SETTA addresses the systems engineering of safety-critical distributed real¬time systems with a special focus on time-triggered architectures. An innovative meth¬odology and a corresponding engineering environment is developed which aims for a higher maturity at early development steps. Key features are the support for a virtual systems integration and the tighter interconnection between the functional development process and the safety analysis process. The supporting tool components are designed and implemented in the course of the SETTA project. The methodology is evaluated by pilot applications from the automotive, aerospace, and railway domain.

Recent advances in information technology provide opportunities for secure, efficient and economical data transfer vis-à-vis real time operations for large-scale traffic systems equipped with sensor systems. This paper describes an Internet based control architecture that provides an automated mechanism for real-time route guidance using a high performance computing environment located at a remote site. Rail traffic is controlled by a set of interlocking computers distributed within the railway network and on-board computers on the trains. The safety assessment and validation of such computers shall not depend on the system architecture, so common assessment criteria are needed. The ACRuDA project consisted of identifying the state of the art, defining a common method and common criteria for assessment, applying them in case studies and refining them in the light of the case study experiences. The project succeeded in defining a common set of criteria that are applicable to all currently implemented digital architectures.

Advanced information-processing technologies are providing advanced controllers with capabilities to tackle control problems of intrinsic complexity. Methods to cope with the difficulties of software-intensive control system development are needed, because quality issues in control software are of extreme importance. Architecture-based development provides a clear pathway to controller quality, focusing on component-based control system development. In the case of intelligent controllers, advanced control modules (expert, fuzzy, neural, etc.) can be built to be reusable. In the ideal situation, application construction would be a matter of merely plugging the controllers into an architectural framework, followed by a simple customization. The development and application of a real-time intelligent control system to provide supervisory control of fed-batch fermentation is presented. The system performs sensor fault detection and diagnosis, the application of artificial neural network to the estimation and prediction of fermentation process variables, and fermentation process optimization. Basing on the intelligent control strategies for the production process of L-lysine fermentation, more economic profile is obtained by industrial application.

Real-time controlsystems are often distributed, with complex data sharing requirements. A method is proposed using a distributed real-time database, extended with active rules that react to changes in the system. This database is fully replicated and nodes communicate using only the database distribution facilities. Temporal constraints at individual nodes may be met at the expense of temporary inconsistencies in the database. This paper investigates the effects of using a rulebased representation and the replicated database as a distribution mechanism for certain classes of real-time systems. Particular attention is paid to the effect of reduced consistency, assuming eventual consistency.

Embedded systems are computer-based systems which must respond to external stimuli within time scales determined by the external environment. Such systems are required to achieve ever more demanding behavioural. performance and safety requirements. Embedded systems are found in applications such as primary flight control, gas-turbine engine control and railway traffic management Often complex embedded systems are distributed, typically to achieve demanding performance or dependability requirements, and must operate within hard real-time constraints. Considerable effort is required to select optimal design solutions and ensure adherence to specified requirements. In embedded systems safety, reliability and response-times are considered as strict constraints on the system design. Achievement of these constraints requires meticulous analysis, typically through the use of specialist modelling and simulation techniques. Integration of knowledge and understanding obtained from disparate detailed models remains a considerable challenge. Ideally, a system which has both continuous dynamics and event-driven parts. would be modelled in one environment, using the most appropriate techniques for each part, and allowing the analysis of the whole system to be carried out simultaneously. The paper presents an integrated approach in order to translate automatically the information manipulated during the different phases of the design: specification. analysis, design and implementation.

This paper describes the efforts to implement TCN(train communication network) standardized by IEC for the Korean high speed train. The performance is measured and the problem of worst case communication latency not in data link layer but application layer is showed. In order to reduce the latency, new method is proposed and showed the enhanced performance. For the real-time control network systems like TCN, the end-to-end latency analysis and measurement is one of the most important work to be adopted in real area. In this paper, the latency measurement results are described and a new algorithm is proposed to reduce the latency.

A distributed expert control system (DECSHZ) has been built for a hydrometallurgical zinc process, whose basic steps are leaching, purification and electrolysis. It consists of a central computer management system and three local expert controlsystems, one for each of the basic steps. This paper deals with the design and application of DECSHZ, especially its distributed architecture and main functions;expert control strategies based on rule models and a combination of rule models and steady-state mathematical models: system implementation;and the results of actual runs. The paper discusses modeling and analysis of real-time systems subject to random time delays in the communication network. A new method for analysis of different control schemes is presented. The method is used to evaluate different schemes suggested from the literature. A new scheme, using so-called timestamps, for handling the random time delays is then developed and successfully compared with previous schemes. The new scheme is based on stochastic control theory and a separation property is shown to hold for the optimal controller. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
