Device Descriptions are necessary for the integration of intelligent field devices in commissioning & maintenance tools, engineering systems or MES / ERP systems. Device Descriptions comprise of device models and presentations based on the models (e.g. ASCII files). The XML concept may help to enlarge the application scope of Device Description because it is becoming one of the basic technologies of the fast growing internet and various e-engineering activities. Other realisations have to be based on the same device model (e.g. component interfaces). These issues are addressed from a modelling and implementation / realisation point of view.

This paper describes an architecture for mobile robots that is suitable for teleoperation. The architecture is hybrid and has three levels: a reactive level, a deliberative level and an interface level. Reactive level is distributed and it is made up of sensor nodes and controllers. On the other hand, deliberative level establishes the knowledge and the reasoning capability to the robot. This deliberative level uses reactive level (sensor and actuator values) through the interface level. Interface level is made up of a communication system that allows local and remote access to the robot from any deliberative node. The architecture has been implemented as a case study in the YAIR robot, enabling its teleoperation from a remote node using Windows CE.

This paper describes a general architecture to access remotely to manufacturing plants through Internet-like networks. The operations that remote users may perform over the plant are analysed in order to identify the different user profiles to be defined as well as the set of objects that constitute the so-called Virtual Plant Model. This Model resides in the Application Server which is responsible for maintaining an image of the real plant state that can be accessed by remote users. When a remote user logs on, the Application Server creates a View Model of the plant through which operations on the plant are performed. The paper discusses the use of UML diagrams that may be used in order to outline the architecture from different points of view.

Containers are currently used in the transport of products because of the point-to-point service they offer. By using specialised cranes, operations in maritime transport and land transport can be achieve quickly. To optimise operation costs, the whole management of the terminal is computerised proportionally with the complexity of the problem. This paper studies the problem from the point of view of the integration of different technologies supporting communication, data management, control, and human interface. This integration of heterogeneous intelligent components is made possible by means of a communication system that is the base of an object oriented distributed system. Using this system, "operation agents" that gain access to information in a high level and transparent way can be developed.

A device for ubiquitous computing called Intelligent Data Carrier (IDC) was developed, which enables active informational interaction between robots and its operating environment and provides the environment with intelligent information processing functionality. In this paper we present the software tool VEDA for modelling and verification of distributedcontrolsystems. The tool provides an integrated environment for formal, model-based verification of the execution control of function blocks following the new international standard IEC61499. The modelling is performed in closed-loop way using manually developed models of plants and automatically generated models of controllers.
