The performance of a distributedcomputercontrol system that uses communication both for structuring and for knowledge and information transfer between agents is discussed. This agent-centred approach relies on the use of agent templates and interaction rules — resulting in a distributedcomputercontrol system framework that is able to adapt as operating requirements change. Implementation of a distributedcontroller, which simulates a simple conventional controller is described. The effect on performance of this approach, both in terms of processor loading and network traffic is shown to be minimal.

This paper describes a 14-CPU distributed real-time automatic gauge control (AGC) system for POSCO's No. 2 Hot Strip Mill at Pohang works. The AGC system uses the well-established gaugemeter AGC and monitor AGC. The AGC system also compensates for process disturbances to prevent performance deterioration. The AGC computer system has been integrated by using VMEbus computersystems along with a commercial real-time operating system. All the application programs and signal input/output are reasonably distributed over the AGC computer system to maximize reliability and effectiveness. The new AGC system is successfully being used in the No. 2 Hot Strip Mill.

Local area networks are usually used to enhance the efficiency of transmiting data in industrial processes. This paper addresses the problem of delivering real-time messages, both periodic and aperiodic, over fibre channel arbitrated loop. Periodic messages typically have hard real-time constraints whereas aperiodic tasks are delivered based on the best-effort approach. The deadlines of periodic messages are guaranteed by limiting the packet size under the access fairness algorithm defined in fibre channel arbitrated loop or FC-AL. The aperiodic messages are delivered using a global server scheme based on the full duplex communication and transfer state facilitated in FC-AL. The algorithm presented in this paper is optimal in that it guarantees all the deadlines of periodic messages and fully-utilizes network bandwidth. The optimality is expected to apply to many other broadcasting networks, both LANs and field-buses, by considering the global server scheme in their ongoing standardization processes.

It is a simple protocol, with reduced overhead, designed for stations with reduced intelligence level, using radio links. The protocol has elements situated in the levels 1, 2 and 7 of the OSI architecture. The level 7 service primitives implement functions specific for process monitoring and control and are all confirmed. They work on data objects as variables, domains, programs and events. This paper presents a hardware architecture for supporting distributed realtime operating systems. It proposes the use of dedicated hardware units for running task scheduling and communication, in order to alleviate the load of the processor responsible for running the application tasks. These hardware units also compute the execution time of application tasks and other statistics that can be taken into account by more elaborated scheduling algorithms. The proposal enhances the overall system predictability. Since the proposal is based on low-cost microcontrollers, it represents a cost-effective proposal for developing low-cost distributed real-time systems.

An intelligent control architecture for autonomous robot systems must be modular, scaleable, extendible, and adaptable to the available capacity of computercontrolsystems. The computer industry has been revolutionised by the advent of the RISC processor, which employs a very simple instruction set. This paper proposes a similar approach to the algorithm set of distributedcontrolsystems called 'Reduced Algorithm Set control' or RASC. Current algorithm sets are complex to understand, difficult to develop and full of hidden problems, This increases the difficulties in implementing complex control strategies. RASC is a simple but robust standard algorithm set providing all the facilities required to configure even the most complex of control schemes. This paper defines the RASC algorithm set and describes some implementation examples.
