Possibilistic pathways and decision-making for goal achievement in integrated agritourism

Diversification of agricultural systems in order to integrate off-farm activities, like tourism, is a way to improve the overall system resilience while shaping a project that is eco-friendly as well as socially relevant. However, creating and maintaining such an integrated agritouristic system requires finding a way to organize individual and collective management of activities and commons in order to articulate the founding goals and values with day-to-day functioning. Current modeling tools are limited in the number of aspects they can integrate because of data requirement and because of the high number of dimensions that it involves. In this study, we characterize a case study of integrated agritourism possible pathways leading to a target corresponding to the founding socio-ecological goals of its stakeholders. We propose to build an innovative exploratory model representing the socio-ecological dynamics of an integrated agritouristic system following the qualitative and possibilistic Ecological discrete-event Network (EDEN) framework. The model outputs revealed that pathways leading to the target exist and can be more or less straightforward. However, the ability to reach the target can also be lost after a few steps due to a set of biophysical reactions and management decisions affecting sensitive states. Some of these pathways ultimately lead to an agritouristic system that could be considered fully functional but unable to fulfill the socio-ecological goals of its stakeholders. A form of path dependency emerges from these results: transitions involving one or a subset of activities can lead the whole system towards an irreversible and undesirable pathway. It results from a high level of interdependency between the activities. Identifying such lock-in effects can be a first step towards co-constructed path-breaking.

Rail modeling and simulation is an effective decision support instrument for planning and designing complex rail infrastructures and operations. To successfully support these activities at a large scale, the simulation model should be sufficiently detailed and yet be computationally efficient. This poses a set of challenges pertaining to the design of the models. In this paper, we propose a component-based light-rail modeling and simulation library in the discrete event system specification (DEVS) formalism. The proposed library is described in detail and is shown to be efficient and scalable. We conclude the paper by offering a set of good design principles derived from this experience, which are also relevant to other types of large-scale infrastructure system simulation model design.

The creation of models for heterogeneous and complex cellular networks is a central goal of Systems Biology. When modeling a biological network, one may wish to account for certain aspects in detail, while a bird's eye perspective would seem more appropriate for other parts. Multi-level models combine such overview and detail representations. We illustrate multi-level modeling with gene regulation of the Tryptophan operon in E. coli. We review three discrete event modeling formalisms and discuss model design therein: DEVS, STATECHARTS, and stochastic pi-CALCULUS. This introductory presentation already reveals some of their respective virtues and shortcomings.

Smart manufacturing utilizes digital twins that are virtual forms of their production plants for analyzing and optimizing decisions. Digital twins have been mainly developed as discrete-event models (DEMs) to represent the detailed and stochastic dynamics of productions in the plants. The optimum decision is achieved after simulating the DEM-based digital twins under various what-if decision candidates;thus, simulation acceleration is crucial for rapid optimum determination for given problems. For the acceleration of discrete-event simulations, adaptive abstraction-level conversion approaches have been previously proposed to switch active models of each machine group between a set of DEM components and a corresponding lookup table-based mean-delay model during runtime. The switching is decided by detecting the machine group's convergence into (or divergence from) a steady state. However, there is a tradeoff between speedup and accuracy loss in the adaptive abstraction convertible simulation (AACS), and inaccurate simulation can degrade the quality of the optimum (i.e., the distance between the calculated optimum and the actual optimum). A modular synthesis approach for the coordination of multi-agent systems: the multiple team case

In this paper, we deal with the problem of coordinating multiple agents to accomplish a global task. This problem consists of a set of agents divided into teams of homogeneous agents that interact with each other in order to autonomously complete a common global task. Due to the fact that agents in a team are exactly the same both in hardware and control software, the open-loop behavior of any agent in a team can be represented by a template, as well as its local control specifications. Our approach is based on the Supervisory Control Theory and it derives sufficient conditions that allow us to synthesize for each team a local supervisor template from templates associated with the team and the global task model in such a way that, when this supervisor template is instantiated for the other agents in the team, the global task can be completed by the coordinated action of all agents in the system. Our sufficient conditions also guarantee that a computed set of supervisor templates does not need to be recomputed or reconfigured whenever agents are added or removed from teams. An example of 3D robotic construction is provided to illustrate our approach.

Control protocol synthesis for multi-agent systems with similar actions instantiated from agent and requirement templates

In this paper we investigate supervisor synthesis for a multi-agent system, which consists of an indefinite number of agents, all instantiated from a given agent template via corresponding language isomorphisms. We call such a system a multi-agent system with similar actions, as their individual alphabets are isomorphic to each other. Each agent shares a common global alphabet with other agents, but their private alphabets are disjoint. All local requirements are also instantiated from a given requirement template. We formulate a control protocol synthesis problem, which assumes that each private alphabet is only observable to the corresponding agent, but the global alphabet is accessible by all agents. Our goal is to compute a control protocol (i.e., a supervisor template) whose instantiations associated with individual agents ensure a controllable, nonblocking and requirement-satisfying behavior of the system, regardless of the total number of constituent agents. A solution to this problem will make the desirable plug-and-play control strategy feasible. We show that the existence of a solution is decidable, and a solution is computable when the answer to the decision problem is positive. High-level modeling and synthesis of smart sensor networks for Industrial Internet of Things

In this work, we use a high-level design methodology for the rapid hardware synthesis of a complex smart sensor network (SSN) system. The GRAFCET is then used to model the individual functional modules and the hierarchical behavior of the system. The behavior of each module is represented as a sequential-concurrent hybrid discrete event system. We apply high-level synthesis rules to generate a VHSIC hardware description language (VHDL)-target efficient hardware for a smart sensor controller and smart gateway controller. Finally, these embedded hardware controllers are generated automatically to integrate all intelligent functional modules into a complex embedded system, and a hardware circuit is then synthesized. The experimental results show that the hardware circuit can meet the definition of an SSN system for Industrial Internet of Things applications. Moreover, this methodology enables a coherent design quality, short design period, low development cost, and short time-to-market for complex industrial applications. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Hierarchical Aggregation/Disaggregation for Adaptive Abstraction-Level Conversion in Digital Twin-Based Smart Semiconductor Manufacturing

In smart manufacturing, engineers typically analyze unexpected real-time problems using digitally cloned discrete-event (DE) models for wafer fabrication. To achieve a faster response to problems, it is essential to increase the speed of DE simulations because making optimal decisions for addressing the issues requires repeated simulations. This paper presents a hierarchical aggregation/disaggregation (A/D) method that substitutes complex event-driven operations with two-layered abstracted models-single-group mean-delay models (SMDMs) and multi-group MDMs (MMDMs)-to gain simulation speedup. The SMDM dynamically abstracts a DE machine group's behaviors into observed mean-delay constants when the group converges into a steady state. The MMDM fast-forwards the input lots by bypassing the chained processing steps in multiple steady-state groups until it schedules the lots for delivery to subsequent unsteady groups after corresponding multi-step mean delays. The key component, the abstraction-level converter (ALC), has the roles of MMDM allocation, deallocation, extension, splitting, and controls the flow of each group's input lot by deciding the destination DE model, SMDM, and MMDMs. To maximize the reuse of previously computed multi-step delays for the dynamically changing MMDMs, we propose an efficient method to manage the delays using two-level caches. Each steady-state group's ALC performs statistical testing to detect the lot-arrival change to reactivate the DE model. However, fast-forwarding (FF) results in incorrect test results of the bypassed group's ALCs due to the missed observations of the bypassed lots. Thus, we propose a method for test-sample reinitialization that considers the bypassing. Moreover, since a bypassed group's unexpected divergence can change the multi-step delays of previously scheduled events, a method for examination of FF history is designed to trace the highly influenced events. The DEVS formalism consists in a rigorous frame for model building and simulating. One one hand, the mathematical description of the DEVS meta-model allows for thorough building of models. One the other hand, the proposed algorithms for model simulation allow for quickly building simulating tools for these models. However, in between these two phases, there are some less-detailed steps such as components initial state handling. This article aims at proposing an interpretation of DEVS formalism slightly different from the one generally observed, and at strengthening the executable model building stage. The article proposes to explicitly split the model description between an user-defined abstract model and an executable model which construction can be automatically done by the simulating tool. Based on this vision, the initial state of executable models can be managed from within the DEVS formalism.

A Dynamic System Model for Personalized Healthcare Delivery and Managed Individual Health Outcomes

The current healthcare system is facing an unprecedented chronic disease burden. This paper develops a dynamic mathematical simulation model for personalized healthcare delivery and managed individual health outcomes. It utilizes a highly novel hetero-functional graph theory, most easily understood as an ontological convergence of model-based systems engineering and network science, along with Petri nets. The dynamics of the model builds upon a recently developed systems architecture for healthcare delivery, which bears several analogies to the architecture of mass-customized production systems. At its essence, the model consists of two synchronized Petri nets;one for the healthcare delivery system and another for individuals' health state evolution. The dynamic model links logistical and medical phenomena using a combination of a deterministic Petri net model for the former and a fuzzy Petri net for the latter. The model is demonstrated on two clinical case studies;acute and chronic. Together, the case studies show that the model applies equally to the care of both acute and chronic conditions, transparently describes health outcomes and links them to the evolution of the healthcare delivery system and its associated costs.
