distributed object computing (DOC) is an increasingly important computing paradigm exploiting the benefits of object-oriented technology and using the internet and its communications infrastructure as a vehicle for the delivery of a wide range of sophisticated value-added distributed services. ne integration of the Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and object-oriented programming languages facilitates the introduction and deployment of such applications in a platform-independent open distributed environment. In this paper, we introduce both CORBA and Java as tools to facilitate the development of distributed object computing-based applications, and we present a prototype electronic commerce application using the DOC paradigm.

This paper deals with the studies of the distributed object computing environments. We have developed several client/server systems to compare key aspects of the distributed object computing. We will present the development aspects of these systems and discuss their unique features. These experiences will be useful for teaching the evolution of distributed object computing models with emphasis on system development, testing and performance evaluation. A new fuzzy-decision based load balancing system for distributed object computing

distributed object computing systems are widely envisioned to be the desired distributed software development paradigm due to the higher modularity and the capability of handling machine and operating system heterogeneity. Indeed, enabled by the tremendous advancements in processor and networking technologies, complex operations such as object serialization and data marshaling have become very efficient, and thus, distributed object systems are being built for many different applications. However, as the system scales up (e.g., with larger number of server and client objects, and more machines), a judicious load balancing system is required to efficiently distribute the workload (e.g., the queries, messages/objects passing) among the different servers in the system. Unfortunately, in existing distributed object middleware systems, such a load balancing facility does not exist. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a new dynamic fuzzy-decision-based load balancing system incorporated in a distributed object computing environment. Our proposed approach works by using a fuzzy logic controller which informs a client object to use the most appropriate service such that load balancing among servers is achieved. We have chosen Jini to build our experimental middleware platform, on which our proposed approach as well as other related techniques are implemented and compared. Extensive experiments are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of our fuzzy-decision-based algorithm, which is found to be consistently better than other approaches. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. An antibody network inspired evolutionary framework for distributed object computing

In order to meet the increasing scale and users requirements for the distributed object computing (DOC) systems, their infrastructures are highly desirable to be redesigned. Based on the principles of immune system and the evolution mechanisms learned from an antibody network model, a novel evolutionary framework for DOC (E-DOC) is proposed. The antibody network model as well as the evolution process including clonal proliferation, immune elimination, and immune memory is studied. Then, E-DOC framework based on the antibody network is proposed, whose simulation platform is designed and implemented. On the platform, the evolutionary features are studied by: (1) diversity and stability of antibodies and genotypes, (2) detection and elimination of antigens, (3) effect of immune memory, and (4) tendency of eliminated and stimulated antigens. The experiment results show that the proposed framework can achieve the evolution ability and the promising performance, which are critical to DOC systems. E-DOC is extendable for the future design of distributed object middleware, such as WebSphere Application Server and BEA WebLogic Application Server. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Several such load balancing schemes are proposed recently in the literature. However, while the rationales and mechanisms employed are dramatically different, the relative strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are unknown, making it difficult for a practitioner to choose an appropriate approach for the problem at hand. In this paper, we describe in detail three representative approaches, which are all practicable, and present a quantitative comparison using a real experimental distributed object computing platform. Among these three approaches, namely, JavaSpaces based, request redirection based, and fuzzy decision based, we find that the fuzzy decision-based algorithm outperforms the other two considerably under a wide range of different practical scenarios.

distributed object computing is widely envisioned to be the desired distributed software development paradigm due to the higher modularity and the capability of handling machine and operating system heterogeneity. In this paper, we address the issue of judicious load balancing in distributed object computing systems. In order to decrease response time and to utilize services effectively, we have proposed and implemented a new technique based on machine learning for adaptive and flexible load balancing mechanism within the framework of distributed middleware. We have chosen Jini 2.0 to build our experimental middleware platform, on which our proposed approach as well as other related techniques are implemented and compared. Extensive experiments are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, which is found to be consistently better in comparison with existing techniques.

However, while the rationales and mechanisms employed are dramatically different, the relative strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are unknown, making it difficult for a practitioner to choose an appropriate approach for the problem at hand. In this paper, we describe in detail three representative approaches, which are all practicable, and present a quantitative comparison using our experimental distributed object computing platform. Among these three approaches, namely, JavaSpaces based, request redirection based, and fuzzy decision based, we find that the fuzzy decision based algorithm outperforms the other two considerably.

In this paper, we adopt Java platform to achieve a multi-tier distributed object enterprise computing model which provides an open, flexible, robust and cross-platform standard for enterprise applications of new generation. In addition to this model, we define remote server objects as session or entity objects according to their roles in a distributed application server, which separate information details from business operations for software reuse. A web store system is implement by using this multi-tier distributed object enterprise computing model.

distributed Mission Training (DMT) is a concept composed of promising technologies that support training in a variety of domains such as defense and medicine. To develop and deploy such systems, it is important to account concurrently for hardware and software requirements, given high demands for network bandwidth, computing resources, and complexity of software applications. In this paper, we present the application of a distributed co-design methodology (Discrete Event System Specification/distributed object computing) as applied to the Mission Training and Rehearsal System (MTRS), a DMT system. For an example, we show that the developed simulation models allow prediction of the network capacity below which messages cannot be sent and therefore incorrect behavior results. The key issues presented are (1) characterization of the DMT style architectures in DEVS/DOC, (2) prediction of DMT-like basic scalability traits via simulation, and, (3) discussion on some open problems underlying the applicability of distributed co-design for systems.. containing "off-the-shelf" components.

A web-aware interoperable data mining system

The development of web-aware data mining systems has received a a eat deal of attention in recent years. It plays a key enabling role for competitive businesses in the E-commerce era. One of the challenges in developing web-aware data mining systems is to integrate and coordinate existing data mining applications in a seamless manner so that cost-effective systems can be developed without the need of costly proprietary products. In this paper we present an approach for developing an interoperable web-aware data mining system to achieve this purpose. This approach applies Remote Method Invocation and high level code wrapper of Java distributed object computing to address the issues of interoperability in heterogeneous environments, which includes programming language, platform, and visual object model. The effectiveness of the proposed system is demonstrated through the integration and enhancement of the two well-known standalone data mining tools, SOM_PAK and Nenet, and runs with the iris data and air pollution data.
