In this work, we consider the problem of controlling two linear systems coupled through the inputs. We propose a novel distributed model predictive control method based on game theory in which two different agents communicate in order to find a cooperative solution to the centralized control problem. We assume that each agent only has partial information of the model and the state of the system. The class of systems considered arises naturally in multi-input multi-output processes in which a transfer function model is obtained using standard identification techniques. The performance and the robustness of the proposed control scheme with respect to data losses in the communications are illustrated by extensive simulations.

A reliable and economic/environmental smart grid (SG) has been a major focus area for modern power system design, which is threatened by the renewable resource penetration and load fluctuation. This paper presents a reliable and economic load frequency control (LFC) strategy based on model predictive control (MPC) to allocate active power set points for different generators by considering units' economic costs and very short-term load forecasting (VSTLF). The MPC-based LFC strategy can balance the economic costs among generation units and take optional control actions in advance by considering time-varying load disturbance over a future time horizon. A comparison with the traditional LFC and the MPC strategy without considering load prediction and economic costs is made in a MATLAB/Simulink scenario for various load disturbances. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in stabilizing system frequency and reducing response time.

LIDAR systems are able to provide preview information of wind disturbances at various distances in front of wind turbines. This technology paves the way for new control concepts such as feedforward control and model predictive control. This paper compares a nonlinear model predictive controller and a feedforward controller to a baseline controller. Realistic wind "measurements" are obtained using a detailed simulation of a LIDAR system. A full lifetime comparison shows the advantages of using the wind predictions to reduce wind turbine fatigue loads on the tower and blades as well as to limit the blade pitch rates. The results illustrate that the feedforward controller can be combined with a tower feedback controller to yield similar load reductions as the model predictive controller.

In this work a two-layer model predictive control strategy is presented. The upper layer searches for optimal steady state targets, while the lower layer manages the transient state of the considered process, calculating the future control moves. In order to efficiently handle time delays on the input-output channels, a suitable lower layer formulation has been developed. In particular, a decoupling strategy acting on the constraints relaxation guarantees a protection against critical situations tied to the presence of time delays. In the proposed Advanced Process control system architecture, the model predictive control module interacts with other key modules that assure major resilience in the plant management. Simulation and practical results deriving from the implementation of the designed controller on a clinker production phase have proven the consistency and the reliability of the proposed approach. With respect to the previous control system, based on local PID controllers, a remarkable variance reduction of the controlled variables has been observed, leading to the possibility to run the plant much closer to the operating boundary limits thus achieving, besides all, energy saving.

In many instances it is desirable for wind turbine to produce less power than is available in the wind, In such instances, one can balance between the strictness of the wind turbine power reference following and the reduction of the wind turbine structural loading. This paper investigates how wind turbine structural loads may be reduced through appropriate changes (i.e., small deviations) in wind turbine power references. An explicit model predictive controller a closed form, parametric solution to the optimal control problem - is designed for the problem at hand. The extensive, realistic simulations have shown that the optimal controllers, which allow variation of the wind turbine power references, significantly reduce structural loads and fatigue.

The turbocharged diesel engine is a typical multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system with strong couplings, actuator constraints, and fast dynamics. This paper addresses the air path regulation in turbocharged diesel engines using an explicit model predictive control (EMPC) approach, which allows tracking of the time-varying setpoint values generated by the supervisory level controller while satisfying the actuator constraints. The proposed EMPC framework consists of calibration, engine model identification, controller formulation, and state observer design. The proposed EMPC approach has a low computation requirement and is suitable for implementation in the engine control unit (ECU) on board. The experimental results on a turbocharged Cat C6.6 diesel engine illustrate that the EMPC controller significantly improves the tracking performance of the exhaust emission variables against the decentralized single-input single-output (SISO) control method.

This paper considers a compensation strategy for respiratory-induced tumour motion for adaptive radiotherapy using a controlled patient support system (PSS). A model predictive control (MPC) scheme for the PSS to track the tumour motion is proposed together with two methods for predicting tumour motion, including a Kalman filter and neural networks. Simulation results using a clinical data set consisting of 27 traces of respiratory motion show the potential of the proposed control strategy

The paper presents nonlinear model predictive control designed using recurrent neural network. A recurrent neural network is trained to act as the one-step ahead predictor, which is then used succesively to obtain k-step ahead prediction of the plant output. Based on the neural predictor, the control law is derived solving a constrained optimization problem. The stability of the considered predictive scheme is also investigated showing that a cost function is monotonically decreasing with respect to time. Derived stability conditions are used to redefine a constrained optimization in order to calculate a control, which guarantees the stable work of the control system. The quality of the proposed stable predictive scheme is tested using a tank unit simulator realized in MATLAB/Simulink environment.

Distillation is fundamental separation processes in the chemical and petrochemical industry. Keeping a constant product composition in a distillation column is of great importance from an economical aspect. Difficulties arise because of multitude of potential variable interactions and disturbance in the system. Wood and berry being the transfer function model, is widely accepted for continuous process of distillation column. The goal of this paper is to design advance control strategy for MIMO system. PID control with and without de-coupler is also implemented and compared with model based predictive control using MATLAB.

This paper presents a model predictive self-healing control (MPSC) of dual active bridge (DAB) converter for battery energy storage system (BESS) application. The main feature of the proposed MPSC scheme is an autonomous corrective action at the prediction stage in comparison to conventional model predictive control (MPC) approach. This feature is required in particular for predictive controlled DAB converter to ensure and validate the predicted AC link inductor's current n-step ahead in horizon of time. The proposed MPSC for DAB converter doesn't require substantial tuning effort in comparison to conventional control schemes for DAB converters. The MPSC cost function is developed based on the desired phase shift between the primary and secondary sides' voltages of the DAB transformer. The self-healing loop utilizes the feasible range of power transfer in conjunction with the AC link inductor's voltage status i.e. profile, to validate the predicted current and phase shift for the cost function. The AC link inductor voltage profile in DAB converter could cause high error in predicted current, thus the proposed self-healing loop autonomously corrects potential error in current prediction. The theoretical concepts are validated via several case studies for the considered BESS application. The performance and design effort of the controller is compared with conventional PI-based control schemes for DAB.
