Anew formal approach to safe response time upper bound evaluation for distributed control systems using dioid algebra

This paper presents an approach to computing a safe upper bound of the response time of distributed control System (DCS). From a graphical model of live autonomous Timed Event Graphs (TEGs) with asynchronous links and weights, we draw algebraic representations of the time/event dynamics using the .Aax in [[gamma, delta]] dioid. By introducing scalers and two operators for handling batching or multiplying events, we are able to calculate the trajectories and transfer functions. With deterministic and worst-case hypotheses, the worst delays induced by the model is then computed, composing an upper bound for the response time. We validate the method through a numerical application, confronted to experimental measurements. The method is modular, can be automated and is easily used to any DCS modelled with TEGs.

This paper presents results and commentary on the design of a back-calculation anti-windup PID controller at an open-pool research reactor. The design and analysis was performed offline. The target for the control design was the reactors pre-existing qualified distributed control system, hence the control solution was limited in scope to the existing control block algorithms. This posed some technical constraints which are discussed. The continued relevance of PID control in larger scale industrial systems including safety systems is also discussed.

This paper discusses the need for, and methods of achieving, survivability in distributed control system networks. It is applicable to areas such as avionics, marine systems and industrial plants. Basic survival strategies are discussed in the context of specific network topologies, with emphasis on system design aspects. The strengths and weaknesses of the various approaches are discussed, together with the requirements and constraints of practical systems. Based on these, a general template for a survivable LAN is defined, accompanied by a set of recommendations for implementing specific survivability features.

This paper considers secure design in distributed control systems to ensure the detection of stealthy integrity attacks. distributed control systems consist of many heterogeneous components, such as sensors, controllers, and actuators and may contain several independent agents. The presence of many components and agents in a system increases the attack surfaces for potential adversaries, making distributed control systems vulnerable to malicious behavior. The goal of this paper is to consider the design of distributed control systems to ensure the deterministic detection of attacks. To do this, we leverage existing results which relate the deterministic detection of a fixed set of malicious nodes to structural left invertibility. We extend the notion of structural left invertibility to consider attacks from all possible sets of malicious nodes using vertex separators. Vertex separators are then used to solve optimization problems which aim to minimize communication networks while also ensuring that a resource limited adversary cannot generate perfect attacks. Optimal bounds on communication and sensing are obtained and polynomial time design algorithms are provided.

Coloured Petri Nets for Temporal Performance Evaluation of distributed control systems-Application to a FIFO Queue

Temporal performances (like response time) of distributed control systems must he measurable for critical systems. The delay and reliability requirements require us to develop an exhaustive method to evaluate these performances through the most accurate models, such as (max,+) algebra combined with timed event graphs. Among the common mechanisms encountered in a distributed control system, the FIFO policy remains one of the mast used and cannot be modeled with timed event graphs. We show that the formalism of timed coloured Petri nets described in the (max,+) algebra can model the FIFO queue of a Programmable Logic controller communication module. We also aim to reveal some exciting features of coloured Petri nets when analytically evaluating temporal performances. We present, therefore, a Timed Coloured Petri net modeling the emptying of a FIFO queue with a periodic task, and the formulas of delays associated with the induced system of (max, +) equations. We also test the consistency of our hounds in a numerical application of our model with positive results.

Dissipativity-Preserving Model Reduction for Large-Scale distributed control systems

We propose a dissipativity-preserving structured model reduction method for distributed control systems. As a fundamental tool to develop structured model reduction, we first establish dissipativity-preserving model reduction for general linear systems on the basis of a singular perturbation approximation. To this end, by deriving a tractable expression of singular perturbation models, we characterize dissipativity preservation in terms of a projection-like transformation of storage functions, and we show that the resultant approximation error is relevant to the sum of neglected eigenvalues of an index matrix. Next, utilizing this dissipativity-preserving model reduction, we develop a structured controller reduction method for distributed control systems. The major significance of this method is to preserve the spatial distribution of dissipative controllers and to provide an a priori bound for the performance degradation of closed-loop systems in terms of the H-2-norm. The efficiency of the proposed method is verified through a numerical example of vibration suppression control for interconnected second-order systems.

The concepts for pertinent network parameters are introduced, and an analytical base for system design is established. A simulation methodology has been developed for performance evaluation of real-time control system networks for distributed dynamical processes (e.g. autonomous manufacturing), electric power and chemical plants, and aircraft and spacecraft. The network-induced delays, resulting from data latencies, data loss, and missynchronism between system components, degrade the dynamic performance of the controlled process and are a source of potential instability. The impact of delays induced by different network access protocols on the control system performance is investigated. The results of combined discrete-event and continuous-time simulation are presented.

A design methodology for distributed control systems to optimize performance in the presence of time delays

When a control system is implemented in a distributed fashion, with multiple processors communicating over a network, both the communication delays associated with the network and the computation delays associated with the processing time can degrade the system's performance. In this case, the performance of the system may depend not only on the performance of the individual components but also on their interaction and cooperation. The approach taken in this paper assumes that the control has been designed without taking into account the network architecture. A theoretical framework is presented which allows the effect of time delays on the mechanical performance of the system to be precisely modelled, and these models are used to determine the optimal network architecture for the given control system. A design example of a two-axis contouring system is presented.

In this paper, we consider a diffusion process pertaining to a distributed control system formed by a chain of n subsystems (with n = 2), where a random perturbation enters only in the first subsystem and is then subsequently transmitted to the other subsystems. We also assume that, for any l is an element of {2, ..., n}, the distributed control system formed by the first l subsystems (i.e., from the first subsystem up to the lth subsystem) satisfies an appropriate Hormander condition. As a result, the diffusion process is degenerate, in the sense that the backward operator associated with it is a degenerate parabolic equation. In particular, we consider the following two problems: (i) We provide an asymptotic estimate for the exit probability with which the diffusion process (corresponding to a particular subsystem) exits from a given bounded open domain during a certain time interval;the approach for such an asymptotic estimate basically relies on the interpretation of the exit probability function as a value function for a family of stochastic control problems that are associated with the underlying chain of distributed control system with small random perturbations. (ii) We establish a connection between the minimum exit rate with which the diffusion process exits from the given bounded open domain and the principal eigenvalue for the infinitesimal generator with zero boundary conditions. Such a connection also allows us to derive a family of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations for which we provide a verification theorem that shows the validity of the corresponding optimal control problems. Moreover, we provide an estimate for the attainable exit probability of the diffusion process with respect to a set of admissible optimal Markov controls for the optimal control problems.

Wired and wireless internetworking technologies are rapidly integrating, leaving distributed control systems (DCS) increasingly susceptible to cyberattacks. Access control frameworks can contain and mitigate the impact of cyberattacks, but existing solutions often leave holes that can undermine a plant's security. This article identifies key challenges in creating a complete, manageable access control framework for DCS and presents a model architecture that can ensure that each access is checked against policies that adhere to the least-privilege principle. The proposed architecture facilitates centralized, plant-wide policy management and protection of all connected field devices.
