This paper presents the development and the industrial implementation of a virtual sensor (soft-sensor) in the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) production process. This soft-sensor, based on a feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN), was primarily used to provide on-line estimates of the PET viscosity, which is necessary for process control purposes. The ANN-based soft-sensor (ANN-SS) was also used for providing redundant measurements of the viscosity that could be compared to the results obtained from the process viscometer. It was shown that the proposed ANN-SS was able to adequately infer the polymer viscosity, in such a way so as this soft-sensor could be used in the real-time process control strategy. The proposed controlsystem has Successfully been applied in servo and regulatory problems, thus allowing an effective and feasible operation of the industrial plant. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. For periodic real-time task in distributed control system, a novel fault-tolerant scheduling algorithm is presented based on duplication technique. The algorithm fuses active backup-copy technique and passive backup-copy technique and overlapping backup-copy technique in order to adapt task demand in different case. The method for judging the schedulability of task set is given. The heuristic task assigning algorithm based on first-fit method and minimizing “worst case completion time” is given. Finally, simulation experiments are carried out to prove the feasibility and effectiveness of the algorithm.

The most obvious benefit from networked sensors in distributed control system is the reduction of cables, which means savings in cost and easiness in deployment and maintenance. Some current available sensor standards and protocols are complicate and cost for most industrial applications and low performance for real-time controlsystems. In this paper we propose a light-weight CAN-like sensor network protocol for real-time distributed control system with some unique features. Based on a novel event/action model, the protocol provides a resilient and scalable application layer that is independent with sensor developers and sensor users. The data link layer supports both event and master/slave communication mode, which greatly improves the real-time performance. An FPGA-based reference implementation of protocol stack is also validated on a Cyclone II development boards.

IEC 61499 ushers in a new trend of software development in the area of Industrial Process Measurement and controlsystem (IPMCS). This new standard simplifies the development of distributed IPMCS applications through inclusion of re-usability, encapsulation and modularity. IEC 61499, due to its close resemblance with Object-Oriented (OO) paradigm also paves the way to integrate modeling techniques like UML into the development process of the distributed IPMCS applications. Yet a remarkable challenge is there to integrate or re-design the systems, elements or components designed using a monolithic language like the ones on Programmable Logic controllers (PLCs). In this work it is attempted to share the experiences faced while attempting to migrate a PLC controlled centralized laboratory application into an IEC 61499 compliant distributedcontrol application. The targeted distributed control system consists of network-enabled controllers where the IEC 61499 compliant control sub-applications should run. It needs to be mentioned that the development process did not start from analysis of the specification of the instrument to be controlled but rather from a formal specification of it written in Signal Interpreted Petri Nets (SIPN).

Obsolescence presents great challenge to Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) and plant simulators around the world. Old designs will have to be modified or replaced by new designs, in order to simplify maintenance, increase availability and meet ever-increasing operational and training requirements. controlsystem upgrade and distributed control system (DCS) design for both old plants and new builds have become the center of interest. This paper describes a new Ethernet Bus Interface controller (eBIC) used in the Input/Output (I/O) system of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) simulator in Canada. The reliability of the eBIC is evaluated, and compared with the reliability of the existing Bus Interface controller (BIC). It is shown that the predicted failure rate of the new eBIC is five times lower than that of the existing system. This raises the level of confidence in the new design. The reasons for this improvement are also discussed.

In this paper, we address the issue of the stability of distributed engine controlsystems under communication constraints and, in particular, for packet dropouts. We propose a control design procedure, labeled decentralized distributed full-authority digital engine control and based on a two-level decentralized control framework. We show that the packet dropping margin, which is a measure of stability robustness under packet dropouts, is largely dependent on the closed-loop controller structure and that, in particular, a block-diagonal structure is more desirable. Thus, we design a controller in a decentralized framework to improve the packet dropping margin. The effect of different mathematical partitioning on the packet dropping margin is studied. The proposed methodology is applied to an F100 gas turbine engine model, which clearly demonstrates the usefulness of decentralization in improving the stability of distributedcontrol under packet dropouts.
