For better DC-link voltage response in three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) back-to-back converter, a cascaded extended state observer (CESO) is proposed in this paper. DC-link is the connection between active front ends (AFEs) and machines, whose stability is critical to both sides. However, the desired performance cannot be guaranteed when many disturbances occurred. Aiming to improve its response under disturbance, two extended state observers (ESOs) which estimate power and torque disturbance for the AFE and surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM), respectively, are realized in NPC back-to-back converter with model predictive control (MPC). Due to the cascaded structure of the back-to-back converter, power estimation in a conventional way takes a long time to converge. Thus, a CESO is proposed by introducing the torque reference to estimate power disturbance more quickly. With proper design of feedforward compensation, faster dynamic response is obtained, also, DC-link voltage barely changes when the working point of the SPMSM moves. The performance in both steady and transient states of the proposed scheme is verified by simulation results.

Dynamic driving simulators are seeing an increasing interest in the automotive community, both in the research and industrial fields. Different aspects are involved, from virtual prototyping to rehab: racing applications are of particular interest, where simulators are exploited to improve the driver's capabilities and test different vehicle set-ups avoiding the costs of testing on real tracks. The ability of the platform to reproduce as faithfully as possible the driving feelings is crucial in such context: this is the task of Motion Cueing Algorithms. Recently, innovative, MPC-based approaches have been proposed which improve the performance with respect to the classical, filtering-based procedures. The criticality in such approaches is the prediction phase, both for the derivation of reliable reference signals and the computational burden associated with the solution of the optimal problem. In this paper, a first strategy is proposed to derive an affordable reference by exploiting the repetitive pattern typical of the racing context, while a move-blocking approach is integrated to assure real-time capabilities.

The increasing share of decentral renewable energy in Germany requires the flexibilization of prosumers in the electricity grid. Prosumers that can shift power demand from high price intervals to low price intervals can make use of time-variable electricity prices. In this research an optimization-based method called economic model predictive control (MPC) is implemented on field-typical hardware to show practical considerations of this application. The implementation is evaluated in a hardware-in-the-loop test bench using simulation data obtained from measurements in an existing production facility. In this manner, we demonstrate that the field application of economic MPC is feasible and can generate economic benefits for the energy system operator.

In this paper we propose a model predictive controller for spacecraft attitude tracking with reaction wheel actuators. The controller is designed for desaturation of the reaction wheels. In contrast with standard desaturation techniques, which rely on the activation of thrusters, the proposed strategy does not need to consume fuel as it exploits external torques derived from gravity gradients and/or the Earth magnetic field. The controller also guarantees that the spacecraft attitude is constrained within specified bounds during desaturation.

In this paper a cooperative adaptive cruise control approach using stochastic, linear model predictive control strategies is presented. The presented approach deals with an urban traffic environment where vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication systems are available. The goal is the minimization of a vehicle's fuel consumption in a vehicle-following scenario. This is achieved by minimizing a piecewise linear approximation of the vehicle's fuel consumption map. By means of a conditional Gaussian model the probability distribution of the upcoming velocity of the preceding vehicle is estimated based on current measurements and upcoming traffic light signals. The predicted distribution function of the predecessor's velocity is used in two ways for stochastic model predictive control. On the one hand, individual chance constraints are introduced and subsequently reformulated to obtain an equivalent deterministic model predictive control problem. On the other hand, samples are drawn from the prediction model and used for a randomized optimization approach. Finally, the two developed stochastic control strategies are evaluated and compared against a deterministic model predictive control approach by means of a virtual traffic simulation. The evaluation of the controllers show a significant reduction of the fuel consumption compared to the predecessor while increasing safety and driving comfort.

This paper addresses an optimal formation control of multiple two-wheeled mobile vehicles with the help of model predictive control. An optimal formation is automatically determined among pre-defined formations in real time according to the environment with the help of model predictive control. In this paper we propose a novel control architecture to manage a large fleet of thermal loads and adjust traditional power plant generation setpoints for reference tracking and production costs minimization. The time scales considered are determined by sampling times of a few seconds and control horizons of a few minutes. The control architecture consists in a model predictive controller (MPC) combined with a block called index generator. The index generator receives aggregated control signals from the MPC and splits these among individual loads while satisfying temperature and switching constraints of the controlled appliances. It then computes an updated estimate of the aggregated controllability of the loads and provides this to the MPC for setpoint calculations. This control architecture facilitates handling very large numbers of single thermal appliances and tens of traditional generation units with very small computational efforts. We assess the added value of controlling thermal loads by implementing our control architecture within a simulation framework which accurately represents the Dutch power system.

In this paper the model predictive control (MPC) strategy is used to solve the mobile robot trajectory tracking problem, where controller must ensure that robot follows pre-calculated trajectory. The so-called explicit optimal controller design and implementation are described. The MPC solution is calculated off-line and expressed as a piecewise affine function of the current state of a mobile robot. A linearized kinematic model of a differential drive mobile robot is used for the controller design purpose. The optimal controller, which has a form of a look-up table, is tested in simulation and experimentally.

This paper presents a novel finite-set model predictive control technique with a fixed switching frequency for a 5-level FCC converter. Standard implementations of finite-set model predictive control (FS-MPC) are typically characterised by a variable switching frequency, a high noise floor and a large voltage and current ripple. A method is proposed by selecting a fixed switching period and dividing it into smaller evaluation steps. The switching behaviour is obtained by using the analogy of PWM with triangular carriers to define regions during which only specific switching transitions are allowed. To account for the repetitive nature of the desired switching waveform, an average receding horizon prediction method is used. An anticipated prediction is made by calculating the average value for one switching period ahead, according to the position and state in the current switching period. The control method was practically implemented and evaluated, proved to be feasible and provided satisfactory results.

This paper further develops a model predictive control (MPC) scheme which is able to exploit the large number of redundant switching states available in a multi-level H-bridge StatCom (H-StatCom). The new sections of the scheme provide optimised methods to trade off the harmonic performance with converter switching losses and capacitor voltage ripple. Varying the pulse placement within the modulation scheme and modifying the heuristic model of the voltage balancing characteristics allows the MPC scheme to achieve superior performance to that of the industry standard phase shifted modulation technique. Simulation and experimental results are presented that confirm the correct operation of the control and modulation strategies.
