Measuring and optimizing CORBA latency and scalability over high-speed networks

There is increasing demand to extend object-oriented middleware, such as OMG CORBA, to support applications with stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements. However, conventional CORBA object Request Broker (ORB) implementations incur high latency and low scalability when used for performance-sensitive applications. These inefficiencies discourage developers from using CORBA for mission/life-critical applications such as real-time avionics, telecom call processing, and medical imaging. This paper provides two contributions to the research on CORBA performance. First, we systematically analyze the latency and scalability of two widely used CORBA ORBs, VisiBroker and Orbix. These results reveal key sources of overhead in conventional ORBs. Second, we describe techniques used to improve latency and scalability in TAO, which is a high-performance, real-time implementation of CORBA. Although conventional ORBs do not yet provide adequate QoS guarantees to applications, our research results indicate ii is possible to implement ORBs that can support high-performance, real-time applications.

The widespread use of wireless and mobile networks and devices requires special programming techniques and solutions. The object request brokers of mobile environments have to adopt these techniques and offer services dealing with the problems of mobility. Most of the existing object request brokers however were developed for fixed networks assuming reliable transport protocols (mostly TCP), while the mobile networks cannot offer high quality transport. In this paper we give an overview of the challenges and solutions in mobile computing and present our ORB(M) framework implementing services based on the solutions. Extending the framework doesn't require the assistance of its developers, the user can implement application-specific semantic elements and deploy various new methods bound to the process of remote invocation. The user can form arbitrary new invocation semantics based on these elements and customise the invocation semantics used by a given method. Our new mobility-related semantic elements offer solutions to the challenges of mobility allowing the user to concentrate on the essential problems of the application and handling.

A distributed object platform infrastructure for multimedia applications

Although distributed object computing has developed rapidly over the past decade, and is now becoming commercially important, there remain key application areas inadequately supported by current standards and implementations. This paper describes research aimed at support for one of these areas: distributed soft real-time/multimedia applications. The approach is to provide a low level platform which offers generic middleware services useful for the implementation of a range of multimedia capable distributed object systems. The design of the platform is influenced on the one hand by the real-time/multimedia-oriented computational model of the RM-ODP and on the other hand by recent research results in the efficient engineering of communications systems and operating systems. The platform provides support for quality of service (QoS) and application specific protocols as required by multimedia capable distributed object systems. A novel scheme for flexible QoS specification and management is described. A performance evaluation of the platform is given and a sample application program is presented to illustrate the platform's API. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Using interceptors to enhance CORBA

The integration of distributed computing and the object model leads to distributed object computing, in which objects rather than processes are distributed across multiple computers. A well-established standard for distributed object computing is the Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). Previously, you would have had to create-and enable the application to use-the components that provide such additional capabilities. Using these components requires specialized knowledge and understanding of problems outside the application domain. With the advent of interceptors-non-application components that can alter application behavior-you can enhance CORBA applications at runtime with components whose operation is transparent to both the application and the CORBA framework, modifying application behavior without modifying the application or the CORBA framework.

Workflow-enabled distributed component-based information architecture for digital medical imaging enterprises

Few information systems today offer a flexible means to define and manage the automated part of radiology processes, which provide clinical imaging services for the entire healthcare organization. Even fewer of them provide a coherent architecture that can easily cope with heterogeneity and inevitable local adaptation of applications and can integrate clinical and administrative information to aid better clinical, operational, and business decisions. We describe an innovative enterprise architecture of image information management systems to fill the needs. Such a system is based on the interplay of production workflow management, distributed object computing, Java and Web techniques, and in-depth domain knowledge in radiology operations. Our design adapts the approach of "4+1" architectural view. In this new architecture, PACS and RIS become one while the user interaction can be automated by customized workflow process. Clinical service applications are implemented as active components. They can be reasonably substituted by applications of local adaptations and can be multiplied for fault tolerance and load balancing. Furthermore, the workflow-enabled digital radiology system would provide powerful query and statistical functions for managing resources and improving productivity. This paper will potentially lead to a new direction of image information management. We illustrate the innovative design with examples taken from an implemented system.

Component integration framework for manufacturing systems re-engineering: agent and object approach

This paper reports on an experiment in which the pre-existing engineering systems for FMS re-engineering were integrated using an open framework of cooperating agents - DESO. To reflect the standards of communication in a distributed heterogeneous system, a multi-level model and an agent template, based on this model are proposed. Agents and software components coordinate their activities using FMS shared ontology, commitment rules, agent communication and control language (currently, restricted version of KQML) and DCOM/ActiveX interaction mechanisms. OpenSim: A flexible distributed neural network simulator with automatic interactive graphics

An object-oriented simulator called OpenSim is presented that achieves a high degree of flexibility by relying on a small set of building blocks. The state variables and algorithms put in this framework can easily be accessed through a command shell. This allows one to distribute a large-scale simulation over several workstations and to generate the interactive graphics automatically. OpenSim opens new possibilities for cooperation among Neural Network researchers. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

An immune inspired co-evolutionary affinity network for prefetching of distributed object

In distributed object computing (DOC) containers, cache strategy as a passive approach improves the performance by caching the recently accessed objects. By the advent of large-scale enterprise applications caching methods fail to keep pace with the increasing importance of performance and the of DOC, increasing scale of DOC system. Prefetching is an effective approach to improve the performance. It generates and stores pages or objects in caches in advance. by predicting the requests. In the current DOC container, prefetching strategy is not supported and seldom studied in the literature. The immune system with faster secondary response and its affinity network inspire applying the immune mechanisms to build holistic model of DOC for performance improvement. In this study, a co-evolutionary affinity network (CEA-Net) is proposed for prefetching distributed objects. In CEA-Net, objects are antibodies and computation tasks are antigens. Invocation relations among object classes are modeled by the immune network of antibody genotypes. Multiple affinity measures among antibody, antigen, genotypes of antibody and antigen, genotype set and antibody population are defined to model the complex relations among distributed objects. Especially in the antibody population, immune principles including clonal proliferation, immune memory, immune toleration and elimination are designed to add evolutionary features to the antibody population. Based on CEA-Net, the prefetching architecture for DOC is built including 5 main procedures, Network Abstractor, Access Recorder, object Factory, Cache Engine and Prefetch Engine. Finally, the experimental study shows the promising access performance and the evolutionary features of CEA-Net. CEA-Net is instructive for the future design of high performance DOC containers, such as WebSphere Application Server and BEA WebLogic Application Server. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A distributed system for the simulation of people flows in an airport terminal

The research described in this paper introduces a novel distributed computing environment designed as a simulation tool for the analysis of large and disaggregated data flows. Our research is based on a mapping between a real-world system, in which the interest of study is the modelling of disaggregated data flows, and a distributed computing environment, both being modelled as a graph. This distributed computing environment is a middleware whose dynamic properties replicate the behaviour of large data flows, i.e. computing objects migrating between the different computing nodes of a local area network. It also supports distribution and processing of objects at the appropriate level of granularity. that is, the nodes of the computing graph. This approach gives a high level of flexibility and scalability to the system. We believe that such a distributed computing environment provides a novel solution for the exploration and understanding of patterns produced by disaggregated-based systems. The potential of our middleware is illustrated by a case study that simulates large people flows for different hall configurations of an airport terminal. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. An electronic broker for business-to-business electronic commerce on the Internet

distributed object standards provide a key to building interoperable applications that can run on a range of platforms. The paper describes a CORBA-based research prototype for an electronic broker in business-to-business electronic commerce. High-level IDL specifications are used to achieve interoperability between components of the electronic marketplace. The two key functionalities of the electronic broker are the ability to dynamically gather information from remote electronic catalogs and the support for negotiations through auction mechanisms. The paper discusses the functionality and the design of the electronic broker and gives an overview of current extensions of the prototype. As application-level interoperability is a crucial precondition for many brokerage services, we put special emphasis on electronic commerce protocol standards.
