Reinforcement learning (RL) is an emerging research topic in production and logistics, as it offers potentials to solve complex planning and control problems in real time. In recent years, many researchers investigated RL algorithms for solving production scheduling problems. However, most of the related articles reveal only little information about the process of developing and implementing RL applications. Against this background, we present a method for modeling production scheduling problems as RL environments. More specifically, we propose the application of discrete -event simulation for modeling production scheduling problems as an interoperable environments and the Gym interface of the OpenAl foundation to allow a simple integration of pre built RL algorithms from OpenAl Baselines and Stable Baselines. We support our explanations with a simple example of a job shop scheduling problem. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.

Organizations are constantly looking for ways to improve the performance of their business processes (BPs) by making them more understandable, coordinated, streamlined, and effective. As a result, stakeholders are invited to take part in BP's management and improvement projects, which make use of modeling and simulation technologies. The influence of resources (human, monetary,...) and their allocation in a business process has a significant impact on the simulation results, thus they must be portrayed accurately from the analysts ' standpoint. By offering concepts, methodologies, and tools that combine business process modeling and simulation, this study bridges the gap between the two worlds. This paper presents perspectives on a metamodel-based transformation approach for Business Process modeling and Notation (BPMN) models extended with Business Process simulation Interchange Standard (BPSIM) into discrete event System Specification (DEVS) simulation models with an emphasis on resource allocation. Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) is a set of standards designed to provide determinism to Ethernet or wireless networks for real-time applications. Network Calculus (NC) is the best-known formal tool for TSN analysis, but it is hard to apply in scenarios of changing conditions. Petri Nets can potentially overcome some limitations of NC, but they have rarely been used as an analytical tool for TSN. This work presents a novel modeling methodology exploiting Timed Continuous Petri Nets (TCPNs) to abstract and analyze TSN nodes. Copyright (C) 2024 The Authors. The wastewater treatment process (WWTP) has now become an increasingly important process in order to accommodate sustainable goals and mitigate the water crisis. modeling of WWTP is crucial to performing estimation, control, and optimization. Since WWTP displays large-scale, multiscale behavior, a data-driven multiresolution dynamic mode decomposition (MrDMD) based approach fits well to uncover spatiotemporal structure at high resolution. In the current work, we propose incorporating exogenous variables (control) in the MrDMD framework. Further, we illustrate how slow mode reconstructions at different decomposition levels uniquely capture the process's multiscale behavior. Additionally, we demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach on benchmark WWTP. We also compare its performance with the dynamic mode decomposition-based model. Copyright (c) 2024 The Authors.

The Generalized discrete event System specification (G-DEVS) language was introduced by Norbert Giambiasi in the 1990s. This paper first examines the specification of G-DEVS and gives an historical view of N Giambiasi's works that contributed to this concept. The paper particularly focuses on the extension of G-DEVS to distributed simulation. An example of a G-DEVS model of a ski chairlift system with chair and skier is proposed to show the accuracy gained by using G-DEVS instead of other classical discrete event modeling formalisms. Then, the paper presents how G-DEVS has been extended for interoperability with other components in the context of supply chain modeling and simulation coping, with the possibility to compose different model formats at simulation time. Next, the focus is on a G-DEVS editor tool and its extensions: LSIS_DME. The distributed simulation and the high-level architecture standard were used to support the interoperability of various models and simulators.

It is well known that the dependability of equipment on a production site is strongly linked to the quality of maintenance operations. This paper focuses on repair shops dedicated to the overhaul of defective equipment from several sites, via circular economy strategies. The literature provides analytical and numerical models that allow the performance of a repair shop to be evaluated under certain conditions. However, the majority of studies do not highlight the impact of component degradation after each equipment overhaul. We propose to study the life cycle of components throughout a repair process. Each component begins a cycle with a discrete failure rate that increases with the number of operations undergone. At the end of their life, components undergo an operation that allows them to have a second life. The novelty of this paper lies in the evaluation of the impact of the component life cycle on the performance of a repair shop. We propose a closed-loop model with which we were able to carry out a case study in the railway sector. The results show that considering several levels of component degradation in the repair shop has an impact on maintenance costs. Copyright (c) 2023 The Authors.

Modern discrete events Systems (SED) such as Manufacturing systems, Transport and Logistic system, among many others, are very large and complex. The bottom-up modeling methodologies based on building basic modules (either in Finite Automata (FA) or Petri nets (PN)) and then merging them using synchronous and permissive products result insufficient (the derived models are large and unreadable). To cope this problem, this paper introduces a modeling methodology based on the novel synchronous product, denotes as ".". This single product subsumes the previously reported synchronous and permissive products, and it is capable to handle large system in a formal yet efficient way. The main advantage of this new product deals in the fact that it is an associative and commutative operator in the class of Compositional State Machines (CSM). Moreover, (CSM,.) forms a moniod. Furthermore, by defining a partial order relation on the CSM set, a lattice is found. This structure is relevant since the resulting meet operation provides the common subsystems of a couple of systems, and the join operation represents how subsystems build a larger system. Finally, the purpose of this modelling methodology is twofold, on the one hand the model of the system is easy to follow and can be displayed in a Human-Machine Interface (HMI), on the other hand it can be used for analysis and control purposes. Maintenance jobs are an important aspect of manufacturing systems and compete for the same resources of the production jobs. Even though literature has pointed operational benefits of integrating the production and maintenance plans, there is the gap of handling the problem in a simulationbased approach that is responsive to disturbances. This paper aims to propose an adaptive method for integrating production and maintenance planning using simulation-based optimization The method is tested in a simulation model of a semiconductor factory. Results show improvements on key performance indicators when compared to scenarios with simple dispatching rules. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.

This paper deals with an application developed with MATLAB at the Universite Claude Bernard Lyon 1, France, for any user to be able to learn GRAFCET with numerical experiments without any automation hardware or real system. It has been designed during the COVID'19 lockdown to be easy to use for students with weak experience with computer programming (assuming few hours already spent on MATLAB) and assuming to have followed the basic course on logic systems and GRAFCET for a few hours. The user defined parts of the application is concerned with few MATLAB script files (with existing examples) to define his/her own input/output variables and his/her own GRAFCET. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows to play with two examples: A simple toy example with 5 input/output variables where the user can learn how to translate his/her "paper" GRAFCET solution into this application and how to use the GUI to run simulations for final GRAFCET evaluations. The second available system is a 4 floor lift based on 30 input/output variables which is a more complex example to focus to evaluate the user. For each example a digital twin is also available (its development is not a part of the user work) to update the state of underlying continuous variables and logic measures needed for the evolution inside the GRAFCET based on the state of the system actions updated by the GRAFCET. Other digital twin of systems and/or user defined GRAFCET may be added in the application. Copyright (C) 2022 The Authors.
