This method uses 8 bits to represent each pixel in an (8 x 8) image. The information in a grayscale image is encoded using 8 bits since each pixel's value falls between 0 and 255. Bit plane slicing is widely used in data hiding, image compression, and other related applications of image processing in security, privacy, encryption-decryption, health care data processing, and so on. The research article provides bit plane slicing concept realization in hardware chips for digital image processing in which the 4-bit and the 8-bit images are processed to estimate the different planes and corresponding values in Xilinx ISE14.7 software using VHDL programming. In the Modelsim 10.0 software, the functional simulation is carried out for these planes with various stimulation inputs to verify the functionality of the *** Statement Bit plane slicing is a widely used concept used in digital image applications. The significance of the work is that the work provides the platform to realize the concept at the hardware chip level and how parallel processing can be used to provide the outputs in different planes based on 8-bit image processing.

In agricultural crops, leaves play crucial roles in plant physiology, providing information on both the quantity and quality of future production. They also serve as indicators for diagnosing foliar diseases. Detecting plant diseases through image reading and computer vision in a specific format allows for both quantitative and qualitative studies, which is a key step in diagnosing diseases using images of leaves exhibiting symptoms specific to a pathogen. In this study, we present an approach that integrates digital image processing to assess the extent of turnip yellows virus (genus Polerovirus, family Solemoviridae) infection in oilseed rape. This study focuses on the early detection and classification of the pathogen, as well as the identification of leaf surfaces affected by the turnip yellows virus. This allows for the evaluation of the severity of the infection and its impact on plant productivity together with the development of a pathogen control strategy that will benefit agricultural farmers. Thus, this experiment serves as a benchmark for future research in this field. The results show that the proposed method, based on color parameters in the L*a*b* color space and Lp-norms, accurately classifies the severity of viral attacks, enabling the precise evaluation of crop health. This method can be applied in real-time crop health monitoring, scientific research to assess the effectiveness of phytosanitary treatments, the testing of disease resistance, and targeted intervention strategies. It will help reduce crop losses and support sustainable agricultural practices.

digital image processing is an integral part of the computer vision field. However, traditional digital image processing teaching methods mainly focus on theoretical knowledge, lacking practical teaching content. To address this issue, this article proposes a project-based learning (PBL) model that consists of four key stages: project proposal, implementation, summary, and evaluation. Instructors design one or more digital image processing projects in the project proposal stage with specific objectives, backgrounds, content, and deliverables. During the implementation stage, students work on the projects under close guidance, applying various teaching methods such as independent learning, teamwork, and academic exchange. The summary stage involves students reflecting on and evaluating their project outcomes, challenges, and potential improvements. Finally, the evaluation stage utilizes a comprehensive, operable, impartial, and traceable system to assess project completion quality and student performance. Through case studies, this project-based learning model demonstrates how it can help students better understand the theoretical knowledge of digital image processing, apply it to practical projects, and improve their ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical operations. Ultimately, this improves teaching quality and facilitates the achievement of teaching goals.

Mesoscopic mechanism behind the inherent reliquefaction resistance subjected to repeated earthquakes using centrifuge modelling and advanced digital image processing

Around the world severe damages were observed due to reliquefaction during repeated earthquakes, whereas precise understanding of its mesoscopic mechanism is not much discovered. Influence of these earthquakes on reliquefaction needs to be investigated to understand its significance in contributing to inherent sand resistance. In the present study, centrifuge model experiments were performed to examine the influence of foreshocks/aftershocks and mainshock sequence on resistance to reliquefaction. Two different shaking sequences comprising six shaking events were experimented with Toyoura sand specimen with 50 % relative density. Acceleration amplitude and shaking duration of a mainshock is twice that of foreshock/aftershock. In-house developed advanced digital image processing (DIP) technology was used to estimate mesoscopic characteristics from the images captured during the experiment. The responses were recorded in the form of acceleration, excess pore pressure (EPP), subsidence, induced sand densification, cyclic stress ratio, void ratio and average coordination number. Presence of foreshocks slightly increased the resistance against EPP before it gets completely liquefied during the mainshock. Similarly, aftershocks also regained the resistance of liquefied soil due to reorientation of particles and limited generation of EPP. However, application of mainshocks triggered liquefaction and reliquefaction and thus eliminated the beneficial effects achieved from the prior foreshocks. Reliquefaction was observed to be more damaging than the first liquefaction, meanwhile the induced sand densification from repeated shakings did not contribute to increased resistance to reliquefaction. The apparent void ratio estimated from the DIP technology was in good agreement with real void ratio values. As the most important separation technique in mineral processing, flotation has been the subject of intensive investigation over many years, but despite these efforts it remains a poorly understood process that defies generally useful mathematical modelling. As a result the control of industrial flotation plants is often based on the visual appearance of the froth phase, and depends to a large extent on the experience and ability of a human operator. These types of processes are consequently often controlled suboptimally owing to high personnel turnover, lack of fundamental understanding of plant dynamics, inaccuracy or unreliability of manual control systems, etc. By using techniques based on image colour analysis and Fast Fourier Transforms to process videographic data of the froth phase in a copper flotation plant, it is shown that an image processing system can distinguish between different copper levels in the froth down a rougher bank and extract global features from the visual characteristics of the surface froth. In this way it is possible to quantify the mineral content of the froth (based on colour), the average bubble size distribution, the direction of flow and the shape of the bubbles or the mobility of the froth. The overall image of the froth is analysed instead of attempting to identify the boundaries between bubbles.

The herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is widely used in agriculture to control various weeds. The objective of this study was to use the digital image processing method to identify alveolar lesions in the lungs of rats submitted to chronic 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) inhalation exposure. We used forty adult male Wistar rats. The rats were divided into four groups: control group (CG), low concentration group (LCG), medium concentration group (MCG), and high concentration group (HCG). In a 6-month exposure period, we used two boxes connected to ultrasonic nebulizers for herbicide spraying. After this period, the rats were euthanized for the collection and study of lung tissue. For each image, counts of injuries and blisters were performed automatically using a methodology based on digital image processing techniques. For analysis of the results, an electronic database (Excel (R)) was created. We used the Pearson method for correlation analysis;values of p <0.05 were considered significant. In the evaluation of healthy alveoli, we recorded positive and significant correlations between analysis from a pathologist and computational analysis. In the evaluation of injured alveoli, we recorded a positive but non-significant correlation between analysis from a pathologist and computational analysis. These results show the effectiveness of digital image processing when evaluating alveolar integrity.
