Analysis of freeway service patrol with discrete event-based simulation

As an efficient incident management program, freeway service patrol has gained wide popularity. There is increasing need for developing systematic procedures' of planning the program to ensure efficient resource allocation and to achieve maximum benefits. A discrete event-based simulation model is developed to replicate the patrol process that includes districting, incident generation, response vehicle dispatching and routing, and incident clearance. Model validation proves its capability to accurately replicate the incident generation/distribution process. Later, the Interstate-95 freeway in south Florida is used as a model application example to test alternatives, and the improved alternative shows better performance compared with the previous even-length districting method and the currently used even-activity districting approach. Besides traditional roving scheme, the simulation model also has the capability to evaluate the prepositioning schemes. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis is performed to examine the impact of operational parameter settings, such as beat districting, incident detection rate, and incident frequency. Although continuous efforts are needed to develop a more comprehensive simulation model for the freeway service patrol program, the application example presented in this study reveals promising application results, and provides an insight into the patrol process as well as a better understanding of the impact of parameters on performance. Manufacturing companies are experiencing many challenges with regard to customer-oriented and on-time production, especially in the context of an intensified global business and while advancing the digital transformation. Accordingly, the ongoing development and deployment of Industry 4.0 solutions for customisable products in small batch sizes, not only pose new problems for work preparation, but also for operative production planning in connection with high cost, time and quality pressure. Modern, complex and highly automated production systems (in this case from the semiconductor domain) must be operated close to an optimal operating state in order to be economically reasonable. Promised delivery dates and throughput times specified in contracted service agreements must be ensured and require a permanent and effective adjustment of production planning and control in daily execution. All other general conditions of an economic production remain unchanged. Today, the question of whether the production target is realistic and whether all promised delivery dates are met are today still answered with rather simple backward-oriented approaches, mostly without taking into account uncertainties, stochastic behaviour of the manufacturing system or alternatives that arise during operation. As shown in previous publications, these questions can be answered in more detail and more resilient using a backward-oriented discrete event-based simulation approach (SimBack). This article presents additional findings. The results show and deepen the impression, that the SimBack-approach can be successfully solve scheduling questions for customer-specific orders in a real-world environment. © 2022 The Authors. In this paper a multi-modelling experiment is presented through which we have studied the possibilities of manufacturing process control supported by different digital simulation models. The main pillar of the study is a real, operating, research and demonstration cyber-physical production system which is detailed in the study. Our digital twin of the system in question includes two different virtual models;an agent-based model endowed with the ability of error handling, and a discrete-event simulation-based model for forecasting and supporting the error handling routine with evaluating bids. The experiment includes typical manufacturing processes with machine failures, which should be detected and recognized to invoke both simulations for re-forecast and error management. Replacing combustion vehicles with electric vehicles is a major step towards reducing CO2 emissions. With regard to this shift, in particular commercial or governmental vehicle fleets are believed to be early adopters. However, the electrification of vehicle fleets is a complex task since it can have a huge impact on companies' day-to-day-business. This article presents a lightweight simulation framework to support the planning process and to study important effects of vehicle fleet electrification. Our discrete event-based approach allows to investigate economical and environmental aspects, such as the impact on operating costs, the required electric energy, or the amount of CO2 emissions. based on a given trip schedule (consisting of start time, distance, and duration), the framework allows deriving all necessary information, among others to dimension both the vehicle fleet and the charging infrastructure. We show the usefulness and the capability of our model by presenting results for a mid-sized company's vehicle fleet comprising 100 vehicles.

Manufacturing is today often characterized by a growing number of customer-specific products that have to be manufactured and delivered in given lead times, according to concrete delivery dates. Thus, highly relevant questions like "When to start a production order at latest, in order to stay within my lead time?" are answered by more or less primitive, backward-oriented planning approaches and without taking into consideration uncertainty or alternatives. It gets more complex, if different products are to be produced and the more complex the underlying manufacturing system is (e.g. semiconductor with re-entry cycles). These questions could be answered more specifically, more detailed and more robust, if discrete, event-based simulation (DES) would be applied in a backward-oriented manner. This paper describes evaluation results from the semiconductor domain and names restrictions and limits. They also show, that the backward-oriented simulation approach can be applied successfully for the scheduling of customer-specific orders.
