A Database-Centric Framework for the Modeling, Simulation, and control of Cyber-Physical systems in the Factory of the Future

The factory of the future scenario asks for new approaches to cope with the incoming challenges and complexity of cyber-physical systems. The role of database management systems is becoming central for control and automation technology in this new industrial scenario. This article proposes database-centric technology and architecture that aims to seamlessly integrate networking, artificial intelligence, and real-time control issues into a unified model of computing. The proposed methodology is also viable for the development of a framework that features simulation and rapid prototyping tools for smart and advanced industrial automation. The full expression of the potentialities in the presented approach is expected in particular for applications where tiny and distributed embedded devices collaborate to a shared computing task of relevant complexity.

Nowadays ROS (Robot Operating System) based platforms have been widely used in state of art robot researches because of providing reliable mechanisms for fast robot development and algorithm reuse. Among them, modular robots are presented as a distributed control System (DCS), in which the data supply and the flow rates must be ensured to guarantee a proper execution. Although ROS network architecture provides a solution for distributed communication, it entails some disadvantages. Real-time constraints assurance and large networks management are some of the main problems. Therefore, this works introduces a ROS-compatible solution for Smart Resource services decoupling on modular robots. Smart Resources are defined as cyber-physical systems that provide high-level operation services. The design and analysis of a new distributed communication architecture for accessing Smart Resource services is addressed along this document. This architecture is called ROS Multi-Peer Architecture (RMPA) and features real-time communication, fully decoupled ROS device execution, and device discovery. So, the integration of RMPA in ROS based developments provides real-time access to the high-level supplied by the Smart Resources. This integration promotes the development of ROS-compatible robot modules based on the Smart Resource design. Next, a set of tests is presented to compare RMPA and ROS communication performance. Moreover, a detailed study of the RMPA performance is also addressed. Finally, as a result of these experiments main advantages and withdrawals of this solution are discussed leading to the establishment of future work and enhancements. Effect driven Evolution: Information systems Architecture for Large Dynamic Organizations

A new approach is proposed to evolutionary information system engineering. The approach aims to provide high-quality support for large and complex socio-technical systems. The main idea is to replace usual developer framework of formal restrictions and tasks with the developer framework of local transparency and high motivation to increase total system quality as far as possible. This idea assumes a monitoring subsystem which records, measures properly and displays the real income of each developer activity to system quality (and evolve with the system itself). The quality indicators should reflect related changes in users satisfaction, resource usage and system transparency, which is necessary for successive selection of promising evolution direction. Another assumption is that system not only allows such a monitoring, but allows local changes to be safely tested and adopted independently (and also in a safe way rejected later if necessary). System should be inconsistency tolerant and extremely truthwise. It may look like mashup of Wikipedia, social network and BPM, but it can't be obtained as combination of them. The sketch of possible innovative system architecture to support all the features together is briefly described.

Cyber Physical systems describe a trend towards more flexible cooperative distributed systems. The levels of the automation pyramid melt to a flattened system. This leads to new requirements regarding the engineering of automation systems as well as tools and algorithms for network and data analysis. At the same time it provides loose coupling with Internet/Web based technologies for interaction and information management. Proven concepts of middleware and distributed systems can fulfill these requirements. A workflow and application model are presented that allow the engineering, implementation and operation of a heterogeneous cyber physical system.

Safety process control of storage facilities represents the trend for down stream industries, due to high costs that traditional operation implies. Also, maintenance of old facilities is very poor and poses hazards and risks to the safety of operators and surrounding communities. Complete safety and security concepts for the process control can mitigate the need for 24/7 safety operation, increase availability and reliability. Knowledge and experience are key factors involved in the studies and analyses that lead to efficient safety instrumented systems design and implementation.
