Planning and Evaluating Nature-Based Solutions for Watershed Investment Programs with a SMART Perspective Using a distributed modeling Tool

Watershed Investment Programs (WIPs) face many challenges in implementing strategies aimed at restoring and preserving ecosystem services using Nature-based Solutions (NbS). A key challenge lies in defining SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) objectives, which involve addressing questions such as which NbS interventions to apply, where, and in what amounts. Effectively achieving WIPs' objectives requires strategic implementation of NbS. In response to this challenge, we present SIGA-CALv1.0, a daily time-step and distributed modeling conceptual framework that enables the design and evaluation of the impact of NbS portfolios on water quantity and quality. To validate our framework, we applied it to the Arma river basin in Colombia. Our findings indicate that NbS can lead to substantial benefits, including reductions of up to 47% in sediment, 62% in nitrogen, 8% in phosphorus, and 15% in pathogen indicators (total coliforms). The proposed methodological framework offers decision-makers robust technical support for defining strategic NbS implementation plans, guided by SMART objectives. This approach strengthens the effectiveness of ecosystem services restoration and conservation strategies in watersheds, enabling more efficient resource allocation and improved environmental outcomes.

3D distributed modeling of trolling-mode AFM during 2D manipulation of a spherical cell

In this study, a general 3D distributed modeling of Trolling-Mode AFM (TR-AFM) as a nanorobot is presented to analyze the 2D manipulation process of a spherical cell. To this aim, the analysis is categorized into 3 sections. In the first section, 6 deformations of TR-AFM are taken into account, and the standard model of the system is obtained. Moreover, the system is simulated in ANSYS Workbench. The results of modal and transient analyses of the system from both analytical and software methods reveal high agreement, which confirms the accuracy of the presented analytical model. In the second section, by utilizing the 3D derived model, displacement of a spherical yeast single cell (W303) with 2 mu m radius is simulated, and the result is verified with that of experiment. It is demonstrated that lateral manipulation requires less force and time in comparison to longitudinal one. In the last section, stress analysis is accomplished in ANSYS for TR-AFM to assure that the designed system withstands the created stresses with a good factor of safety. As a result, an optimized TR-AFM is proposed and analyzed from dynamic and stress points of view. Moreover, 3D simulation of the 2D manipulation process is done successfully, and the result has shown well matching with those of experiment and another similar simulation, confirming the applicability of the proposed system. Through this detailed investigation, an optimized TR-AFM is recommended to substitute the classic AFMs in manipulation of cells, due to its smaller inserted force to the fragile and sensitive bio-samples.

Integrating Tracers and Soft Data Into Multi-Criteria Calibration: Implications From distributed modeling in a Riparian Wetland

Calibrating distributed hydrological models often leads to equifinality due to complex model structures, which can be further exacerbated in wetlands due to spatio-temporal heterogeneity in ecohydrological processes. Here, step-wise calibrations of the physically-based distributed model EcH(2)O-iso was conducted in a data-rich wetland by minimizing a weighted average of the errors on discharge, stream isotopes, groundwater (GW) isotopes, and soil moisture. Results showed multi-criteria calibration outperformed single-criterion calibration as it strongly increased the overall performance, yet only marginally degraded performance of each calibration target. Isotopes were highlighted as appropriate auxiliary data as they effectively constrained the model with relatively small weights (0.1). However, those parameter sets that minimize the errors could still lead to physically implausible simulations of uncalibrated internal states or fluxes. This was further demonstrated by an approach developed to check internal fluxes based on soft data (transpiration and lateral flow), suggesting 54% of optimized models gave "right answers for the wrong reasons." By excluding those models against soft data, such an approach further constrained equifinality, and unraveled potential inconsistencies between observations and calibration. modeling represented the wetland as a slow-draining system mainly fed by GW, but also influenced by near-surface flow during winter or summer convectional events. Further, heterogeneity in hydrological functioning was partly attributed to distinct evapotranspiration patterns between contrasting vegetation communities. Therefore, this study not only provided insights into wetland functioning, but also revealed potential equifinality even with abundant data for calibration, and potential solutions based on the integration of isotopes and soft data.

We present a Web-based multi-layer architecture and implementation to enable near real-time collaboration within partially-distributed engineering teams in this paper. Our architecture named distributed modeling and Simulation (DisMoSim) enables collaborative 3D modeling and simulation of complex cyberphysical systems (CPS) across different servers, offices, lab spaces, or organizations. More specifically, DisMoSim creates networks of DisMoSim nodes that communicate using Web protocols with little or no perceptible delay. Each node provides different CPS services, e.g., user interface nodes provide collaborative 3D modeling;computational nodes provide simulations of multi-body dynamics or kinematics;storage nodes allow persisting and sharing models and simulation results;hardware-in-the-loop nodes connect physical testing workbenches to provide real-world sensor measurements as simulation input;software-in-the-loop nodes provide control signals to simulate hardware controllers. In the following, we derive a set of design goals and propose our DisMoSim architecture. We illustrate how we used our multi-layer conceptual architecture to implement a variety of CPS services for an example scenario. L’étude des mécanismes d’érosion hydrique des sols et de transfert de matières en suspension (MES) des bassins versants vers les rivières revêt des enjeux environnementaux et socio-économiques prégnants face à une pression anthropique grandissante et au changement climatique. L'objectif de cette thèse est de comprendre comment la variabilité de la pluie contrôle l’activation de différentes zones sources de MES et la dynamique des flux hydro-sédimentaires dans deux bassins versants méditerranéens de méso-échelle, la Claduègne (42 km²) et le Galabre (20 km2) membres de l’infrastructure de recherche sur la zone critique *** la première partie, les contributions des zones d'érosion aux MES à l’exutoire de la Claduègne ont été quantifiées à haute résolution temporelle avec une approche low-cost de traçage. Deux ensembles de traceurs (spectres colorimétriques et de fluorescence X) et trois modèles de mélange ont été comparés pour évaluer la sensibilité des contributions de sources à ces choix méthodologiques. Les principales sources de MES identifiées sont les zones de badlands marno-calcaires. Une approche similaire conduite sur le bassin versant du Galabre a mis en avant la dominance des badlands sur molasses dans les flux de MES. La comparaison des traceurs et des modèles de mélange, a montré que les choix méthodologiques génèrent des différences importantes, qui amènent à recommander une approche d’ensemble multi-traceurs-multi-modèle pour obtenir des résultats plus robustes. Big data quality prediction in the process industry: A distributed parallel modeling framework

With the ever increasing data collected from the process, the era of big data has arrived in the process industry. Therefore, the computational effort for data modeling and analytics in standalone modes has become increasingly demanding, particularly for large-scale processes. In this paper, a distributed parallel process modeling approach is presented based on a MapReduce framework for big data quality prediction. Firstly, the architecture for distributed parallel data modeling is formulated under the MapReduce framework. Secondly, a big data quality prediction scheme is developed based on the distributed parallel data modeling approach. As an example, the basic Semi-Supervised Probabilistic Principal Component Regression (SSPPCR) model is deployed to concurrently train a set of local models with split datasets. Meanwhile, Bayesian rule is utilized in a MapReduce way to integrate local models based on their predictive abilities. Two case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for big data quality prediction. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

distributed incipient fault detection with causality-based multi-perspective subblock partitioning for large-scale nonlinear processes

Detecting incipient faults is a crucial task in complex large-scale nonlinear industrial processes. However, conventional distributed frameworks encounter challenges in identifying appropriate subblock partitioning methods. To address this problem, we propose a novel distributed incipient fault detection method, called CMPSP-MKPCA, based on causal relationship multi-perspective subblock partitioning (CMPSP) and modified kernel principal component analysis (MKPCA), facilitating incipient fault detection in large-scale nonlinear processes. Firstly, considering the property of incipient faults to undergo limited propagation among process flow connections, we obtain fine-grainehe direction of potential incipient fault information propagation. Secondly, the design of multi-perspective detection blocks provides real-time selection of sub-block delineation results to adapt to the different needs of incipient faults during latency and transition periods. Thirdly, local detection is realized by combining the Modified KPCA method and Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD), while the global detection statistics is obtained by Bayesian inference fusion. Simulation experiments based on the continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system and the Tennessee Eastman (TE) system verify the effectiveness and superiority of the method.

A Novel distributed Fault Diagnosis Scheme Toward Open-Set Scenarios Based on Extreme Value Theory

Under closed-set scenarios (CSS), distributed modeling performs well in fault diagnosis of plant-wide industrial processes due to its flexibility and robustness. However, a more realistic scenario is often open, where unseen situations may arise unexpectedly, rendering existing methods infeasible. The advent of open-set recognition algorithms that can effectively distinguish known samples and reject unknown ones bridges this gap. Nevertheless, the poor scalability of these algorithms prevents them from being elegantly embedded in popular distributed modeling schemes, which hinders the implementation of plant-wide industrial process fault diagnosis toward open-set scenarios (OSS). In this work, we formulate a novel distributed fault diagnosis scheme toward OSS to solve this problem. First, a mutual information-based local module decomposition and expansion strategy is proposed to minimize the loss of intermodule relevant information. Second, a novel generalized basic probability assignments generation technique based on extreme value theory is developed for modeling unknown information. It enables any classifier capable of probabilistic prediction to be applied to OSS and easily embedded in distributed modeling schemes. Finally, a conflict management scheme combining supervised and unsupervised is devised to address the vulnerability of the modified generalized combination rule to counter-intuitive results from fusing conflicting evidence. Experimental results on two plant-wide industrial process datasets demonstrate the proposed approach's feasibility and superiority.

PSD INDI and wake gradient based control of high aspect ratio UAVs' close formation flight

To enhance the cruising performance of a swarm and to ensure its flight safety, the stability and the control of the Close Formation Flight (CFF) are essential elements. This paper proposed a methodology to improve the accuracy of the dynamic characteristics' analysis and reduce the flight control tracking error for CFF using wake vortex information. Firstly, a criterion for trajectory stability during formation flight is derived based on the wake gradient, and the patterns of modal characteristics changing with the relative position between the leader and the follower under wake interference are analyzed. Then, a novel Partial States Determined Incremental Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion (PSD INDI) control method is proposed for the attitude control loop, which the damping derivatives and the wake gradient of the UAVs are integrated into the Extended State Observer (ESO) to estimate the required angular acceleration, the state estimation error is reduced, the controller performance being thus improved. Next, in the trajectory control loop, a method using distributed propellers and rudders synchronous control is proposed to generate direct lateral force as the feedforward for L1 control;this way, the cross-track error caused by external interference is eliminated. Finally, considering a swarm of tailless high aspect ratio UAVs, featured as low longitudinal and directional stability and sensitive to wake disturbances, a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation test of CFF is carried out. While encountering sudden changes in wake gradients near the optimal cruising position, the attitude and trajectory disturbances, as well as the throttle demand, are smaller, which prove the robustness, the accuracy, and the feasibility of the proposed flight dynamics' analysis and control method.
