networks of sensors are a promising emerging technology for high accuracy real-time data gathering in applications such as pollution monitoring, home security, surveillance, industrial control, etc. One of the possible communication modalities for sensor networks is optical wireless communication. A notable advantage of this method is the facility of passive communication where a base station illuminates an area containing sensor nodes equipped with retroreflecting mirrors. Thus, sensors can communicate with the base station, with minimal energy expenditure on the part of the sensors, by modulating the retroreflected light. Moreover, the location of the sensors can be mapped, with no energy expenditure by the sensors, using only the retroreflected light received at the base station. In this paper we analyze and compare different acquisition algorithms for networks of sensors using passive optical wireless communication. The goal of the acquisition algorithm is to locate sensors in a given area. We present a hexagonal search that is based on the binary search principle in order to locate a single sensor node. We use varying-diameter beams of constant power density to delineate the possible locations of a sensor node and reject areas where there are no sensors. The trade-off between the scan time and the achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (and consequent probability of detection) is investigated. Upon locating a sensor node, the base station can query and interrogate the node regarding its data. We compare the acquisition times for the binary search with a classical grid search that employs a small single size beam-spot.

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) creates the possibility of decentralized systems of sensing and actuation, potentially on a global scale. IoT devices connected to cloud networks can offer sensing and actuation as a service enabling networks of sensors to grow to a global scale. But extremely large sensor networks can violate privacy, especially in the case where IoT devices are mobile and connected directly to the behaviors of people. The thesis of this paper is that by adapting differential privacy (adding statistically appropriate noise to query results) to groups of geographically distributed sensors privacy could be maintained without ever sending all values up to a central curator and without compromising the overall accuracy of the data collected. This paper outlines such a scheme and performs an analysis of differential privacy techniques adapted to edge computing in a simulated sensor network where ground truth is known. The positive and negative outcomes of employing differential privacy in distributed networks of devices are discussed and a brief research agenda is presented.

This paper represents a new multiple sensor information fusion algorithm in distributed sensor networks using an additive divided difference information filter for nonlinear estimation and tracking applications. The newly proposed multi-sensor fusion algorithm is derived by utilizing an efficient new additive divided difference filtering algorithm with embedding statistical error propagation method into an information filtering architecture. The new additive divided difference information filter achieves not only the accurate nonlinear estimation solution, but also the flexibility of multiple information fusion in distributed sensor networks. Performance comparison of the proposed filter with the nonlinear information filters is demonstrated through a target-tracking application.

One of the most limiting factors for distributed sensor networks used for railroad track health monitoring applications is the lack of a long-term, low-maintenance power supply. Most existing systems still require a change of battery, and remoteness of location and low frequency of maintenance can limit their practical deployment. In this paper we describe an investigation of two principal methods for harvesting mechanical power from passing railcars in order to supply electrical power to remote networks of sensors. We first considered an inductive voice coil device directly driven by vertical rail displacement. We then considered a piezoelectric device that is attached to the bottom of the rail and is driven by the longitudinal strain produced by rail bending due to passing railcars. Theoretical models of the behavior of these devices were integrated with an analytical model of rail track deflection to perform numerical simulations of both of these power scavenging techniques. Lab and field tests were also performed to validate the simulation results. Resulting values of average power production show promise for scavenging near the targeted level of 1 mW, and the field data matched well with the simulations.

A high resolution subsurface imaging approach based on near-ground sensor networks operating in the VHF range that utilize ultra-wideband near-field focusing was recently proposed [1]. An accurate scattering model for targets buried in realistic subsurface environment modeled as a vertically stratified medium as well as an efficient inversion technique using an UWB near-field focusing were proposed. Numerical models were used to analyze the signal penetration depth in the VHF range and validate the proposed technique for targets that are buried at various depths [2]. In this paper, in order to investigate the performance of the proposed approach under practical limitations, laboratory-based scale model measurement results are utilized. In addition, various non-uniform sensor arrangements are tested to get an insight into how to best arrange a given number of sensors to cover the largest possible area and obtain the best possible lateral resolution.

This paper addresses the problem of self-localization of distributed microphone arrays from microphone recordings by following a two-step optimization procedure. In the first step, the relative geometry of the sources and arrays is inferred by the proposed maximum likelihood estimator. It is derived under the assumption that the acquired unit-norm vectors pointing towards the unknown source positions follow a von Mises-Fisher distribution in a D-dimensional space. In the second step, the absolute positions and synchronization offsets between the arrays are estimated from the inferred relative geometry by using the Least Squares procedure. To improve the accuracy of the method, we propose as well the use of a reliability measure for the estimated Directions of Arrival based on the presented directional statistics model. The results of numerical experiments confirm the validity of the proposed approach.

This paper introduces diffusion adaptation strategies over distributed networks with nonlinear transmissions, motivated by the necessity for bounded transmit power. Local information is exchanged in real-time with neighboring nodes in order to estimate a common parameter vector via constrained nonlinear transmissions, using an adaptive learning algorithm. We propose nonlinear diffusion strategies for such an adaptive estimation. We will study convergence properties of the proposed algorithm in the mean and the mean-square sense. Simulations support the performance analysis and show that the proposed algorithm performs close to the linear case with the added advantage of power savings.

Key management has long been a challenging problem in wireless distributed sensor networks (DSNs) due to their high security requirements and strict resource constraints. Recently, a randomized key pre-distribution scheme has been introduced to serve as a practical solution and many improvements are subsequently proposed. These schemes mainly focus on key allocations based on pre-deployment estimates of post-deployment information items, such as location data and attack probabilities. Unfortunately, such information items may be unavailable or may change over time. Based on adaptability to post-deployment contexts, we propose a key redistribution scheme that exploits neighboring keys from connected neighbors to reach unconnected nodes. We show that our scheme can be integrated into most existing key predistribution schemes to further improve their performance. We demonstrate our proposed scheme's salient features, such as high connectivity, high resilience, and efficient memory usage, by both analytical and simulation results.

The distributed H-infinity fusion filtering of multi-sensor network systems by False Data Injection (FDI) attack in the presence of sensor saturation is investigated. Firstly, a system model is designed to set up a discrete-time multi-sensor network system, and the distributed H-infinity fusion filtering is designed based on the local filtering parameters by splicing real matrix inequalities using functions, optimizing the filtering design and parameters, and making the filtering exhibit exponential stability in the mean square sense. The experimental simulations validate, the designed distributed H-infinity fusion filtering for wireless sensor networks designed in this paper has lower computational complexity, more obvious optimisation and better system stability than the traditional fusion filtering.
