In the Web environment, rich, diverse sources of heterogeneous and distributed data are ubiquitous. In fact, even the information characterizing a single entity - like, for example, the information related to a Web service - is normally scattered over various data sources using various languages such as XML, RDF, and OWL. Hence, there is a strong need for Web applications to handle queries over heterogeneous, autonomous, and distributed data sources. However, existing techniques do not provide sufficient support for this task. In this paper we present DeXIN, an extensible framework for providing integrated access over heterogeneous, autonomous, and distributed web data sources, which can be utilized for data integration in modern Web applications and Service Oriented Architecture. DeXIN extends the Xquery language by supporting SPARQL queries inside Xquery, thus facilitating the query of data modeled in XML, RDF, and OWL. DeXIN facilitates data integration in a distributed Web and Service Oriented environment by avoiding the transfer of large amounts of data to a central server for centralized data integration and exonerates the transformation of huge amount of data into a common format for integrated access.

Data federation systems virtualize access to enterprize data resources by integrating data from disparate and heterogeneous operational data sources in an on-demand and real-time basis. The key challenge of low latency data access in such real-time data federation systems can be addressed by grid based scale-out architecture. However, failure of resources in the grid can pose serious challenges in data federation as the query processing is federated over multiple grid nodes. In such real-time data federation systems, it is often desirable to recover from failure and continue operation rather than repeat the entire process. This paper proposes a decentralized failure-recovery protocol for data federation system using data spaces based architecture. The generic nature of the protocol makes it extensible to applications other than data federation system as well. Moreover, the protocol does not make any assumptions about the availability of any central repository for recovering from failure. We implement the proposed failure recovery protocol in a simulation environment and present the key findings of the study.

We present in this paper BP-QL, a novel query language for querying business processes. The BP-QL language is based on an intuitive model of business processes, an abstraction of the emerging BPEL (business process execution language) standard. It allows users to query business processes visually, in a manner very analogous to how such processes are typically specified, and can be employed in a distributed setting, where process components may be provided by distinct providers. We describe here the query language as well as its underlying formal model. We consider the properties of the various language components and explain how they influenced the language design. In particular we distinguish features that can be efficiently supported, and those that incur a prohibitively high cost, or cannot be computed at all. We also present our implementation which complies with real life standards for business process specifications, XML, and Web set-vices, and is used in the BP-QL system. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. distributed query processing and heterogeneous data integration are two research areas that have received much attention over many years. These areas remain very relevant and continuously pose new challenges due to the numerous problems from various disciplines that can be solved by processing and analyzing large amounts of data. in this work we address in particular the problems faced by the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. The nature of these problems suggests the need of mechanisms that enable a wide range of distributed resources to cooperate in order to solve them. Currently, such environments composed of a large number of cooperating distributed resources are called Grids. This paper presents our approach and experiences on building a data integration and query processing system aimed at providing unified access to astronomical datasets through the e-GrOV data Grid, which represents a first step towards a Mexican Virtual Observatory.

Grid query optimizer to improve query processing in grids

The emergence of computational grids, as global computing infrastructures, calls for development of new and advanced database techniques. While there exist algorithms and tools that facilitate database operations in grids, currently query optimization techniques are scant. In this paper, a query optimization technique, Grid query Optimizer (GQO), that improves overall response time for grid-based query processing is presented. GQO features a resource selection strategy and a generic parallelism processing algorithm to balance optimization cost and query execution. GQO is tested using a simulated grid environment and compared with two other optimization techniques. Experiment results show that GQO provides better-than-average performance and is especially suitable for queries with large search spaces. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Content-based retrieval of spatio-temporal patterns from human motion databases is inherently nontrivial since finding effective distance measures for such data is difficult. These data are typically modelled as time series of high dimensional vectors which incur expensive storage and retrieval cost as a result of the high dimensionality. In this paper, we abstract such complex spatio-temporal data as a set of frames which are then represented as high dimensional categorical feature vectors. New distance measures and queries for high dimensional categorical time series are then proposed and efficient query processing techniques for answering these queries are developed. We conducted experiments using our proposed distance measures and queries on human motion capture databases. The results indicate that significant improvement on the efficiency of query processing of categorical time series (more than 10,000 times faster than that of the original motion sequences) can be achieved while guaranteeing the effectiveness of the search.

A taxonomy of distributed query management techniques for wireless sensor networks

In the not too distant future, wireless sensor networks are envisioned to proliferate through the entire spectrum of the 'environmental monitoring' market allowing users to monitor a multitude of environments. Thousands or even millions of sensor nodes may span vast geographical areas enabling various environmental parameters to be monitored with significantly higher spatial and temporal resolutions than what is achievable using existing monitoring technologies. In order to manage the large amount of data that will be generated by these numerous sensor nodes, novel querying methods are needed to extract the required information in an energy-efficient manner. This paper studies the techniques used to manage the queries in a distributed manner and classifies the current state-of-the-art in this field into four main categories: in-network processing, acquisitional query processing, cross-layer optimization and data-centric data/query dissemination. This taxonomy not only illustrates how query management techniques have advanced over the recent past, but also allows researchers to identify the relevant features when designing sensor networks for different applications. distributed query processing (DQP) has been widely used in data intensive applications where data of relevance to users are stored at multiple locations. This paper argues: (i) that DQP can be important in the Grid, as a means of providing high-level, declarative languages for integrating data access and analysis;and (ii) that the Grid provides resource management facilities that are useful to developers of DQP systems. As well as discussing and illustrating how DQP technologies can be deployed within the Grid, the paper describes Polar*, a prototype implementation of a DQP system running over Globus. Polar* can handle complex data by adopting the ODMG object model and its query language OQL, which supports the invocation of user-defined operations. The Globus components are accessed through the MPICH-G interface rather than in a lower level way. A case study from bioinformatics is used throughout the paper, to show the benefits of the approach.

In this paper we introduce a novel system that comprises techniques advancing the query processing in wireless sensor networks. Our system facilitates time triggered queries that are scheduled in a distributed fashion among sensor nodes. Thus, time synchronisation is of paramount importance. Since accurate time synchronisation requires more energy, our system allows a trade off between precision of time and energy according to the user requirements. To minimize the communication overhead for query processing, our system employs new query execution mechanisms. We have implemented our query processing system on Sun (TM) Small Programmable Object Technology (SPOT) sensor network platform. The system was entirely programmed in Java enabling an object oriented design and implement at ion. It provides a friendly graphical user interface for query managernent and visualisation of results.
