Nonlinear Mean-Square Power Sharing Control for AC Microgrids Under distributed event detection

This article proposes a nonlinear distributed cooperative control scheme that can regulate the power output to achieve efficient utilization of renewable energy in ac microgirds, which ensures mean-square autonomous proportional power sharing over a nonlinear microgird system via a sparse cyber network subject to noisy disturbance and limited bandwidth constraints. The cyber networks are exposed to noisy disturbances and limited bandwidth constraints that terribly reduce the stability and quality of the whole system. To eliminate the adverse effects of noisy disturbances and limited bandwidth constraints, we propose a robust distributed control strategy designed by using partial feedback linearization for the dynamical nonlinear model of a microgrid system. Moreover, a distributed event detection mechanism with noise-dependent threshold is adopted to update the control signals with the consideration of unnecessary data communication reduction. Through adopting stochastic stability theory and Lyapunov function, the stability and convergence analysis of the proposed dynamic distributed event-detection conditions considering noise interferences is derived. As a result, the suggested method decreases the sensitivity of the system to failures and increases its reliability. Finally, a modified IEEE 34-bus test system in MATLAB/Simulink is utilized to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller design scheme.

Deployment and evaluation of a fully applicable distributed event detection system in Wireless Sensor Networks

Versatility and real world applicability are key features of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In order to achieve these benefits we have to face the challenges of high practical relevance during application. We deploy and evaluate the concrete example of a fence monitoring task to reveal how our distributed event detection system is able to perform under real application conditions. The challenge is to bring both opposing aspects-high event detection accuracy and long service life-into one applicable ubiquitous system. If sensor nodes compose parts of events cooperatively, a comprehensive event assessment with low energy demands is possible. We propose a classifier based distributed event detection system consisting of two frameworks. The evaluation framework delivers a classification model and enables the theoretical evaluation of a given training set. The distributed event detection framework subsequently applies the classification model to assess, filter and classify events within the network. We evaluate our system by training and detecting events with our WSN composed of 49 nodes which are integrated in construction site fence elements. We compare four different data application scenarios with varying data processing concepts and varying network sizes to analyze the resulting communication load as well as the system lifetime. We compare the results of our evaluation framework with the results of our application to show that the evaluation framework reflects the real world deployment results in a credible way. We show the full applicability of our approach by comparing the resulting increased event detection accuracy against our previous work. Compared to other information fusion scenarios, our distributed event detection system reduces energy consumption beyond a communication distance of two hops which yields a prolonged lifetime of the network while additionally achieving an improved event detection accuracy. In order to avoid transmitting raw data to a base station, sensor nodes are trained to cooperatively recognize deployment-specific events based on the data sampled by their sensors. As both training and event detection are performed without the need for central coordination or processing, only information about the detected event needs to be reported.

event detection is a major issue for applications of wireless sensor networks. In order to detect an event, a sensor network has to identify which application-specific incident has occurred based on the raw data gathered by individual sensor nodes. In this context, an event may be anything from a malfunction of monitored machinery to an intrusion into a restricted area. The goal is to provide high-accuracy event detection at minimal energy cost in order to maximize network lifetime. In this paper, we present a system for collaborative event detection directly on the sensor nodes. The system does not require a base station for centralized coordination or processing, and is fully trainable to recognize different classes of application-specific events. Communication overhead is reduced to a minimum by processing raw data directly on the sensor nodes and only reporting which events have been detected. The detection accuracy is evaluated using a 100-node sensor network deployed as a wireless alarm system on the fence of a real-world construction site.

Recent technology advancement has resulted in optimistic view toward the practicability of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in the context of Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber Physical Systems (CPS). However, to realize their full benefits in a broad range of commercial applications, there are still many technical hitches that need to be overcome. In this paper, we address three vital technical issues in a WSN: (1) distributed event detection, (2) distributed parameter estimation, and (3) network's robustness. We make use of a recent development in social networks called small world characteristics and propose novel fault-resilient distributed detection and estimation methods over a small world WSN (SW-WSN). In particular, a small world WSN has been developed by mounting antenna arrays on sensor nodes for the purpose of beamforming. A low-complexity optimization problem for beamforming is formulated by introducing a new parameter Flow between node pairs. Additionally, a new beamforming algorithm is also proposed which optimizes this flow, leading to optimal beam parameters. The proposed method yields a lower average path length and a higher average clustering coefficient of the network. Experiments are conducted using simulations and real node deployments over a WSN testbed. Analysis and experimental results obtained demonstrate that the proposed SW-WSN model achieves faster convergence rates for both distributed detection and distributed estimation while being resilient to node failures when compared to results obtained using state-of-the-art methods.

In this paper, we consider two important problems for distributed fault-tolerant detection in wireless sensor networks: 1) how to address both the noise-related measurement error and sensor fault simultaneously in fault-tolerant detection and 2) how to choose a proper neighborhood size n for a sensor node in fault correction such that the energy could be conserved. We propose a fault-tolerant detection scheme that explicitly introduces the sensor fault probability into the optimal event detection process. We mathematically show that the optimal detection error decreases exponentially with the increase of the neighborhood size. Experiments with both Bayesian and Neyman-Pearson approaches in simulated sensor networks demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is able to achieve better detection and better balance between detection accuracy and energy usage. Our work makes it possible to perform energy-efficient fault-tolerant detection in a wireless sensor network.

BigEye: detection and Summarization of Key Global events From distributed Crowdsensed Data

Social media postings using smartphones (referred to as crowd-sensed data) can often facilitate real-time detection of key physical events in applications like disaster recovery or in smart cities. These postings also often contain visual content (e.g., images) that can be used to obtain zoomed-in views of such events. These crowd-sensed data are likely to be of large volume and distributed across a plurality of producers (e.g., cloudlets). Blindly transferring this large volume of raw data from the producers to a consumer will induce information overload and consume very high bandwidth. The problem is exacerbated in scenarios with limited bandwidth (e.g., after a disaster). In this article, we design BigEye, a novel framework that only transfers very limited data from the distributed producers to a central summarizer, and yet supports: 1) highly accurate detection and 2) concise visual summarization of key events of global interest. In realizing BigEye, we address several challenges including: 1) identifying events that have the highest global interest via the transfer of appropriate limited metadata from the producers to the summarizer;2) reconciling metadata that could be inconsistent across the producers;and 3) the timely retrieval of visual summaries of the key events given bandwidth constraints. We show that BigEye achieves the same accuracy in detecting key events, as a system, where all data are available centrally while transferring only 1% of the raw data volume. Compared to the baseline approaches, BigEye's parallelized transfer of visual content reduces the average delay by 67%.

It is important to detect multi simultaneous events in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). WSNs are usually consist of tiny sensor nodes which are often deployed in harsh environment and facing the fault conditions. In this paper, a fault tolerant distributed two-event detection method based on the Bayesian approach is proposed for WSNs. In addition, a data fusion algorithm is employed to involve the statuses of the neighborhoods in the decision of each sensing point. The proposed distributed method is used to detect two events simultaneously in a WSN with 200 sensors that distributed randomly. Also some random faults occur in all sensing nodes. Results show the accuracy and significant performance of the proposed two events detection approach.

This paper attempts to identify the reliability of detection of licensed primary transmission based on cooperative sensing in cognitive radio networks. With a parallel fusion network model, the correlation issue of the received signals between the nodes in the worst case is derived. Leveraging the property of false sensing data due to malfunctioning or malicious software, the optimizing strategy, namely Fault-Tolerant algorithm for distributed detection (FTDD) is proposed, and quantitative analysis of false alarm reliability and detection probability under the scheme is presented. In particular, the tradeoff between licensed transmissions and user cooperation among nodes is discussed. Simulation experiments are also used to evaluate the fusion performance under practical settings. The model and analytic results provide useful tools for reliability analysis for other wireless decentralization-based applications (e.g., those involving robust spectrum sensing).

Debugging parallel programs is one of the most tedious jobs in programming scalable multiprocessor architectures. Due to the distributed resources of these machines, programming is often architecture dependent. Most development tools still reflect this dependency even during the analysis phase of parallel programs. This paper presents the distributed debugger DETOP, which offers a global name space and hides architectural features like the mapping of processes. DETOP is part of the integrated tool environment TOPSYS implemented on IPSC hypercubes, networks of SPARCstations and partly on Transputer and PowerPC based systems.
