A sensor network operates on an infrastructure of sensing, computation, and communication, through which it perceives the evolution of events it observes. We propose a fusion-driven distributed dynamic network controller, called MDSTC, for a multi-modal sensor network that incorporates distributed computation for in-situ assessment, prognosis, and optimal reorganization of constrained resources to achieve high quality multi-modal data fusion. For arbitrarily deployed sensors, a certain level of data quality cannot be guaranteed in sparse regions. MDSTC reallocates resources to sparse regions;reallocation of network resources in this manner is motivated by the fact that an increased density of sensor nodes in a region of interest leads to better quality data and enriches the network resilience. An intelligent power monitoring and analysis system for distributed smart plugs sensor networks

With the growth in power demand, energy management is an important issue in the 21st century. This article proposes a smart power management framework system, which comprises three parts. Part 1: a smart plug. Controlling the switching power supply, different sensors can be mounted for different application environments. The power supply can be switched on/off automatically according to environmental changes. Added to this, it can measure voltage and current for analysis. Part 2: a smart gateway. This can act as the mediation module for communication and implement the concept of fog computing. The local inference model is built and deployed by deep learning, and the model is learned, updated, and improved continuously to increase the intelligent control efficiency. Part 3: a management platform and mobile app. This allows for data visualization and a remote control for a user interface medium for scheduling. The smart plug and smart gateway are integrated into the overall distributed sensor network, analyzing and improving the power consumption effectively. Finally, the feasibility and practicability of the overall power management framework system are described experimentally.

Recent advances in wireless communications along with developments in low-power circuit design and micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) have heralded the advent of compact and inexpensive wireless micro-sensor devices. A large network of such sensor nodes capable of communicating with each other provides significant new capabilities for automatically collecting and analyzing data from physical environments. A notable feature of these networks is that more nodes than are strictly necessary may be deployed to cover a given region. This permits the system to provide reliable information, tolerate many types of faults, and prolong the effective service time. Like most wireless systems, achieving low power consumption is a key consideration in the design of these networks. This thesis presents algorithms for managing power at the distributed system level, rather than just at the individual node level. These distributed algorithms allocate work based on user requests to the individual sensor nodes that comprise the network. The primary goal of the algorithms is to provide a robust and scalable approach for tasking nodes that prolongs the effective life of the network. Theoretical analysis and simulation results are presented to characterize the behavior of these algorithms. Results obtained from simulation experiments indicate that the algorithms can achieve a significant increase in the life of the network. In some cases this may be by an order of magnitude. The algorithms are also shown to ensure a good quality of sensor coverage while improving the network life. Finally, they are shown to be robust to faults and scale to large numbers of nodes.

Shape stabilization and flocking control for multi-agent systems with infinitesimal ratio-of-distance rigidity

Driven by the challenge of stabilizing formations in multi-agent systems under constraints of limited sensor measurements, this paper investigates a class of distributed formation control problems where each agent relies solely on its onboard sensing information, without access to global information. To address this, a novel distributed formation control approach is designed based on the theory of infinitesimal ratio-of-distance rigidity. This approach relies solely on ratio-of-distance and direction information, which can be derived from local sensor measurements, and achieves shape stabilization even when position, displacement, and aligned bearing information are unmeasurable. This allows the entire formation system to achieve stability, characterized by local exponential convergence while maintaining freedoms of translation, rotation, and scaling. Additionally, the concept of signed frameworks is introduced, which provides initial conditions that can avoid undesired equilibrium points and realize target shapes. As another significant contribution, this paper proves that triangular formations in 2D space and tetrahedral formations in 3D space can converge to the desired formation with almost global exponential stability. Finally, simulation examples and physical experiments are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed formation controller.

Flexible Compression for Efficient Information Sharing in a Network of Radio Frequency sensors

The efficient extraction of useful information from radio frequency (RF) sensors is one important application for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) approaches. In particular, there is a desire to maximize efficiency when sharing positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) information captured by distributed networks of low size, weight, power, and cost (SWAP-C) RF sensors when operating in congested or contested electromagnetic environments (EMEs). By implementing effective PNT information-sharing strategies, these networks can more easily position the sensors or characterize targets of interest. In this work, we propose a novel ML-inspired compression design framework that improves efficiency when sharing PNT information in a network of sensors receiving radar waveforms. In addition, through novel learning procedures, the network can adapt to unforeseen EMEs such that network efficiency can be maintained in the presence of unforeseen RF waveforms and sensor surroundings. We show that our intelligent, model-driven, ML-inspired data reduction strategies can outperform alternative strategies that do not best-utilize the information content of waveforms in the EME. In addition, we demonstrate the ability of our strategies to adapt to changing mission goals by balancing different types of PNT information and learning from developing EMEs.

Coverage control of multiple robots in cluttered three-dimensional environments

distributed network systems can be utilized to measure environmental conditions such as temperature, sound, pollution levels, humidity, wind, and so on. Multiple autonomously moving mobile sensors are used to construct distributed sensor networks in an unknown cluttered 3-D workspace. The proposed strategy is to deploy mobile sensors (robots) sequentially and individually to extend the network until the network fully covers the entire open space. This strategy results in 3-D sensor networks without sensing holes and does not require global localization of a robot except for a single robot called the Communication Navigation Aid. The authors believe this article is unique in constructing sensor networks in 3-D workspaces cluttered with many obstacles. Moreover, this article presents an innovative recovery algorithm to handle sensor failures in the constructed network. Network connectivity is maintained while robots move in unknown 3-D cluttered environments. Once a robot is deployed at its designated location, it becomes localized in global coordinate systems. Utilizing MATLAB, the effectiveness of the proposed deployment methods is demonstrated.

We investigate tradeoffs arising from the use of coded aperture gamma-ray spectrometry to detect and localize sources of harmful radiation in the presence of noisy background. Using an example application scenario of area monitoring and search, we empirically evaluate weakly supervised spectral, spatial, and hybrid spatio-spectral algorithms for scoring individual observations, and two alternative methods of fusing evidence obtained from multiple observations. Results of our experiments confirm the intuition that directional information provided by spectrometers masked with coded aperture enables gains in source localization accuracy, but at the expense of reduced probability of detection. Losses in detection performance can however be to a substantial extent reclaimed by using our new spatial and spatio-spectral scoring methods which rely on realistic assumptions regarding masking and its impact on measured photon distributions. Gradient-based optimization algorithms for networks of reconfigurable sensors

A variety of optimization algorithms has been developed for non-linear and non-convex problems in which numerous reconfigurable sensors need to be assigned to many tasks. The algorithms are based on modified gradient-search methods and inspired by centralized/distributed principles. Numerical evaluation of these algorithms on a statistically large set of optimization problems has shown that while each particular algorithm does not necessarily provide the optimal solution in all possible cases, some are very efficient in solving them. distributed (agent-based) approaches are usually advocated because of their scalability and speed, but the developed centralized (synchronous) algorithms are shown to be better in terms of speed, and simultaneously in terms of effectiveness, and therefore, in terms of efficiency. A Framework for Cooperative Control Applied to a distributed sensor Network

This paper proposes and evaluates a framework for cooperative control of a multi-agent system. The framework is evaluated on a target-tracking application where a distributed sensor network is tasked to autonomously observe targets within the environment. The problem of cooperative control is defined using two distinct levels of cooperation: implicit and explicit. Implicit cooperation is defined as cooperation through only the exchange of environmental data to compile a common picture over which to reason locally. For example, in this paper, decentralized data fusion algorithms are used to build and update a common picture of the target positions and velocities. Explicit cooperation, which is the main focus of this paper, negotiates the agents explicitly on a joint set of actions to perform. In this paper, the problem of explicit cooperation is formulated as a distributed optimization, and a framework to find the joint set of actions is proposed. The framework utilizes two algorithms, the Max-Sum algorithm, to globally solve a factorizable utility function, and Probability Collectives (PC), to solve the individual factors of the utility function. The paper presents experimental results of the two algorithms using a simulated distributed sensor network when the tracking problem is and is not factorizable. The results show that the proposed framework can efficiently and effectively enable cooperation in a distributed sensor network. The Max-Sum algorithm provides a distributed and flexible approach to solve a factorizable utility function, where the PC algorithm was shown to efficiently solve the individual factors when more than four sensors are required to cooperate.

An ad hoc distributed systems approach for industrial wireless sensor network management

This paper reports on an ad hoc wireless sensor network architecture for industrial sensing and control applications. This approach is tested using a large-scale (400-676 node) agent-based simulation of a factory environment that is subject to noise and blockage. The basic problem tackled by the distributed system is mobile node tracking. To support this work, we introduce two classes of metrics: (1) a set of tracking performance metrics, and (2) a set of network architecture efficiency metrics. The results of our experiments show that the proposed distributed system adapts readily to changes in the sensing environment, but this higher level of adaptability is at the cost of overall efficiency.
