A dynamics-constrained method for distributed frequency regulation in low-inertia power systems

An increasing number of power electronics-interfaced renewable energy sources are integrated into the power grids. Such power systems suffer from poor frequency dynamic behaviors due to the decreasing rotational inertia and governor damping, thus are vulnerable to disturbances. A widely investigated approach to improve the frequency dynamics of the system is to imitate the synchronous generator responses by power converter control. In this paper, a dynamics-constrained frequency control method is proposed to bridge the gap between frequency dynamics optimization and secondary frequency control in low-inertia power systems. An intraday optimization model is formulated for the optimal tuning of the converter control parameters with guaranteed frequency security, and a distributed model predictive controller is developed for recovering the frequency economically. Case studies demonstrate the practicability of the proposed dynamic constrained frequency regulation approach and further comparison illustrates the computational efficiency and scalability of the proposed distributed algorithm.

This article introduces an open-source software for distributed and decentralized non-convex optimization named ALADIN-alpha. ALADIN-alpha is a MATLAB implementation of tailored variants of the Augmented Lagrangian Alternating Direction Inexact Newton (ALADIN) algorithm. It is user interface is convenient for rapid prototyping of non-convex distributed optimization algorithms. An improved version of the recently proposed bi-level variant of ALADIN is included enabling decentralized non-convex optimization with reduced information exchange. A collection of examples from different applications fields including chemical engineering, robotics, and power systems underpins the potential of ALADIN-alpha.

A Unified Approach to Plant-wide Dissipative model predictive control *

An approach to plant-wide model predictive control based on dissipativity theory is presented. Dissipativity theory facilitates the decomposition of the plant-wide system into interacting process and controller networks. The controller may take a decentralized, distributed or fully centralized structure without significantly changing the complexity of analysis. This approach to dissipativity based control is enabled by the use of dynamic supply rates as quadratic difference forms which capture more dynamic system information than constant supply rates and decrease the conservativeness of the approach. Plant-wide dissipativity properties ensure stability of the plant-wide system and minimum performance.

Hierarchical energy management control based on different communication topologies for hybrid electric vehicle platoon

To address the problem of longitudinal control and energy management of nonlinear hybrid electric vehicle platoon with different unidirectional communication topologies, a novel hierarchical energy management con-trol strategy based on different communication topologies for platoon is proposed. Firstly, the upper platoon controller is based on the established nonlinear platoon longitudinal dynamics model. The vehicle-to-vehicle communication is applied to obtain the preceding vehicle information under different unidirectional commu-nication topologies. The distributed model predictive control is used to realize the platoon longitudinal control and obtain the desired demand torque. Secondly, the lower energy management controller is based on desired demand torque and combines with current battery state of charge, the equivalent factor-based Deep Q-Learning is adopted to reasonably allocate the power component torque. Then, the platoon control effects of different unidirectional communication topologies are compared and verified under the given driving cycle. The pre-ceding and leading following topology is chosen that satisfies real-time and optimality. The topology is also used to verify the effectiveness and working condition adaptability for this strategy. Finally, the simulation results under Chongqing actual working condition show that the strategy can well meet the requirements of platoon following, safety and comfort. The average fuel economy is improved by 2.61% and 7.58% compared with traditional deep Q-learning and Q-Learning, respectively, which can achieve global optimal similar to dynamic programming.

Optimization-Driven control and Organization of a Robot Swarm for Cooperative Transportation

The cooperation of autonomous robotic systems, forming a robotic network by communicating with each other, brings about the potential to improve both performance and robustness in robotics applications, but introduces additional complexity in control design. In this context, this paper examines a cooperative transportation task that can serve as a test bed for distributed control algorithms, but may also inspire applications in logistics. In the proposed approach, the task solution is split into an organization scheme, determining formations useful for the current situation, as well as a distributed controller maintaining the formation. Both of these rely on the solution of optimization problems, with the latter drawing from distributed model predictive control theory. The optimization problems are formulated in a way that they can be derived automatically from the intrinsic properties of the considered scenario, e.g. the number of participating robots and the shape of the transported object. Therefore, no human intervention or scenario-specific design steps are necessary while still being able to cater to a wide range of scenarios. Challenging simulation scenarios illustrate the performance achievable with the proposed scheme.

Combined Scheduling and control Design for the Coordination of Automated Vehicles at Intersections

Solving the problem of intersection crossing for autonomous vehicles is a challenging task due to combined combinatoric and dynamical control decisions. To reduce the complexity of the computations and distribute the resulting global optimization problem, we propose a combined scheduling-control method. Thereby, in this paper, we focus on the formulation of a resource-constrained-project-scheduling problem (RCPSP) to solve the combinatoric decision, i.e. the order in which vehicles cross an intersection area in a central coordination unit. This problem considers control decisions from the vehicles, which are computed using model predictive control (MPC) laws. In turn, the resulting scheduling solution is incorporated again in local vehicle MPC problems, which negotiate among each other to find a dynamically feasible solution. This seamless combination of scheduling and control results in efficient solutions, which is illustrated using numerical simulation and the results are compared with a first-come-first-served (FCFS) strategy.

In this paper, a distributed model predictive control is proposed to manage the whole set of actuators (heating/cooling, ventilation, lighting, shading) in a multi-zone building to control comfort parameters (temperature, indoor CO 2 level and indoor illuminance). The control process is performed in a distributed fashion and handles variable prices as well as resource limitation in a context of a multi energy source building. To this end, we firstly present a zonal nonlinear model predictive controller which is concerned by zonal decision making -part 1 of the paper-.We then provide a coordination scheme based on a primal decomposition to address the resource allocation problem which occurs in the presence of global constraints on power consumption and/or global shared storage capability in the building -part 2 of the paper-Lamoudi et al. [2012]. We finally provide some simulation results attesting the fast convergence of control algorithm and the benefit of the controller.

Rolling self-triggered distributed MPC for dynamically coupled nonlinear systems☆

The mutual influences caused by dynamic couplings in large-scale systems increase the difficulty in the design and analysis of distributed model predictive control (DMPC), and require information exchange among subsystems which calls for a scheduling strategy to save communication resources in communication-limited environments. To circumvent the two problems, we design a rolling self -triggered DMPC strategy for large-scale dynamically coupled systems with state and control input constraints. First, the optimal control problem where the cost is subject to the coupled dynamic and the constraints are subject to the uncoupled counterpart is proposed, forming the dual-model DMPC that is simple in design and analysis but yields good control performance. Second, the information exchange only occurs at some specified triggering instants determined by a rolling self-triggered mechanism, saving communication resources more significantly. The effectiveness of the designed strategy is verified by numerical simulations. (c) 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The paper considers distributed model predictive control (MPC) strategies that are appropriate for controlling large-scale systems such as power systems. The overall system is decomposed into subsystems, each with its own MPC controller. To achieve performance equivalent to centralized MPC, these distributed regulators must work iteratively and cooperatively towards satisfying a common, systemwide control objective. Automatic generator control (AGC) provides a practical example for contrasting the performance of centralized and decentralized controllers.

Advanced building structures are extremely complicated with a large number of dynamically interacting components and widely equipped with multi-zone air conditioning (ME A/C) systems. In this paper, multi-zone commercial building systems are built as second order Resistance-Capacitance (RC) models with individual zones communicating to the whole network through neighbors. The presented thermal dynamics are different from that in our previous work [8], which does not consider the wall’s thermal dynamics. The second order RC models are more accurate in capturing the thermal dynamics of a building in comparison with the first order model employed in [8]. We first propose a hierarchical distributed method using ME A/C systems in commercial building for demand response. The idea of the upper layer strategy is based on the balance of building’s energy demand and users’ comfort level to generate reference signals. The lower layer is designed as distributed model predictive controllers (DMPC) to track the reference signals whereas energy cost and demand are reduced. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control.
