This paper investigates control design of aero-engine systems by using distributed architecture. In distributed control architecture, delay is inevitable due to the network transmission. to address such problems, a feasible aero-engine controller reconstruction/design method is proposed based on distributed architecture with time delays. First, the causes of network-induced delay are analyzed, and the engine system is remodeled by augmenting the state variables to transform it into a time delay-free augmentation system. In addition, considering the multi-variable control requirements of aero-engines, an augmented linear quadratic regulator is investigated to reduce the effects of time delays on engine performance. Secondly, for a certain type of aero-engines, the aero-engine distributed control simulation platform is built in the Truetime toolbox accordingly, which is universal to verify varied controllers of aero-engines under distributed architecture. Finally, the proposed method is simulated and verified on the platform. The results show that the designed controller can not only guarantee the system is stable, but also ensure the desired performance of the aero-engine in the presence of persistent delay. Moreover, the good anti-interference performance is also guaranteed.

To enhance safety of basic process control using traditional 4-20 mA current loops with/without transmitting a return signal of actual actuator position back to a host, this article presents a useful technique to provide fault-state and fault-recovery actions in four patterns. The proposed technique is a design of control drawings configured in a distributed control system (DCS) host for conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) loops with/without feedforward path to improve actions of the control loops in response to sensor and actuator failures. The configuration design based on functions of failure status propagation and failure mode shedding for eight control drawings that contain software function blocks for running on the DCS host modeled CENTUM VP is described. Simulation results by employing the DCS virtual test function verify that all designed control drawings can successfully perform the desired fault-state and fault-recovery actions for process safety enhancement.

A Comparison Study of Operator Preference and Performance for Analog Versus Digital Turbine control systems in control Room Modernization

An operator-in-the-loop study was conducted in support of control room modernization for a nuclear power plant. The study featured a benchmark comparison on a glass-top simulator of three variants of a turbine control system (TCS): (1) the existing analog TCS, (2) a proposed stand-alone digital TCS with two displays, and (3) the digital TCS with the addition of a third display consisting of a system overview screen. TCS prototypes were developed to allow formative evaluation of operator preferences and performance during realistic turbine scenarios in the full-scope simulator. The study revealed that completion of turbine startup was several minutes faster with the digital TCS variants than with the conventional analog TCS. Eye-tracking fixations were more widely distributed in the overview versus stand-alone TCS condition, suggesting the overview screen was cueing reactor operators to verify values across the boards. There was no significant difference in workload or situation awareness across the three interfaces. Reviewing key plant parameters showed smoother transitions during load-following for the digital-versus-analog TCS. Despite some performance advantages for the digital TCS variants, operators preferred the existing analog TCS. Openended responses suggested this finding may be more an artifact of familiarity than a reflection of dissatisfaction with the new TCS. The study provides compelling evidence that the new digital TCS was used successfully by the operators, suggesting high usability for the digital TCS design. Further advantages were realized through the addition of the system overview screen to provide crews with at-a-glance indicators of key turbine parameters.

A dual ion beam radiation facility which provides co-implantation of heavy ion beams from a 1.7 MV accelerator and gaseous ions from an indigenously built 400 kV accelerator has been developed. Various aspects of the dual beam irradiation facility such as the beam optics design, electronics and instrumentation comprising of a distributed control system and details of the experimental end station have been discussed. Experiments to determine essential parameters for the conduct of dual irradiation such as the beam energy spread, the spatial and the depth overlap of both beams have been carried out. For a dpa rate of 1 x 10(-3) dpa sec(-1) the maximum He:dpa rate achieved using this system is 50 appm dpa(-1). This facility enables us to study the effect of a combination of large levels of transmutant helium and displacement damage (dpa) on the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of structural materials, He/dpa ratios on swelling in advanced alloys and co-operative effects of nuclear and electronic energy losses in nuclear structural materials.

In recent years, classification societies have tightened their rules and regulations for marine automation systems due to increases in the size and passenger numbers of newly built vessels. Tightened class demands and increased costs of ensuring quality have created a need for improving engineering quality control and testing tools. A simulation model of the vessel automation system enables real-life testing of the software without the expensive, large-scale hardware installation of the system. The aim of this thesis is to develop a software-in-the-loop testing environment for testing typical functions of the Vessel Management system (VMS) by coupling the WinMOD process simulator to the ABB system 800xA distributed control system (DCS) through an OPC DA server. The thesis asks, among other things, what kinds threats and benefits are associated with implementing and using the simulation in VMS testing and how the testing methods can be improved. A working simulation was developed for ABB Marine & Ports, LPG Automation and control Solutions Finland. Based on a literature review on marine regulations, PLC simulations in industry and interviews with the industry practitioners at ABB Marine, the main threats are evaluated to be difficulty of use, unclear user interface and faulty behavior of the simulation. The simulated environment is implemented manually on a per-project basis and requires some knowledge of both the system to be simulated and WinMOD. The benefits include potentially saving valuable commissioning and the ability to demonstrate parts of a working system for customers utilizing the real user interface of the system. The threats were largely avoided or their impact mitigated thanks to the flexibility of both MAPL, ABB’s automation library, and WinMOD. Analysis of the finished WinMOD simulation found it suitable for manual testing and customer demonstrations and further development by expanding the number of simulated functions is recommended.

A Decomposition-Based Development Method for Industrial control systems

Industrial control systems (ICSs), especially distributed control systems (DCSs), are usually composed of several subsystems. Each subsystem is controlled by a control unit such as a programmable logic controller (PLC) or a micro-controller and collaborates with other subsystems via the field bus, Ethernet, or other communication links. In the traditional development process, engineers program for each PLC separately and skillfully orchestrate the collaboration among subsystems, which is difficult and errorprone. The larger the scale of the ICS is, the higher the complexity of the collaboration is, and the more errorprone the development process is. In this paper, we propose a decomposition-based development method for distributed ICSs to reduce the difficulty of developing distributed ICSs whose subsystems cooperate with each other. First, we present a general event-triggered specification language named Industrial Modeling Collaboration Language (IMCL) for modeling ICSs;the language allows describing system functions and physical resources in one unified model. Second, we provide an approach for decomposing the complex system model into multiple fine-grained and interactive subsystem models. Specifically, under given resource constraints, we propose an automatic decomposition and collaboration algorithm based on the IMCL model to meet the original functional requirements. In this way, engineers can develop distributed control systems without considering the underlying complex interaction mechanisms. We present a case study to demonstrate it.

Adaptive-based sliding mode control scheme is developed to solve the problem of mismatched uncertainty that exists in communication channels and external disturbance for a class of distributed large-scale systems. A linear sliding manifold is adopted to guarantee asymptotic stability of each subsystems and achieve the global robustness. Meanwhile, by adjusting the parameters estimation of adjustable gains via proposed adaptive scheme, the upper bound of the unknown uncertainty can be obtained. Then an distributed adaptive sliding mode controller is designed combining with the relative information of neighboring subsystems. It is shown that the presented controller has the capability to achieve the asymptotic stability of each closed-loop subsystems via Lyapunov theory. Finally, a simulation example applied to a network of two quad-rotor dynamical systems is given to exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

A good grade coke produces highest thermal energy and it is highly efficient in hot metal reduction. In order to concentrate the carbon in coke, the coke making process involves carbonisation of coal to high temperature (1100 degrees C) in an oxygen-free atmosphere. There is always a need to efficiently automate the coke oven operations as much as possible. In order to improve the level of control and management of coke oven, the research on intelligent control system is carried out. In modern advanced control system of coke oven, the control scheme of combination of feedback and feed-forward merged with management is widely utilised. The integrated management and control system of coke oven is introduced systematically, including the production plan and scheduling management (dynamic scheduling) and heating control system (mathematical modelling) i.e. evaluating battery temperature, intelligent combustion control system and the pressure control of gas collector of coke oven battery.

The dynamic control allocation algorithm is proposed for a class of distributed control systems with hierarchical structure, in order to solve the real-time cooperative control problem in the case of sensor failure occurred in the subsystems. The augmented state-space model of the distributed control system is first established for the control allocation design, by using the dynamic model of sensor faults. According to robust control theory, the constrained and convex optimization is then formulated into linear-matrix-inequality form to design the gain matrix of the control allotter, which can be computed by various well-developed algorithms. Thus the suppression of sensor faults in the subsystem is realized and the expected cooperative control objective is achieved. Simulations on the four-corner leveling control system of an advanced hydraulic press demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control allocation algorithm.

In order to realize the 200 keV negative-ion-based neutral beam injector (N-NBI) prototype of China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor, an acceleration grid power supply (AGPS) is under development. Adopting a single stage inverter type topology, the AGPS is rated at 200 kV/25A for 3600 s. Here, the paper presents a distributed control system based on PCI extensions for instrumentation (PXI) and field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology, which can fulfill the high requirements in terms of the control strategy, malfunction protection, integration with the upper control system and real-time monitoring, highlighting the operation sequence both in normal and abnormal scenarios. In addition, a 10 kV/6A AGPS prototype has been realized to verify the control system. The distributed control system can respond to the interlock signal from the upper controller within 2 mu s while disabling the inverter within 20 mu s in case of an abnormal current or voltage output status.
