distributed arithmetic coding (DAC) is an effective implementation of Slepian-Wolf problem. In this paper, the coding theory of DAC is introduced including two implements for asymmetric Slepian-Wolf problem, distributed Overlap arithmetic coding (DOAC) and distributed Quasi-arithmetic coding (DQAC). Both of the implementation schemes are analyzed. The advantages and disadvantages of them are compared and discussed. Then an improved scheme with easier encoding and decoding is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is better than DOAC and DQAC.

Hyperspectral images are of very large data size and highly correlated in neighboring bands, therefore, it is necessary to realize the efficient compression performance on the condition of low encoding complexity. In this paper, we propose a method based on both partitioning embedded block and lossless adaptive-distributed arithmetic coding (LADAC). Combined with three-dimensional wavelet transform and SW-SPECK algorithm, LADAC is adopted according to the correlation between the adjacent bit-plane. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms 3D-SPECK, furthermore, our method need not take the inter-band prediction or transform into account, so the complexity is small relatively.

Image compression plays a crucial role in medical imaging, allowing efficient manipulation, storage, and transmission. Nevertheless, in medical applications the need to conserve the diagnostic validity of the image requires the use of lossless compression methods, producing low compression factors. In this paper, a novel near-lossless compression scheme is proposed here and yields significantly better compression rates. In this proposed method, base points, direction images and D-value images are obtained from RGB color wee image by transformation. Base points, direction images are encoded by binary coding, distributed arithmetic coding. Wavelet coefficients of D-value images are encoded by adaptive Huffman coding. As a result, high over all compression rates, better diagnostic image quality and improved performance parameters are obtained. The algorithm is tested on experimental medical images from different modalities and different body districts and results are reported.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a flexible and novel video coding mode that is different from traditional video compression methods, which can shift the complex task such as motion estimation from encoder to decoder. Nowadays, most of the DVC architectures adopt channel coding such as low-density parity-check codes. It is found that arithmetic coding can be also extended to compress correlated sources and even has better performance than the channel coding for short to medium block length sources. Therefore, we propose a DVC scheme using interval overlapped arithmetic coding that is distributed arithmetic coding (DAC) without feedback channel, where the Key frames are compressed using traditional video coder while the Wyner-Ziv frames are compressed using DAC. We compare the rate-distortion performance of the proposed scheme with the state-of-the-arts, and the experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme is competitive. The source code for this scheme is available in GitHub.

We address distributed source coding with decoder side information, when the decoder observes the source through a noisy channel. Existing approaches employ syndrome- or parity-based channel codes. We propose a new approach based on distributed arithmetic coding (DAC). We introduce a DAC with forbidden symbol, which allows to tune the redundancy according to the amount of channel noise. We propose a novel sequential decoder that employs the known side information to decode the corrupted codeword. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme is better than parity-based turbo codes at relatively short block lengths.

DAC Spectrum of Binary Sources with Equally-Likely Symbols

Though distributed arithmetic coding (DAC) is an effective implementation of Slepian-Wolf coding, its performance, which is closely linked with its decoding complexity, has not received a thorough analysis. With binary sources with equally-likely symbols as the research object, this paper develops the DAC spectrum and makes use of it as a tool to answer the complexity problem of the ideal DAC decoder. Based on an in-depth analysis on DAC decoding process, we define the DAC spectrum and propose to find it by a recursive formulation. Firstly, the initial DAC spectrum is constrained by a functional equation and the Fourier transform is utilized to obtain its general explicit form. Secondly, an equation is given through which stage-(i+1) DAC spectrum can be deduced from stage-i DAC spectrum. A numerical method is also proposed for calculating DAC spectrum, whose convergency is proved. To measure the complexity of the ideal DAC decoder, we define the expansion factor and relate it to DAC spectrum. It is proved that if binary symbols 0 and 1 are mapped onto partially overlapped intervals [0, q) and [1 - q, 1) respectively, the expansion factor will converge to 2q, i.e., the complexity of the ideal rate-alpha DAC decoder is approximately O(2(n(1-alpha))).

Analysis on Tailed distributed arithmetic Codes for Uniform Binary Sources

distributed arithmetic coding (DAC) is a variant of AC that can realize Slepian-Wolf coding in a nonlinear way. In our previous work, we defined codebook cardinality spectrum (CCS) and Hamming distance spectrum (HDS) for DAC. In this paper, we make use of CCS and HDS to analyze tailed DAC, which is a form of DAC that, as traditional AC, maps the last few symbols of each source block onto non-overlapped intervals. First, we derive the exact HDS formula for tailless DAC, a form of DAC that maps all the symbols of each source block onto overlapped intervals, and show that the HDS formula previously given is in fact approximation. Then, the HDS formula is extended to tailed DAC. Using CCS, we also deduce the average codebook cardinality, which is closely related to decoding complexity, and rate loss of tailed DAC. The effects of tail length are extensively analyzed. It is revealed that by increasing tail length to a value not close to the bitstream length, closely spaced codewords within the same codebook can be removed at the cost of a higher decoding complexity and a larger rate loss. Finally, theoretical analyses are verified by experiments.

Improved Binary DAC Codec with Spectrum for Equiprobable Sources

Slepian-Wolf coding (SWC) can be effectively implemented by distributed arithmetic coding (DAC) codes. A theoretical tool named spectrum has been developed to analyze the complexity of the full-search binary DAC (BDAC) decoder for equiprobable sources. Following this work, this paper aims at improving the coding efficiency of BDAC codes. To achieve this goal, this paper analyzes how BDAC codes partition source space into codebooks and links codebook cardinalities with the initial spectrum. Further, by exploiting the final spectrum, this paper proves that the decoding error probability of BDAC codes will not tend to zero as code length goes to infinity, even at rates greater than the Slepian-Wolf limit. On the basis of theoretical analyses, two techniques are proposed to reduce the decoding error probability of BDAC codes, i.e., the permutation technique, which removes "near" (in the sense of Hamming distance) codewords in each codebook, and the weighted branching technique, which reduces the mis-pruning risk of proper paths during the decoding. The effectiveness of both techniques is well verified by experimental results.

distributed arithmetic coding (DAC) is an effective technique for implementing Slepian-Wolf coding (SWC). It has been shown that a DAC code partitions source space into unequal-size codebooks, so that the overall performance of DAC codes depends on the cardinality and structure of these codebooks. The problem of DAC codebook cardinality has been solved by the so-called codebook cardinality spectrum (CCS). This paper extends the previous work on CCS by studying the problem of DAC codebook structure. We define Hamming distance spectrum (HDS) to describe DAC codebook structure and propose a mathematical method to calculate the HDS of DAC codes. The theoretical analyses are verified by experimental results.
