distributed product development is becoming increasingly prevalent in a number of industries. We study how the global distribution of product development impacts the profit-maximizing product line that a firm offers. Specifically, we formulate a model to understand the linkage between cost arbitrage as a driver of distributed development and consequent market implications such as customer perceived quality loss to remotely developed products. Analysis of the model reveals that a firm should expand the product line for a development-intensive good only at intermediate values of cost advantage and quality loss. We modify the base model to include development capacity constraints as a driver of distributed development and find that the results are robust to this change. Our analysis affirms the need for product managers to incorporate the implications of distributed development in making their product line design decision.

Software companies frequently customize and extend product lines in multiple projects concurrently to quickly deliver solutions to customers. Engineers use a distributed and feature-oriented development process, commonly supported by version control systems to track implementation-level changes. For instance, feature branches are widely used to add new or modify existing features. However, when merging back features to the product line, the information about feature-to-code mappings is usually lost. Furthermore, the granularity of merging is limited to branches, making it hard to extract and merge selected individual features from one product to another. This paper thus presents feature-oriented clone and pull operations for distributed development, which are implemented in the FORCE2 platform. Our evaluation uses variants of the ArgoUML product line to investigate the correctness and performance of our approach. The results show that the feature-oriented operations work with high precision and recall for different cases of feature interactions, also when feature implementations are scattered across many locations in the source code. The performance measurements demonstrate that the operations can be integrated in the typical workflows of engineers.

A code smell is a symptom in the source code that helps to identify a design problem. Several tools for detecting and ranking code smells according to their criticality to the system have been developed. However, existing works assume a centralized development approach, which does not consider systems being developed in a distributed fashion. The main problem in a distributed group of developers is that a tool cannot always ensure a global vision of (smells of) the system, and thus inconsistencies among the rankings provided by each developer are likely to happen. These inconsistencies often cause unnecessary refactorings and might not focus the whole team on the critical smells system-wide. Along this line, this work proposes a multi-agent tool, called D-JSpIRIT, which helps individual developers to reach a consensus on their smell rankings by means of distributed optimization techniques.

Scalable methodologies for distributed development of logic-based convergent medical terminology

As the size and complexity of medical terminologies increase, terminology modelers are increasingly hampered by lack of tools and methods to manage the development process. This paper presents our use and ongoing evaluation of a description-logic classifier to support cognitive scalability of the underlying terminology and our enhancements to that classifier to support concurrent development utilizing semantics-based concurrency control methods. Our enhancements, collectively referred to as the Galapagos, consist of several applications that take locally-developed terminology enhancements from multiple sites, identify conflicting design decisions, support the modelers' reconciliation of the conflicting designs, and efficiently disseminate updates tailored for locally enhanced terminologies. We have tested our ideas through concurrent evolutionary enhancement of SNOMED International at three Kaiser Permanente regions and the Mayo Clinic. We have found that the underlying environment has met our design objectives, and supports semantic-based concurrency control, and identification and resolution of conflicting design decisions.

distributed software development has become a common reality with the advent of off-shore development and the need to be close to markets. Also, the dynamic nature of the environment in which businesses operate suggests the use of agile development methods. Whereas distributed software development requires the use of formal processes advocated by plan-driven approaches, rapidly changing environments are appropriate candidates for the use of agile development methods. This tension in agile distributed development poses conflicting demands between alignment and adaptability in the software development process. We conducted a multisite case study of three projects that use agile distributed development to examine how these organizations developed contextual ambidexterity the ability to pursue conflicting demands simultaneously. Our findings, presented as a conceptual framework, indicate that conflicting demands between alignment and adaptability posed by agile distributed development can be addressed by a set of balanced practices that shape performance management and social context two important antecedents of contextual ambidexterity.

Employers find that students are graduating from engineering programs without the necessary competence and know-how to be successful in industry, often lacking sufficient communication and collaboration skills imperative for developing new products. Modern product development, from development and design through to production, planning, and marketing is moving increasingly to the digital domain as a result of technological progress and increasing pressure to deliver more complex and more customized products in less time at the lowest cost. The engineers of tomorrow must be able to communicate and collaborate effectively and efficiently using technologies and software, such as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) or Engineering (CAE), Product Data Management (PDM) or Enterprise resource planning (ERP) tools. In an effort to ensure that graduating students can successfully apply what they have learned in their engineering lectures to real-world engineering problems, the Lower Saxony Institutes of Technology (NTH) has sponsored a project "Computer-aided Product development" that involves students in distributed development design projects that mirror what they will come across in industry. Engineering students from the Leibniz University of Hannover (Institut fur Produktentwicklung und Geratebau), the Technical University of Clausthal (Institut fur Maschinenwesen), and the Technical University of Braunschweig (Institut fur Konstruktionstechnik) work together on semester-long projects that require them to use engineering tools that are not often taught in typical engineering classes but crucial for product development in industry, exposing current shortcomings in the engineering curriculum. The project has been run twice, once with "closed" student groups at each site, each group responsible for a sub-assembly and communicating with students at other locations with regard to sub-assembly interfaces, and a second time with students from multiple locations making up "mixed" teams.

distributed software development raises new software engineering challenges resulting from the difficulty of making several teams cooperate across different countries, time zones and cultures. These obstacles can lead to critical delays or even failures. One of the most effective techniques for overcoming them is to improve the quality of software specifications. Our experience with a distributed software project in an educational environment suggests that Design by Contract techniques provide a promising solution.

Today distributed development depend on an ever-growing plethora of tools that provide a continual stream of updates and place developers into a situation of channel overload and information fragmentation. In this paper, we present our initial work on the definition of a model, named hub-and-spoke, for a loosely-coupled integration of development tools that can help developers cope with these issues, while also increasing their overall situational awareness.
