Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) can experience problems (anomalies) during deployment, due to dynamic environmental factors or node hardware and software failures. These anomalies demand reliable detection strategies for supporting long term and/or large scale WSN deployments. Several strategies have been proposed for detecting specific WSN anomaly, yet there is still a need for more comprehensive anomaly detection strategies that jointly address network and node level anomalies. Intellectus methodology [23], [24], [25] build a tool that detected a new limited set of faults: sensor nodes may dynamically fail, be isolate and reboot and local topology control. These bugs are difficult to diagnose because the only externally visible characteristic is that no data is seen at the sink, from one or more nodes. This paper evaluate Intellectus methodology by different experiment in a Testbed network. In fact, Intellectus is be able to detect the injected fault and assess different scenarios of topology change.

Various sensor network studies have reported instances of faults in WSN. This paper focuses specifically on two types of faults, those caused by sensor node crashes resulting from power depletion or unreliable hardware and those caused by unpredictable link connectivity due to unstable wireless links. Intellectus [31] addresses these faults through the use of a group-detection mechanism;whereby neighbouring nodes monitor each other facilitating the detection of crash failures. Link instability leads to constant changing in the routing path. Intellectus nodes maintain state information about self and their neighbourhood and provide a monitoring capability for connectivity and topology change. This paper evaluates the Intellectus methodology through the use of a testbed;during the experiments two parameters, namely transmit power and the radio channel are changed at run time in order to create controlled faults and managed topology change. Intellectus is able to detect injected faults and recognize topology change. Intellectus information facilitates the construction of an abstract overview of the network topologies created during the experiments and helps us better understand the network as a whole. Spatial and temporal correlations from the local decision of every sensor nodes can provide a global overview of the topology network.

Within wireless sensor networks (WSN), network topology and connectivity is one of the key elements that needs to be known in order to perform fault detection and isolation identification. Knowledge of connectivity is fundamental to understanding the operation of a given sensor network. The Intellectus methodology described herein can be used to monitor such connectivity. This paper evaluates Intellectus through the injection of particular test cases within a testbed;Intellectus is capable of building an overview of a network topology as a bi-product of such experiments which assists in the better understanding of the real WSN (link connectivity, network topology and sensor node roles). Spatial and temporal correlations from each nodes local decision can, when aggregated, provide a global overview of the topology network.
