The increase of vehicle traffic in agglomerated urban areas often leads to congestions that decrease significantly the system performances. The intersection signal traffic controllers cannot improve themselves the system throughput when the congestions appear. Therefore a coordination of distributedcontrol components is necessary. The proposed distributed algorithm is based on multiagent system that uses dynamic prices for the vehicle streams to find the cycle splits that avoid the traffic congestions.

Emergent power and automation technologies provide new opportunities and challenges for multi-disciplinary ship design. In particular, these dynamically interdependent systems require dependable, fault-tolerant control to efficiently manage limited resources and to respond to casualty conditions. Design of an electric warship engineering and damage control system of systems is considered as an illustrative example. In this context, cost and survivability can be considered as either deterministic or probabilistic independent variables. The paper presents the design and implementation of an innovative Integrated Development Environment, developed within the on-going European Research Project TORERO, to model and design reusable distributedcontrolsystems (DCS). As management has developed throughout the years, the production and logistic processes have changed dramatically toward a product centric approach. Consequently, new capacities are expected for the products in their informational, sensory and decisional interactions with processes, information systems, operators and users. This article presents an approach that aims to transform a product into intelligent product or smart object. The task allocation problem consists in defining a space and time sharing of system resources that can meet all logical and operational constraints of the tasks being considered. For real-time tasks with predictable behavior (periodic), static allocation provides a reliable way to meet temporal scheduling requirements, together with other operational constraints, such as task replication for fault-tolerance. Unfortunately, finding an optimal feasible allocation is known to be NP-hard, and thus heuristic approaches have been proposed. In this paper, the use of a new heuristic to generate static allocations for critical periodic tasks in real-time distributedcontrolsystems is described.

We construct and analyze a fast broadcasting algorithm working in the presence of Byzantine component faults. Such faults are particularly difficult to deal with, as faulty components may behave arbitrarily (even maliciously) as transmitters, by either blocking, rerouting, or altering transmitted messages in a way most detrimental to the broadcasting process. We assume that links and nodes of a communication network are subject to Byzantine failures, and that faults are distributed randomly and independently, with link failure probability p and node failure probability q, these parameters satisfying the inequality (1- p 2 )(1- q ) > 1/2. A broadcasting algorithm, working in an n -node network, is called almost safe if the probability of its correctness is at least 1-1/ n , for sufficiently large n . Thus the robustness of the algorithm grows with the size of the network. Our main result is the design and analysis of an almost safe broadcasting algorithm working in time O (log 2 n ) and using O ( n log n ) messages in n-node networks. The novelty of our algorithm is that it can cope with the most difficult type of faults, potentially affecting all components of the network (both its links and nodes), and that it is simultaneously robust and efficient.

The paper deals with simulation and analysis tools of control system with distributed inputs and outputs based on TCP/IP and UDP/IP protocols. These protocols are not strictly prepared for industrial control applications. Mostly for improving timedelay ability of communication, TCP/IP protocol is changed by UDP/IP. These protocols have different buffering of data which can cause dead-lock. It is very important to have the ability to simulate network behaviors that depends on real time data transfer and buffer capacity. Methodology of dataflow models for systems simulation and analysis are often used. Model of the simultaneously working processors executing independent tasks may be used for simulation of the wide range of systems with parallel processes structure.

This paper discusses globally distributed telematics applications in the environmental monitoring and industrial automation application areas. The requirements on the necessary distributed computing infrastructure are described. Based on these requirements, the usefulness of component-based software architectures and open service architectures is discussed, and the applicability of the Open ServicesGateway initiative (OSGi) in these applications is evaluated.

The paper is aimed at summarizing the current state-of-the-art in development of the agent-based solutions in three areas connected with industrial production, namely in holonic control, production management and virtual enterprises. It is shown how the results in these three sub-areas converge and that the agent-oriented technology could provide a good background for developing a unifying approach. Two industrial applications of agent-based systems are described in more details. Both the positive and negative aspects of applying the agent-based solutions in industry are discussed.
