This paper proposes a distributed model predictive control (DMPC) approach for an urban traffic network (UTN) system. The control objective is to minimize the traffic congestion and the total travel time spent (TTS) in each link. The proposed DMPC algorithm considers traffic demand and disturbance predictions. The CasADi optimization tool is used to solve the constrained optimization problem. The proposed distributed control approach achieved 60% less computation time, 14.3% less TTS, and 15.1% less queue length compared to the centralized approach. Moreover, while the centralized algorithm neglected the input and state constraints, the distributed approach resulted in the satisfaction of all the constraints over the whole horizon.

distributed model predictive control (DMPC) methods that are based on iterative optimization algorithms normally require a large number of communications between the controllers, especially when the number of subsystems is large. This can easily result in overloading the network which is normally shared between many different users. Therefore methods to reduce the load on the network while still satisfying convergence, feasibility, stability, and a certain level of performance are of a great importance. In this paper a novel event-based optimization algorithm is provided to reduce the number of communications in DMPC methods that are based on dual decomposition. © 2017

This paper proposes a distributed model predictive control algorithm applied in a vehicle platooning control problem. The control objective of each vehicle in the platoon is to follow a imposed position trajectory by means of distributed model predictive control, while maintaining a constant spacing between vehicles. A delay-free communication architecture is proposed and two cases are evaluated, namely: i) an unconstrained optimization problem and ii) an optimization problem in which the constraints are imposed based on the received information. The simulation results show that introducing constraints helps improving the results.

The hierarchical control structure, namely, primary, secondary and tertiary control, becomes the standard operation of islanded microgrid. However, due to the proliferation of renewable energy sources which fluctuate fast, the time scale separation of the secondary and tertiary control can make the operation of microgrid becomes less economic efficient. Therefore, we incorporate the economic dispatch (ED) into the secondary control level and a distributed model predictive control methodology is proposed to solve the optimization problem. The control framework is fully distributed and each distributed generation is able to communicate with other nodes for iterative calculation. To verify the novelty of the economic secondary control strategy, a microgrid with micro gas turbine, diesel generator, battery and renewable energy is simulated. A comparison with the centralized control strategy and distributed frequency/ED separating control strategy is presented as well.

This paper proposes a distributed model predictive control algorithm for formation flight of multi unmanned aerial vehicle systems. Each unmanned aerial vehicle is equipped with an upper-level controller capable of solving local optimization problems under ideal conditions. Interaction between subsystems relies on assumed reference trajectories, with communication occurring solely among neighboring unmanned aerial vehicles and being unidirectional, enabling parallel optimization problem-solving with significant scalability. Optimization problems for each subsystem are coupled through cost functions and constraints, considering both energy minimization and minimization of control input changes. Terminal components are designed for the algorithm, and its stability is proven. Finally, simulation is utilized to verify that this method achieves formation flight of multi unmanned aerial vehicle systems.

This paper proposes a distributed model predictive control (DMPC) method for a half-vehicle system with active suspensions. First, the half-vehicle system is divided into three subsystems to reduce the system dimension. Considering the distribution characteristics of suspension control systems, a DMPC controller is designed for each suspension subsystem in order to inhibit the vehicle vertical and pitch motion. To evaluate the proposed control system, controllers with low cost micro-control units (MCU) are implemented, where a fast MPC method for real-time optimization based on continuation/general minimum residual (C/GMRES) method is realized and in-vehicle network FlexRay is used to exchange control information among these controllers. Finally, the implementation of DMPC controllers in MCUs is finished and the results show that vehicle comfortability can be improved by the proposed controllers. This is a position paper on the current state of the art in distributed model predictive control (M PC) and our view on its future potential. We present results from a recent survey of 35 distributed MPC approaches. For this, we propose a way in which distributed MPC approaches can be categorized for comparison. We also link the potential that these approaches have to the domain of other fields such as integrated environmental optimal decision making and cyber-physical systems. Many challenges for realizing these links have to be faced. We present our views on how the advances in several highly active research domains could be used to overcome these challenges. As such, this paper is intended as a starting point for the exploration of various novel research cooperations.

distributed model predictive control for a hybrid system that comprises wind and photovoltaic generation subsystems, a battery bank and an ac load is developed in this paper. Consider that the wind subsystem and the solar subsystem are two spatial distributed energy generation systems, so we design a distributed MPC for optimal management and operation of distributed wind and solar energy generation system. The wind and solar generation system is characterized by nonlinearity. Therefore, neural model is used to approximating the dynamics of nonlinear process. Reasonable solution to the optimization and constraints by using distributed model predictive control is presented. The performance of the distributed model predictive control is show through computer simulation to illustrate the advantages of the proposed method.

Vehicle platoon control based on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication is one of the promising technologies to improve the performance of transportation systems. It has the potential to increase traffic throughput, improve road traffic safety and reduce energy consumption. This paper proposes an innovative distributed model predictive control (DMPC) solution to the cooperative adaptive cruise problem of heterogeneous vehicle platoons. The vehicles (or nodes) in a platoon are dynamically decoupled but constrained by spatial geometry. Each node solves a local open-loop optimal control problem in a distributed manner. The cost function is designed by considering the error between the predicted trajectory and the assumed trajectory, and the optimization is carried out by comprehensively considering platoon stability, passenger comfort, fuel economy and other objectives. The effectiveness of the proposed DMPC algorithm is verified by simulation in MATLAB, and is compared with the traditional linear PID controller under different working conditions.
